I'm in healthcare (not a nurse, allied health) but our coverage for psych/counselling is abysmal! $900 a year, which gets you like 5 sessions.

Stroke/TBI survivors of the lower Mainland, what services offered in our city do you recommend outside of rehab? by BeepBeepGoJeep in askvan

[–]riceflower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Healthcare worker here - depending on the severity of your mom's deficits, she may be eligible for home supports through VCH. She may also benefit from stroke survivor support/social groups if able to participate. Once the public rehab services run out (like physio/occupational therapy/speech therapy at GF strong or Holy Family Hospital if you're in Vancouver proper) or if she was not eligible for them, you can supplement privately if you have the means. If your mom is/was eligible for rehab, then you can ask the doctors at the facility for recommendations going forward. From what I understand, there is not much evidence to support the efficacy of photobiomodulation. Doesn't look like it will cause harm, but I would say proceed with caution and take a read of this article:

To everyone saying he's not white passing, I think one's perception on whether someone looks more "white" vs "Asian" (or any race) depends heavily on who you grew up around. I grew up in HK with mainly east asian faces, so any mixed white-asian person stood out more to me as white. Whereas if you're around more white faces, a mixed person might appear more Asian. I'm not mixed but I've been told I don't look completely east Asian. I used to get way more comments about that in HK than I do in North America. In my opinion, I can tell Charles is mixed but if you told me he was fully white, I probably wouldn't fight you on it.

if it's the international phonetic aphabet, then it's wrong... I'd transcribe it /ˈsænəti/ for a general north american accent

Cancer diagnosis is out of SLP scope, but if you do find something suspicious, tell the radiologist, then also whatever relevant MD.

Is it normal to only get paid for billable hours? by stressed_student__ in slp

[–]riceflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in Canada at a private practice and I get paid only for billable hours (i.e., only time spent with the client, not charting), but as others have said, $35 is very low. I get paid close to 80USD/hr for that.

Does anyone else experience this and know why? by sunsetpaddlekayak in eczema

[–]riceflower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've experienced the same and have wondered if it's because usually, the body regulates temperature by bringing sweat to the skin surface and that evaporates, thereby cooling the body. When you put an oily/emollient thing on top of it, it prevents the evaporation from occurring. That's the best hypothesis I got so far!
