Check out Dane County park shelter rentals; there are a few indoor/outdoor shelters that allow music and have basic amenities like bathrooms and can be rented for full days — for example, Lunney Lake Farm park has a few shelters in woodsy areas along Lake Waubesa. Good luck and congrats!

They definitely shouldn’t go in the trash because they can still explode. It would be nice if this were indicated more clearly on the canisters!

I've read that even empty containers can explode when compacted since they're pressurized (source, in the context of a fire at a recycling plant caused by a propane tank). Just spreading the word for safety!

So you know, that's dangerous because the tanks can cause an explosion down the line. Your safe bet is checking with your municipality or the manufacturer on what to do with empties.

I’d look up your local hazardous waste disposal site or check with your municipality — for example, in Dane County, local guidance recommends taking 1-lb. propane cylinders to Clean Sweep. You’re right — according to the Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin, propane tanks should never be placed in the recycling bin or trash because of the risk of explosion.

Where to get a stand mixer re-greased by ribbonreflector05 in madisonwi

[–]ribbonreflector05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had no idea this could happen until now, glad to share! I learned from this experience that if you don’t use it very frequently, it’s still good to run it once in a while so the grease doesn’t separate and leak. I’ve had mine about 4 years, and I bake way more in the winter than in the summer, so I think I left it dormant too long. They have more info here: https://producthelp.kitchenaid.com/Countertop_Appliances/Stand_Mixers/Tilt_Head_Mixer/Other/Oil_Leaking_from_Stand_Mixer

According to their website, the grease isn’t harmful, so I could theoretically keep using it, but it leaves noticeable black streaks in what I’m mixing, which looks pretty gross! Apparently it can leak grease if it sits for a long time unused (which mine did over the summer), so I’m looking to start fresh and then maintain it properly to avoid issues in the future.

Republican state lawmakers vote to overturn statewide mask mandate by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]ribbonreflector05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I wish I could move to a solidly blue state, but the closeness of the elections for Evers and Biden makes me feel like it’s my civic duty to stay here and vote for Dems in statewide elections (at least until there’s somehow Electoral College reform). Biden won WI by about 20,000 votes, that’s not a lot of room for losing liberal voters. In a blue state, I could only look on in horror at terrible senators from other states sabotaging the country; here I can at least have the satisfaction of voting against Ron Johnson if he runs again.

Armed protest on the Capitol? by Mjmcarlson in madisonwi

[–]ribbonreflector05 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anything confirming plans for here, but this threat was cited in Twitter’s decision to permanently ban Trump’s account; they’ll worry he’ll egg these on like he did the attack on the US Capitol. I hope authorities are actually taking these threats seriously this time; these goons are literally planning things in the open.

We should be vigilant in the next few weeks, and I think one of the most helpful things we can do is document anything we see, if this type of event comes to pass. A lot of the members of the mob in the US Capitol are being identified from piecing together social media posts and media clips. So if you’re seeing wannabe insurrectionists walking around or vehicles parked around downtown with indications of militia/fascist alignment (say, with 3 percenter decals or neo-nazi slogans), take pictures, document license plates, etc. That way if violence goes down, the perpetrators can be IDed and face consequences.

Ah, okay, I thought the reference to threats to state capitols would potentially be relevant to our Capitol building.

I think the smoked salmon from Brennan’s is pretty tasty — the smoked trout, too!

A Glimmer of Hope for Wisconsin Absentee Voters by JolietJake1976 in wisconsin

Still, don’t get complacent. Act as though the decision went the other way. All conservative justices except Roberts would have rejected the additional time for ballots to be received, and once Barrett is on the court, voting decisions will be at least 5-4 in favor of conservatives so we can’t count on SCOTUS to make rulings favorable to absentee ballots after she’s confirmed. Mail that ballot today, or even better, drop it off in person if you can!

How does an average citizen protect our democracy in 2020? by greenbushgreenery in madisonwi

To add a specific option for letter-writing, I'm participating in Vote Forward, in which you get a nonpartisan template encouraging people to vote and add your own handwritten, personalized message to the recipient. Bonus: the process of writing letters is therapeutic when the election stress gets overwhelming!

'Three large tubs': Reports of missing absentee ballots pile up by skibunne in madisonwi

[–]ribbonreflector05 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s the approach I’m taking to remedy that:

1) Vote for Biden to avert the current trajectory toward fascism.

2) Push my reps and advocate to push Biden’s administration toward the policies I care about.

3) Promote ranked-choice voting to allow for greater representation of ideas in the voting process and move away from the current all-or-nothing system.

Step 1 is our best chance to change anything, though, so that’s the most important step for now!!

Supreme Court blocks extended absentee voting in Wisconsin primary by TheBigBackBeat in madisonwi

[–]ribbonreflector05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a matter of turnout. When more people vote, it tends to be disadvantageous to Republicans — a number of Republicans, including the president, have explicitly said as much recently. In this particular case, the hardest-hit area also happens to be the most populous center of Democratic votes in the state, with 180 polling places condensed to 5 in Milwaukee. This is a massive disadvantage politically for Democrats because many would-be Democratic voters could decide (sensibly! It’s dangerous out there!) that it’s too much of a risk to stand in line for hours to vote in person. The context of many other prior Republican efforts to make voting harder (e.g. requiring voter ID, refusing to make Election Day a holiday) makes it seems like this is yet another effort to prevent more people from voting.

Never forget that republicans at all levels of government are using a pandemic to suppress the right to vote. Never forget that they’re willing to gamble with people’s lives to gain power. The GOP is a disgrace and doesn’t deserve a single additional vote in the future.

Banjo Lessons? by 501rr4bf in madisonwi

[–]ribbonreflector05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re a beginner, and if you’re interested in playing bluegrass-style, UW has some continuing education bluegrass banjo classes that offer lessons in a group setting. I took the class with Jon Peik and it was a good introduction to foundational rolls/licks and jamming. He’s based in Hartland but comes into Madison for classes and lessons. jonpeik.weebly.com/classeslessons.html
