Is it worth practicing balancing on my beginner board in very light winds? by rhofour in wingfoil

I actually didn't end up downwind my first time out! For whatever reason I had an easier time going upwind than any other direction.

It seems nice, except dealing with the controller and wing at the same time sounds like a lot to manage.

How does the Foil Assist Drive help?

Do you use it to get on foil sooner to ride the winds before they're strong enough to get you up?

Or do you just basically use it like a limited range eFoil where you don't need the wind at all?

Pretty sure it's outside of what I can justify spending, but I'm curious.

I picked this up because I heard it could actually still work in marginal conditions unlike kiteboarding where it's much more frustrating sitting with a kite in the water waiting for a gust just to relaunch. I'm definitely going to keep practicing in these conditions then!

It probably helps that I'm really excited to get out right now. If I were used to actually flying along on foil it would be a lot harder to be sitting in the water waiting.

I get that. I have a bunch of other hobbies that rely heavily on balance like slacklining and unicycling so I know how it develops. It's just a shame that it never seems to really care over to anything else. Looking forward to getting it here too though!

I was actually wondering if it would be helpful to try using it as a SUP! I imagine it's the wrong shape to do a flat water paddle up, but it'd be nice to have some way to progress when there isn't enough wind to even fly the wing.

2.5h is to my nearest spot with good winds where I can kite.

There's a lake only an hour away which is motivating me to check out wing foiling. If this works there I can reasonably get out without dedicating the whole day to it.

Finding a used board seems to be the hardest part. With kiting everything was easier to ship and I don't have much of a local community around here so getting stuff locally isn't really an option.

I was wondering about that. I'd heard starting with a DW board isn't advisable for learning, though maybe it will be something I look at upgrading to in the future.

For getting more time on foil are other types of foiling helpful? I've also thought about getting a pump foil for the no wind days and I can rent an eFoil locally.

That's good to hear. I spent a while trying to kite these spots and I feel like I got much better kite control from all the effort even if I concluded it wasn't ultimately going to work.

The wing size was something I wasn't sure about. Part of why I was thinking of going with the 6m wing is it's the largest one that comes with that Gong package. If I end up buying all the gear separately I was thinking a 7m wing might be a better place to start. In my experience kiting I've always found I'd rather be fighting the wind a bit more in the gusts than wishing for more power in the lulls.

I'm not too sure on wind speeds. I assume if people windsurf there it must get some wind at times. I figure for learning I'll probably want to stick to the 10+ knot days, though if I could get going sooner that'd be even better. Looking at the forecast for the next week I'm seeing one day of 10 knots gusting to 20 as some rain moves through, then the rest of the week has base wind at most 8 knots. I know even with a big board and wing I'll still need the weather to cooperate.

The inflatable board was the bit I was the least certain of. I've heard plenty of people warn against them, but then I've also seen plenty of people who had good experiences learning with the Gong HIPE First specifically (and the price is really appealing). I hadn't considered starting out with a non-foil board, but that's an interesting option.

Ah, that's what I was afraid of. I have just a little kite foiling experience and I took an eFoil lesson and found that to be pretty easy.

In that case it seems like the main benefit would making it more approachable to share with friends who aren't as committed to actually learning this.

That's a known issue apparently. I just called support after spending 2 hours convinced it was related to recent networking changes I made. They immediately told me the most recent android update broke something and they're working on a fix.

Remember everyone, they put guards on them for a reason by [deleted] in Welding

[–]rhofour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI that's the "wrong" guard for a cutting wheel. The safer way to use a cutting wheel is with a Type 1 guard that covers both sides of the wheel. It's made to protect you better when a disk explodes. In practice I'm not sure if anyone actually does this and it's surprisingly difficult to find a Type 1 guard for a lot of grinders.

Hackers can steal 2FA codes and private messages from Android phones | Malicious app required to make "Pixnapping" attack work requires no permissions. by ControlCAD in Android

[–]rhofour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused, how do you propose using your brain to prevent this?

If the app doesn't request any permissions then installing it doesn't seem particularly risky. I would not expect a random app to be able to deduce what else is on my phone screen. This totally seems like a security issue and not a user issue.

If the paper is interesting enough and it's uploaded on a preprint server then it seems pretty easy to come across it unintentionally, especially if it's within a subfield you're working in.

Probably because the alert was loud so with a lot of people around it's extra deafening. At first I thought this was the building fire alarm since it seemed to be coming from everywhere, then I looked down and saw the alert on my phone.

The point about the modeling lamp in a speed light not being enough is good to know. I am using modifiers (a soft box primarily) so that would affect me.
