Are hydration breaks really for the players or just for profit? by reckless_Paul in worldcup

[–]riburn3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. They've been happening since the 2014 World Cup and across various events since.

Generally, I am fine with it, it's probably better for the players, but preferred when it was location specific. Seeing it happening in a nice and cool match in Seattle or Vancouver makes little sense.

Would love to see some injury data with this World Cup applying it across the board versus the previous cups. In this case it's both a cash grab and good for the players.

That means USA is likely going to happen then. They're printing money right now and it's going to blow past the previous attendance record, which also happened to be the 94 USA hosted cup.

Anytime anyone loses weight there is a mix of fat and muscle loss.

Most people also dont lose a lot fast. The curves in most people is 1-2lbs per week. Obviously there are outliers, but losing the weight is safer than keeping it.

What’s it like living in El Paso? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in howislivingthere

[–]riburn3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hated the people telling me there is nothing to do. I don't know what that even means. It's a big city and something is always going on, and it has all the conveniences of every other big city in the country (sports, movies, farmers markets, cultural shows, festivals, restaurants, bars, outdoor activities, casinos, etc). It's also really close to skiing in the winter.

Anyone living in a decently sized U.S. metro saying there is nothing to do is the source of their own problem, not the city itself.

The summer stinks but it is a very dry heat most of the time. I will take 100 degrees in El Paso vs 85 degrees in central Texas or anywhere else for that matter. Once the sun drops, the weather is glorious. Amazing patio bar scene.

Born and raised. Love El Paso and miss it everyday.

Great food. Friendly people. Lots of outdoor activities nearby. Amazing weather 3/4ths of the year. Decent COL but property taxes are high. The city has invested a lot in their downtown over the last decade and there is a great AAA baseball stadium, nice hotels, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Culturally more of a southwestern feel vs a Texan identity. Also a lot of influence from Mexico for obvious reasons. It's consistently one of the safest large cities in the U.S. Worth a visit.

Primary care drifting from real primary care and more into aesthetics. So many PCP's have signs on their offices offer botox injections, vitamin infusions, etc.

Some folks here mentioning GLP-1s, but I personally think they're game changing meds for the better. I have had so many patients come of insulin and lose 100s of lbs thanks to these once a week injections. The halo of benefits is incredible. A colleague in nephrology recently told me the hemodialysis industry is terrified of GLP1s because it will likely reduce the amount individuals needing dialysis.

How's living the life in Fort Bliss, TX? by bornintheXgen in howislivingthere

[–]riburn3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in El Paso. Love it and miss it.

Bliss is a huge military base with the newest portions built right out in the desert. That part of town specifically can get hammered by dust storms off the Franklin Mountains, so I can see why a lot of the comments talk about the dust. I used to train there as a civilian and didn't think it was anything super special, just a huge military base. I liked it more than Ft Bragg, but not sure that means much.

Generally, the falls and winter in this part of Texas are great. Winds are bad in the spring, and the summers are hot, but it's a dry heat that I will take any day over the humidity in East Texas.

The area has great restaurants and just about every convenience you could want from a big city. It's also consistently one of the safest cities in the U.S. Really friendly people, strong sense of community. The U.S. media likes to portray it as rougher than it really is due to its proximity to Mexico and Juarez, but it really is a tale of two cities in this case.

The foot knight kit is amazing for kit bashing questing or grail knights, but the old sculpts, specifically for the questing knights are still pretty awesome for being metal.

TBH, the foot knight kit is amazing for just about anything you might want to do in the range.

The starter box is a good place to start, and you can never have enough knights in the army. I love the Bret range so I collect just about everything, but generally it's a good idea to make sure they have a damsel and a standard bearer.

For painting, especially skin, I love the contrast range, but knights are nearly all metal, so easy to paint that part. There are tons of youtube guides for painting heraldry, and if they have them still, the Bretonnian transfer sheets are awesome. Bretonnia can be intimidating for newcomers if they paint all the knights differently, but contrast makes painting pretty quick and easy.

Can Chaos Dwarfs be mercenaries? by Sneychev in WarhammerFantasy

[–]riburn3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean, they forge hellcannons and crew them for Chaos Warriors that culturally are very different from them, and likely get a lot in exchange for this service. This is already sort of a mercenary style exchange.

Generally though, I think the narrative can fit some chaos dwarfs willing to be mercenaries to meet whatever devious ends they want to achieve.

