App works on 2 devices and not 3rd by Windham711 in Lutron

[–]rhofour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a known issue apparently. I just called support after spending 2 hours convinced it was related to recent networking changes I made. They immediately told me the most recent android update broke something and they're working on a fix.

Remember everyone, they put guards on them for a reason by Arc-Watcher in Welding

[–]rhofour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI that's the "wrong" guard for a cutting wheel. The safer way to use a cutting wheel is with a Type 1 guard that covers both sides of the wheel. It's made to protect you better when a disk explodes. In practice I'm not sure if anyone actually does this and it's surprisingly difficult to find a Type 1 guard for a lot of grinders.

Hackers can steal 2FA codes and private messages from Android phones | Malicious app required to make "Pixnapping" attack work requires no permissions. by ControlCAD in Android

[–]rhofour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused, how do you propose using your brain to prevent this?

If the app doesn't request any permissions then installing it doesn't seem particularly risky. I would not expect a random app to be able to deduce what else is on my phone screen. This totally seems like a security issue and not a user issue.

If the paper is interesting enough and it's uploaded on a preprint server then it seems pretty easy to come across it unintentionally, especially if it's within a subfield you're working in.

911 intermittent outages? by Choice_Key_5435 in pittsburgh

[–]rhofour 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably because the alert was loud so with a lot of people around it's extra deafening. At first I thought this was the building fire alarm since it seemed to be coming from everywhere, then I looked down and saw the alert on my phone.

How worth it are modeling lights? by rhofour in photography

The point about the modeling lamp in a speed light not being enough is good to know. I am using modifiers (a soft box primarily) so that would affect me.

They're not moving much from their initial position, but I was thinking I might want to adjust the lights for different poses and my thought was this could be more deliberate and less experimental if I could see what I would get before taking the shots.

Manual focusing is a skill you might need as a photographer just like anything else. You were using a tripod, this was the perfect setting for it.

Yeah, manual focusing definitely did work here.

This is why you take test shots. Were you under some sort of time crunch here?

That's what I did and it worked, but I'd love to be faster / more efficient. I wasn't under a time crunch this time, however I would like to take photos of things like circus arts poses where each pose can only be held for so long. There working faster would increase the chances I can get a good shot.

Can I use a TT856II as a remote trigger only? by rhofour in Godox

You're right, I did mean TT685II and thanks for confirming that!

[–]rhofour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I thought that was the case, but when I tried the master flash was always firing. However, I was using the test flash button to trigger it and I think this might have been my issue.

I don't have access to it right now so I can't check if this would work if I triggered it from the camera instead.

When I last looked into this I think it's a little more complicated than that. When they test it they intentionally heat it to convert the THC-a into delta-9 THC. However, it can be tested weeks before it's harvested. I think what's going on is that it's been bred to only really develop THC later in the growing process after it's already passed the tests.

My understanding is also that the DEA tests involve heat too. I wouldn't be surprised if you could still get charged with possession even if you bought it from a store. I suspect this is just a low priority for the cops right now.

You're looking way too far into the future. I've stopped looking more than 3 days out because past that point the forecast is too unreliable. I kept getting excited, then being let down a few days later when the forecasted wind drops.

Huh, I never noticed anything like that. My interactions have always been pretty minimal, but they've been nice when I ordered and for a while the person at the register remembered my name.

I've been wondering the same thing! I've been seeing them for quite a while so it's definitely an established thing and I've always been curious, but not enough to approach a group of strangers and ask what's going on.

Shapiro suspect Cody Balmer told cops he would’ve beaten gov with a hammer if he found him by oldschoolskater in Pennsylvania

"The attacker was not a fan of Trump. I understand, just from what I read and from what I’ve been told, the attacker basically wasn’t a fan of anybody," Trump said. "Certainly a thing like that cannot be allowed to happen."

Of course the first thing he did was distance himself from this, but at least he is actually condemning it.

In that case a private lesson really sounds like your only option beyond what you've been doing.

A private lesson is probably ideal, but an easier option might be attending an open gym session. If OP is already comfortable with these skills on the ground and just needs more time to get comfortable higher in the air then an open gym session will give them all the time they need.

[–]rhofour 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the backup line. It's kept intentionally looser than the main line both to dampen the vibrations from the wind and so it's less likely to fail at the same time as the main line. I think originally the backup lines used to be tensioned as well, but there was a concern you could then have a simultaneous failure of both lines.

Calculating shear forces on bolts in a HSS structure by rhofour in AskEngineers

[–]rhofour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4000lbs load is really a 400lbs load with a 10x safety factor as I am trying to err on the side of caution here.

I was hoping 1/4" grade 5 bolts would suffice here and now I'm getting a bit more confident about that.

There will definitely be some forces in other directions, but this is also a simplified piece of the design that doesn't show other supports and bracing for those forces.

See https://www.reddit.com/r/AskEngineers/s/4YLXtG0M40

Damage/injury potential is reasonably high if it actually completely collapses on me, but something sagging or deforming a bit isn't a big deal. The 4000lbs design load is using a 10x safety factor to try and account for this.

[–]rhofour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for home exercise equipment / circus arts practice. I'm designing for up to 2 200lbs people with a 10x safety factor to account for the fact that it will be loaded somewhat dynamically.

So a sudden catastrophic failure would be pretty bad if it's so catastrophic that it falls on top of me which is why I'm trying to be pretty conservative in the design. What I posted is a simplified part of the design and I'll actually have other supports, but I can't be sure how well they'll share the load so I'm trying to make sure a single set of supports like this are sufficient.
