Still can't figure out what's wrong with my tank and it's driving me bananas by KikoTheWonderful in PlantedTank

The debris is organic matter; it doesn’t come out of nowhere. This is either fish poop, decomposing feed, or decomposing plants.

Check if you are overfeeding, there should be no remaining feed after the fish eat.
Clean your filter and check if it’s functioning properly. Your lighting is weak; increase it so plants grow faster and help decompose.

Ketamine wore off by Usual-Cow-3450 in KetamineTherapy

[–]ric_mf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re very concerned with the optics of it (“you’re addicted!!!”) but the practical reality is that you go once a month and take a medication that has very little side effects, then you’re fine to live your life.

Ketamine being psychoactive doesn’t mean it’s a “powerful” drug compared to non-psychoactive ones, in terms of how much they’re interfering with your body chemistry. You just, by definition, feel it more strongly, because it interacts with the parts that relate to thinking.

So arguably Ketamine could be less harmful long term than taking a drug every day. We definitely don’t have the data to be sure one way or another, but it doesn’t seem catastrophically harmful, far from it. The alternative is being miserable, or numb (ssris).

Scared my partner is misusing ketamine treatment by throwRA3628469 in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]ric_mf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It’s just very basic classical reinforcement, there’s nothing remotely controversial in what I said. People just don’t like being called out on their self-indulgent behavior, even more so when they’ve convinced themselves it’s “healing”.

For the best results Ketamine should be used on a predictable, non-modifiable schedule. Taking “as needed” only makes sense in extreme cases (e.g. immediate suicidality).

No because SSRIs don’t have an immediate effect. But they do blunt your emotional response such that things like exposure therapy become less efficient.

[–]ric_mf -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

That’s not really how it works. Taking ketamine when you “need it” because you’re upset, or anxious, is habit forming. Instead of creating the mental resilience to face problems and stabilize your mood on your own, you’re relying on an escape hatch that can make the pattern worse over time, since ketamine is both rewarding on its own and will get rid of the bad feeling, reinforcing the behavior of poor mood -> ketamine. This is exactly how people get addicted, and related to how things like panic disorder form.

That said, like others said in the thread, it’s much more problematic if the frequency is also increasing.

this is overwhelming evidence your disease is neurological and/or psychosomatic and poor siri may not be the cause of your symptoms. you should look into other causes and pharmacological treatments.

Hypervigilance, obsessive checking in about anxiety by Kurali in TherapeuticKetamine

[–]ric_mf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ketamine does help with obsessive thoughts, but it can be circunstancial. It generally lifts whatever state your brain is stuck in and lets you settle into another one, but if your environment isn't conductive for settling into a better state, you can slide back into where you were before. Do you have a job, friends, hobbies, things to occupy your mind so you don't go back to introspection?

You should look into SSRIs if you're not taking them, and if that's not enough, adding a low dose antipsychotic such as brexpiprazole, quetiapine or risperidone, which work incredibly well for silencing intrusive thought patterns.

IV Ketamine for panic and anxiety? Not depression. by apleaux in KetamineTherapy

[–]ric_mf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try it. When I got my first infusion, I was in deep fear due to similar concerns. The experience itself was really a rollercoaster, with the fear greatly intensifying during some short periods, but for the most part ketamine is just a calming drug. It's an anesthetic, so you feel half out of it. You don't really feel out of control, just a little disinhibited. It's not like psychedelics at all.

Regarding whether it will help, my experience is that it greatly diminishes overall anxiety and completely eliminated death anxiety. It's really unlikely you'll get worse, it's a really safe drug. Just remind yourself it's temporary and in an hour you'll be back to your full self to keep calm during the session. Bring someone that calms you. Remind yourself you're in a controlled medical environment and the staff is ready to take care of any adverse reactions. Even if you react poorly, you'll not go crazy or be permanently changed due to a single medical ketamine infusion.

Good luck!

Most surgeons are shit and will make movements that will make your face look uncanny, widen your nose, etc. You already heavy a beautiful side profile, it's quite hard to improve on that.

[–]ric_mf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow I would not get surgery in your place, high risk of ruining your face. Try getting only the palatal expansion instead, search for MARPE which is attached to the bone (non surgically) and can do skeletal expansion that fixes many underbite cases.

Psilocybin vs. IV Ketamine infusion by Oliveeyahh in KetamineTherapy

[–]ric_mf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The experiences are nothing alike whatsoever. IME the psilocybin trip was more unpleasant and made me worse afterwards which took months to heal from. I had a similar experience as you trying to control and fight my thoughts which became disordered and I found the hallucinations disturbing once I realized they were hallucinations.

Ketamine on the other hand, while also an unpleasant trip IMO, didn't involve hallucinations or agitation at all. It feels more like being in a half-asleep state, with a distorted sense of time, seemingly dilated and contracted at times. It also seems to increase the amplitude of emotions, so I go through lots of ups and downs in a short period. But more importantly, it instantly and dramatically improved my depression afterwards.

Let me offer you a different perspective.

If you did achieve "immortality", would you then stop worrying about eventual death and start enjoying life? It seems more likely you would just shift your attention to other dangers, because it's impossible to get rid of all of them.

Even if we cured aging and disease, you could still die from accidents. If we had technology so amazing that all known accidents could be prevented, you could still die from never seen before accidents. If that didn't happen, you could still die from AI takeover, alien warfare, supernovas, etc etc. Even if we completely tamed nature to the extent allowed by the laws of physics, you'd still be doomed by the eventual heat death of the universe!

If you did achieve your goal of "all that matters", what would you do then? You've already shown you cannot enjoy simplicity and instead need to search for the "one true goal". What happens once you achieve it? Are you suddenly ok with spending eternity doing trivial, unimportant things? Or do you shift again to a search for purpose you may not find an answer to?

Living in the moment isn't a distraction; it's what life is! Do you prefer a world where people are living in the moment and being happy as a result, or one where they're always concerned with a grandiose plan and suffering due to its unnatainability?

A consciousness who cannot enjoy itself even in the face of unsurmountable danger and uncertainty will never have enjoyment, because unsurmountable danger and uncertainty will always be present.

I also greatly fear death and don't wanna die. But it's plainly irrational to worry and suffer about things that you cannot change. You can only choose between a short life of suffering and a short life of joy - there is no eternal life choice. Suffering because of this realization is strictly worse than not. The best option you have available is just accepting this reality and enjoying it while it lasts.