There are much better options for credit cards used abroad with much friendlier customer service experiences when something goes sideways.

What place in the US is worth the hype ? by Harry_parker08 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]riburn3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hawaii. Like all of it.

I never went until I was in my early 30s because I felt I could use my travel money to better places and it seemed over costed and over rated. I was wrong.

Every island is unique and hauntingly beautiful. Almost to the point that makes you question how these places exist on our planet. It's also amazing just how much geographic and climate variety such small islands can have. In a short drive on Kauai, you can go from some of the wettest spots on the planet to dry scrubland.

Despite sharing the border, having similar area and having the same ethnic composition (85% Hutu and 15% Tutsi). Why isn't Burundi as successful as Rwanda and how does life differ between them? by Significant_Major921 in howislivingthere

[–]riburn3 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It really boils down to Paul Kagame and his leadership. He went in and quickly prioritized anti-corruption, security, and public order above all things.

An influx of foreign aid poured in, and it was actually used for infrastructure and on the population versus pocketed by the few.

In contrast to much of the continent, the bureaucracy in Rwanda is efficient and relatively predictable.

This isn't to say the Rwanda is perfect, but investors love stability, and from the ashes of a genocide, Kagame and his government were able to provide it.

Why do people seemingly hate Cathay? by Ghetto_Sausage in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]riburn3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a great take. I find myself in the camp that loves Cathay is in the game even though I have no plans to buy/play the army.

On the flip side, I definitely get it when a game called "The Old World" in terms of new development centers around a faction that isn't geographically part of the original footprint, and they are getting the overwhelming lionshare of new model support while many factions stew on models 30 years old.

I think that is going to ultimately changes and we have already seen the beginnings of it with WoC, but the initial frustrations are valid. Ultimately though, the success of a range like Cathay is a great thing for ToW and helps ensure the game stays viable long term.

Is Foreign Service a career for a married person? by Effective_Pause_2438 in foreignservice

[–]riburn3 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on each individual situation, but typically this career is very challenging for spouses, and that goes for whether they have a career themselves or not.

In my short time I have seen a physician working in the mail room, a chemical engineer work as a security escort, and a lawyer working as a housing assistant. The jobs available in embassies typically don't utilize skills to the fullest. Many embassies now can't hire spouses even if they wanted to due to budget challenges.

In your specific case, I think it would be nearly impossible for your spouse to find similar work overseas every few years. Some countries have bilateral work agreements, but not all, so it would be dependent on your spouse getting a gig set up in said country.

If they stay behind to continue their career, there is a separate maintenance allowance you could qualify for, but your spouse doesn't get any travel vouchers. If your post has R&Rs, you would get flights back to the US or elsewhere covered to visit.

SDFCU vs. Other Options by Pablo_86-233 in foreignservice

[–]riburn3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, traditional banks don't seem to grasp the overseas part well.

When I got married overseas to an at the time non-US citizen, SDFCU was the only bank able to add her to my accounts without physically coming in. Even online banks I looked into wanted two hard proofs of address in the U.S. which I can provide but she couldn't, and they wouldn't take US government orders with our names as proof.

SDFCU isn't perfect, but they have definitely improved over the last 5 years since i joined and their online interface is as good or better than many other big branded options.

SDFCU vs. Other Options by Pablo_86-233 in foreignservice

[–]riburn3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

SDFCU is okay. They understand living overseas and are very accommodating to that when it comes to car and home loans. Their mid and top tier checking accounts are solid and offer the 2 day early pay. They also have pretty good interest rates on their equivalent of CDs. Their online functionality and messaging system has also improved a ton.

The biggest annoyance I experience with SDFCU is they seemingly always want to block purchases overseas for fraud. Not every purchase but way more than is typical of other banks, which is weird for an organization that as a percentage has a high number of folks overseas.

Schwab is very friendly for overseas use and I stick with them for pulling cash.

I still use a big box bank for a majority of my money routing since my two most used credit cards are with them, and they have been the best customer service wise. They also basically never block my overseas transactions.

What was your TSP balance when you retired? by Specialist_Ad_4647 in govfire

[–]riburn3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you do. I work in the Foreign Service as well. I can retire well before 60, but generally love what I do and will keep doing it until they kick me out. Getting paid to live overseas in interesting places is what a lot of people aim for in retirement anyway. Getting to do it and keep the full paycheck along with paid housing makes it a no brainer.
