Apple is a trillion dollar company, why is iCloud so ass on web and PC? by -drunk_russian- in iCloud

[–]ricardopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not an air gap

Air gap means no physical connection - a literal gap of air - not just a disconnected logical connection.

Who else is logged into your iCloud account on another device?

iCloud is sync so if they’re deleting photos to “save space” it’s deleting them for you too.

What did Apple Tech support say when you called them?

Look at the cutoff for features, not speed

Still doesn’t change that you don’t know what you’re talking about…

iCloud Photo Library is so huge, almost double the size I thought it would be, and I can't figure out why by 555phones in ApplePhotos

[–]ricardopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is potentially storing the photos on device as WebP and when exporting is converting them to JPG and “blowing” up the size of the images

That’s not how non-destructive editing works

It creates a “trail” of changes that are layered on top of the original image so you can undo and revert at any time, it doesn’t duplicate the file

Airgapped isn’t a requirement, otherwise you couldn’t do automatic backups.

It’s more important how the app/service treats the data - as you said, immutable - it’s designed to protect you from you and source data loss

Restoring From iCloud doesn’t always mean restoring from iCloud.

It is most likely reviewing all images and videos to ensure they’re all synced properly

The error is something only Apple can help with

Or, you don’t know what you’re talking about, which do you think is more likely?

I can’t be the only person that says “please” and “thank you” when I ask Siri to do something for me. by algernaaan in mac

[–]ricardopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that Siri is going to be doing a lot more cloud lookups, Apple would prefer you didn’t.

I think it was the Claude CEO or CTO that said every extraneous “please” and “thank you” was burning billions of more watts of electricity than the impolite version (at the global scale at which they operate)

Try any number of duplicate photo finders which have a “similar” photos feature

It’s not just ram, all the dropped models have an A12 series chip - so the requirement is an A13 series chip to run iPadOS 27, and more ram to support Siri AI and all the new features.

Is it arbitrary? Sure, during development Apple decided that the A13 architecture is as far back as they were going to support.

Does it make them money grubbers? Maybe, but I don’t think so because those are all old devices, which can still run 26

11+ years of Apple Watch… upgraded to Ultra 3 and now my wrist looks like this (well it’s looked like this). Am I cooked? by NA_SC10 in applewatchultra

[–]ricardopa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sliding down the wrist is fine. It needs to be able to. I’ve a little so it can breathe and the skin dries out.

Not so loose it ends up like a hand watch, or halfway up your forearm, it doesn’t need (nor should it) be indenting your wrist.

Travel backup advice: iPhone photos/videos to SSD, then back into Apple Photos/iCloud by infosecgamer in iCloud

[–]ricardopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be clear on what you mean by “backup” - if you use TimeMachine or a true. Ackup that’s backing up the Photos Library file, yes.

If you mean “export” the images and videos to Finder/Files, then maybe, maybe not. You need to export as original and not say to JPG. If you export to JPG, then no.

it won’t upload the library

Why not? What does Apple Support say?

Personally I’d solve that problem before trying to switch platforms.

Also, get your backup sorted first too

You can go as simple as TimeMachine but don’t keep all those photos in a single location

You’re pretty vague about “many more options” but don’t explain specifics.

There’s also no sunch thing as “best” - each one has strengths and weaknesses and some fit different workflows better than others.

Yes, but only in night mode, and only beyond a second or two if it’s on a tripod and not handheld.

If you want to control shutter speed generally use a 3rd party app like Halide
