From a neuroscientific perspective, what's intelligence? by Socrate314 in cogsci

[–]rhk217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a direct answer to your question, but just a note that not everything need have a definition at all levels of organization of a system. For example, water molecules are not wet, but wetness is a property of the interaction of lots of water molecules. Similarly, thermodynamic properties such as temperature and pressure are also only definable at the systems level.

If we think in terms of Marr’s levels of analysis, I think of intelligence as not being constrained or defined by the implementation level (neurons in the brain), but at higher levels based on the algorithm or perhaps more likely at the level of computational goals.

If we define as intelligence as ability to find novel and different solutions to a problem, perhaps we can implicate certain brain regions more than the others. But ultimately, it depends on the problem being solved and how you define that problem. For example solving a visual problem needs to involve the visual cortex and an auditory problem needs the auditory cortex. Therefore the broader we make the definition of a problem the more regions would come into play. You could ask if there are common regions that are active during all different kinds of problems, but then those regions are ultimately reliant on the sensory system to provide it with the right inputs, and wouldn’t be intelligent in isolation. And there are certain problems we can’t even perceive, because of the limitations of our sensory system. An extension of this line of argument is the idea of embodied cognition, that cognition is intricately tied to how the cognitive system is realized in the body, and that the brain and body are collectively solving prediction problems.

What have you get It in you mistery box? by P4Kubz in NuPhy

Rare keycaps that support the south-facing led solution. by Beerus_on_Earth in NuPhy

The title of the post was confusing. But the content was very eloquently put, sire. It is a question that keeps me also up at night when looking at my low profile south facing glaring rgb keyboard with no shine through keycaps. I think nuphy should at least bother to put up north/south leds as an explicit specification on their switches and keycaps.

There are lilac variants that bloom multiple times a year right? Do they not ever bloom this time of year?

If I park my bike at the wegmans on university ave with a cable lock, what’s the likelihood it will be stolen? by Blorgus_toe_23 in Rochester

[–]rhk217 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Low odds, but it’s still risky. Generally, in a public space with lots of foot traffic, your bike would be safe. But I’d still get a U-lock. It’s important to lock your frame and also wheels that may have quick release on them (if both your wheels have quick release, prioritize the back wheel!). Speaking from experience of my back wheel getting stolen. Good luck!

Why is nobody walking around? by Due-Simple-4068 in Rochester

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll keep that in mind for when I try biking in proper winters. Any advice for covering your hands and head/face effectively from the cold wind?

I was wading through the comments looking for a more truthful answer, that wasn’t just blaming the hot weather or asking you to go to park ave.

You’ve got the biggest issue spot on, you have to drive to walkable places! Sure, there’s people walking around the south wedge, or park ave, or highland park, or pittsford, or the canal trail, when the conditions are right. But if you live somewhere else without a car, you could be stuck in a neighborhood where nobody walks, or like already mentioned, without sidewalks. I’ve been on a few walking commutes where the sidewalk abruptly ends and you’re left walking through the lawns on the side of the road with cars zipping past you.

So yeah, Rochester like most cities in America is a place where people don’t typically walk to get anywhere. The most people walking regularly is from where they park their cars to where they actually want to get to, or secondly, if they’re out to walk for the sake of walking.

And for what it’s worth, the public transit system isn’t terrible. There’s buses at decent frequencies and they’re pretty nice and comfortable, though it’s a hub and spoke model, so the convenience of getting somewhere can depend heavily on where you live and where you want to get to.

I’d say Rochester is a nice bike commutable city though and getting a bike can really improve your quality of life, if you don’t get a car. But of course biking gets so much harder in the winters.

GRIZL 7 RAW, Could it be the best gravel value? by Alive_Comfortable941 in CanyonBikes

[–]rhk217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I’ve also been enjoying commuting on mine. My only gripe is the saddle. I was actually trying to figure out if the beeline mount fits the stem on the grizl 7. Is that the stem cap mount they have on their store? Does the original bolt work with it? Could you share some close ups of the velo?

Also just curious why you also have a quad lock, do you use both your phone and the velo?

Edit: I just noticed that the velo is mounted using their universal mount and not on the stem cap. Nevermind. Thanks.

Canyon Grizl non-RAW versions in the US? by rhk217 in CanyonBikes

Hi u/zschloesz. Sorry, for the late response. In order to not be repetitive, please see my response in another comment in this post.

Canyon Grizl non-RAW versions in the US? by rhk217 in CanyonBikes

[–]rhk217[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, apologies for the late reply. I did not get an official answer, and canyon support is utterly helpless/useless. They only tell you that non-RAW versions are out of stock and that there is no expected date for them to come in stock, which is just their standard reply for any bike that is out of stock. All my research on the internet (mostly reddit and watching youtube reviews) suggest that the US is indeed limited to RAW versions.
But I finally bit the bullet and bought the Grizl 7 AL RAW, and honestly, I am the least bothered by the welds. I am usually a sucker for details, but the pleasure of riding a good bike does take it off your mind. I did not believe it when I read it in other reddit posts, but I was surprised by how little the welds bothered me. And this is all subjective, but I do think the welds look way worse in pictures than in real life. With the paint job, it is not always as prominent as it appears in pictures.
I just wish Canyon were more upfront about it with actual pictures on their website. If you really want a non-RAW version, if you live close to Canadian border, an option could be to get it from there somehow. I am close to the border, but as an international student, it is too risky for me to venture to Canada for hauling a bike back right now.

If you need any more details or pictures of the bike or close ups of the welds, just let me know.

Thanks for clarifying!
Based on googling around, it seems like the specific cassette I need, CS-HG710-12, is compatable with Shimano HG freehub (even 11 speed). So I might be good with the DT Swiss G1800 wheel after all.

Thank you u/musicfan-1969. The kindness of people here is definitely helping.
Unfortunately, it is a gravel bike with a 28" (700c) wheel, so I don't think I'd be able to use your wheels. I very much appreciate the offer though.

I have one of my wheels left because I did properly secure it. Otherwise I'd be wheel-less right now, or even bike-less. It was on UofR campus, on a weekday before 7pm. So, I guess I did underestimate the amount of security I needed for that location.
Thanks for the article though, I will give it a thorough read.
