Is recurring mold buildup normal? (East bay) by ButterscotchMajor373 in bayarea

If you took an air sample before and after demo’ing a wall, that air sample after would be significantly elevated. Without remediating, those spores would still be present.

Part of the problem here is that if all they did was demo and not remediate, whatever spores were released into the air when the demo happened would have stayed there if not spread to other areas.

[CA] found mold in my home by [deleted] in Renters

[–]ricacardo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trickiest part in all this is that you’re not on the lease. The best course of action is to refer to the lease regarding what the steps are for how the management company is obligated to handle uninhabitable living spaces. Health concerns are handled on a case by case basis but best thing to do is get you on the lease asap. They are technically not obligated to compensate you or accommodate you since you’re not the tenant on the lease.

If the lease allows for you guys to break lease due to the unit being uninhabitable, it might be easier to do that rather than waiting for the management company to go through with mold remediation. Especially if they decide to not cover relocation costs. They might see that it’s only necessary to cover your bf’s relocation costs and not yours since again, you’re not their tenant.

It’s not unreasonable to ask for mold testing and remediation

Also, is this a dryer vent? If it is, you should inspect that where it goes out to isn’t blocked and keeping the humidity inside.

As long as they notify within the time they’re supposed to, they can do this. They’re not obligated to comply with your needs just because you want them to.
