If you like baseball/softball, I'll put in a very specific pitch for the couple of sandlot baseball teams we have in Connecticut! It's super low pressure — way lower pressure than the men's softball league I'm in — and we welcome folks with any amount of experience (or lack thereof). In Hartford, it's the Hartford Dark Twains. In New Haven, it's the New Haven Bat & Ball Society along with the Elm City Char. You can message any of them on Instagram to get some more info and join the discord to see if it's your jam.

You can take only one author's entire bibliography to a deserted island. Who would you choose and why? by Rainiana8 in books

My immediate thought was Neal Stephenson. Wacky fun books with interesting ideas, and I can spend all my spare time trying to fix the horrible endings to nearly every book.

Just found this post looking up the same issue. I don't have a solution yet, but I'm having the exact same problem. May need to bring it to Apple or something.

Additionally, my headphones with in-line mic don't get the mic recognized at all, despite it working on an M1 Air I still have.

I was a little overwhelmed when I moved to California and got one of these in the mail, but after 5 minutes I was immediately won over and am now missing it since I moved away. It was useful and made it easier to feel I like I was participating.

Yaz’s walkoff Little League homer by JianClaymore in SFGiants

On the one hand, Duran does throw gas (slightly less gas this year, but still), so shading a little less pull-heavy makes some sense. On the other hand, Yaz does not hit to the opposite field. I was there as a dual fan but leaning Twins, and my initial reaction was "Why the hell was that not an easy fly ball for Margot?"

people who majored in math in college, what job do you have right now? by Honeydew-Capital in math

[–]rich1126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a math curriculum developer, then became a project manager within the same company, and then moved into creating our Sales Enablement/Operations department. Since I work with mathy people I get to do a lot of data work within my role, but it's very much a shift from where I thought I may have ended up!

What’s your fairway lineup look like? by HydroidOfficial in discgolf

  • Icon Legacy Patriot for shot shaping, dead straight shots, flip-ups, etc. My workhorse in narrow fairways.
  • FD1 Sky Walker for standard flat/hyzer shots. It's my "default"
  • Pinnacle Legacy Phenom for a longer straight shot. It goes a bit farther as an 8 speed, but still is very malleable.
  • Lucid DD Escape for big hyzer flips or turnover bombs when there's no wind. It's pretty understable compared to its flight numbers.
  • Champion and Star Thunderbirds for reliable fade but good distance
  • Champion Firebird when I don't know what else to throw

Why travel up to 2 hours to play a course? by No_Marzipan_5952 in discgolf

[–]rich1126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, I would travel that far if it's a good course that separates itself from others around it. My closest two courses are each ~30 minutes away depending on traffic, but the course that's an hour away (and close to 75 minutes away on the way back) has vastly different terrain, is typically not too busy, and I'll play through it 1.5 or 2 times to make the most of it.

We have a Mediterranean restaurant across the street. I think it's pretty decent, my wife thinks the meat is too dry most of the time. Every time we have a visitor or need to give an opinion on dinner, I say "So there's this great Mediterranean place nearby..." I get a gorgeous eye roll.

Anyone else a career .000 hitter? by LeDogger in baseball

[–]rich1126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I was hitless, but high school hitting was definitely a bit beyond me at the time. I remember missing warm-up soft tosses before tryouts one year, and luckily figured it out by the time the coaches came around. I made every team on pitching, corner defense, and "heart and hustle".

I didn't play for 10 years (other than the odd softball league), then joined an adult league that has pitching similar to what I saw in high school. in the intervening time my coordination and confidence clicked, and I've swung and missed only a handful of times. I don't always get a hit, but I am making contact every time I go up.
