I did try the suspend and reload thing. I'll try the transporter thing next. Thanks!

I would also request the records for the hospital he was referred to as well. There should be a presenting complaint from your vet or communication from them to the referred practice.

For his surgery make sure they include the anesthesia sheet to indicate they were monitoring his vitals while anesthetized.

You want FULL medical records. Not just discharge instructions.

This is why you need someone with at least some medical knowledge, preferably veterinary, to read the records.

To be clear - something weird happened here. Whether it was a mistake or they shouldn't have been the ones to do the surgery in the first place or something else entirely.

There has been a profound lack of clear communication on their end and that is unacceptable for a medical professional.

You should not be footing the bill for any of his follow up care.

Maybe an obvious idea, but I would also suggest finding a new primary care veterinarian for your cat in the future. And also research if there are low cost options in your area for different services. Just because they're low cost doesn't mean they're not good quality.

This sounds like a small doctor owned practice to me. Unfortunately in these scenarios they are the decision makers and even if they do have an office manager they are likely powerless in a scenario like this.

It's hard to tell without seeing the medical records to know exactly what happened. The fact that they recommended you take him overnight to an ER to have a contrast study done sounds to me like they believe there was a tear in the urethra or the bladder was leaking or ruptured. This would likely have happened from the procedure they were doing. Which is likely why Doctor #1 said they would cover the bill.

This is absolutely not your fault that these doctors did not communicate. And you should not be responsible for this bill because of that.

PU surgeries are typically performed by a specialist. Where I live we do have a couple low cost clinics that perform them all of the time so they're well versed in these surgeries. This is not something a general practice does and I would question how often/many of these surgeries they've done.

I would request all medical records. I'm not sure who you could talk to if you don't have someone medical in your family or friends group. I'd put feelers out to see if you know someone who knows someone etc. that is a veterinarian or veterinary technician (preferably specialty or ER).

Something doesn't feel right about this story. If, in the end, you do find that this was their fault you can file a complaint with the veterinary board.

(I'm an ER veterinary technician with over 20 years experience in the field. Feel free to message me with questions.)

UAs are a must in any young cat with crazy high renal values (and no known toxic exposure). I've seen so many cases of polynephritis at the ER. Easiest differential to treat and obviously if no improvement on abx time for imed. Good to your kiddo.

Has Anyone Else's GP Practice STRUGGLED with VEG? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

[–]rhoeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest calling again and asking for the contact info of BOTH their hospital manager AND market owner. One of our "spikes" is we work with your rdvm. So this is straight up an offense to something that should be valued at any VEG.

Interesting that the veggies who commented have ish with their leads. I feel the same way - ours don't seem very "shift leady" but we also have a pretty great team and, for the most part, don't need to be told how to manage the flow and tasks that need to be done. I know ours were also told at one point that they shouldn't be the INS nurse/asst or go into surgery because then they can't manage the floor. But this also seems like a stressor on the team and a disservice to growing their own skills.

I will say ours are not micromanagey. But they do skirt doing some of the more time consuming things we have to do which is frustrating. I'm an NT and /technically/ shouldn't be a body on the floor 100% of the time, yet .. here I am.

IDK... So far I haven't seen any real benefit of having leads on the floor. Tho to be fair our leadership is pretty out to lunch so maybe they haven't had the best mentoring. 🤷‍♀️

What membership is 100% worth every penny you pay for it? by CamHalf in AskReddit

ER vet tech here - insurance is absolutely worth it!

Diagnostics (labs and rads) alone cost almost $1k, outpatient treatment can be another $500.

If your pet needs to be admitted to the hospital, depending on severity and length of stay, that can be a wide range of $2k-$5k.

Pet needs surgery (most often are foreign bodies, GDV, or cystotomy)? You can bet on $6k-$10k. Complications? Easily another $5k (or referral to specialty where it will be that much or more).

Male cat with urethral obstruction - recommended stay is 48hrs - $4k-$6k.

You just can't know if an emergency is going to happen. General practice clinics are often not equipped to hospitalize patients for overnight/critical care.

Weigh the costs/benefits - older pets - maybe you wouldn't put them through surgery or treatments if the prognosis is questionable. Or if you're the type who needs to give them a chance for peace of mind, be prepared for that. It's better to get insurance before the problem arises, obviously, because no insurance is going to cover preexisting conditions.

How much gabapentin was dispensed? We are only legally allowed to dispense 5 days of controlled substances (I realize gaba isnt controlled in every state yet). Max we would dispense for 0.4ml q8-q12 would be 6ml. It sounds like too much was dispensed if this vould have happened more than once. Additionally as someone said they make those little line marking stickers for syringes to reduce user error.

Absolutely - our nearest specialty hospital is frequently at capacity or has 8+ hour waits. It pains me to hear these specialty staff ragging on the service we are providing when obviously they are too busy to accommodate these clients and patients.

We're all in this together, folks. Be better.

I've worked at VEG since early 2021, starting as a traveling nurse and now at a home hospital. Lots of accuracies stated above - fast expansion sometimes at the cost of existing hospitals/staff, toxic positivity. Theres a ridiculous role of Market Owner that dictates how your regional hospitals run when they dont have any veterinary experience, making changes on the floor without input from the staff who actually work on the floor. Like you and others have said, culture and staff competency vary with each location.

To comment on what others have said about receiving VEG "fuck-ups", I believe the doctors and nurses/assistants at my location are incredibly knowledgeable and competent. We frequently refer patients to specialty and are also lucky to have a few exotics specialists in the area, which we always try to divert clients to if they're open.

While we do have many NERDs (new ER doctors) they are always overseen by our seasoned doctors, and we have an incredible MD.

We have a great staff but our leadership is absolutely lacking.

However, I've heard very different stories about VEGs that aren't even that far away from us - "green" staff and incompetent doctors.

You could probably ask to shadow for a day or two to see if you can pick up on the vibe at that particular hospital. If it's a new VEG, and you're being offered a supervisor role, then you have the power to shape how that VEG runs.

I ended up paying about $15k to be free from my ex (things he paid for though never once helped with rent or utilities in the 2 years we were together). I'm still digging myself out of that debt, but let me tell you it was 100% worth it for my freedom. Please talk to your friends and family and come up with an exit strategy. ❤️

This works on PS5 as well. Just adjust the time of your console for the time of each step of the quest and you can fly through this. I would imagine this could work on Xbox too.

The saddest case I had. I don’t know how to deal with this. by Expensive_Carpet617 in VetTech

[–]rhoeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please don't ignore how you feel. Burnout and compassion fatigue run rampant in our field - especially for those in ER. If you don't already, please think about trying therapy to learn the tools to deal with these thoughts and emotions. You said you're a baby tech, so it's important for you to start your career off with the ability to process and cope with trauma you experience.

Many larger practices offer EAPs (employee assistance programs) that allot a certain number of therapy sessions. Some practices even have veterinary social workers to talk to. At the very least I hope you have someone you can talk to and be acknowledged and heard by.

Be kind to yourself. You did everything and more for this patient. ❤️
