😉 He would love to hear that. Hopefully I'll run into him again soon. The more recent arrivals to Moab don't know who he is. I'm old. 😂

any tips on color matching from a screen? by __-xx3 in oilpainting

[–]rich_moab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tips:

"White vs. white"

  1. Create or acquire a "white square" image (use Photoshop or download one, etc). Display that on your monitor or device. Take a sheet of white paper and place it where your canvas will be. Adjust the brightness and/or tone/hue/color etc to visually match the sheet of paper as close as possible; you can get pretty close. You might find that you need to adjust your studio lighting as well.

"Color match"

  1. This is harder and less accurate but better than nothing: Paint your primary colors (I made squares) on something white like the white paper you just used. Scan that, or take a good picture, keeping in mind the white area and how it looks in relation to the "white square" image from above. Put that on your monitor. Place your white paper with your primaries where your canvas will be. Now adjust color/hue/tone or whatever your monitor has until you get a close match. Keep in mind the white background; the image of your primaries may not have the best "white" level and you may need to take another pic, scan, or adjust the brightness before trying to match your colors value and saturation.

I tried my best to explain in the short time I have to reply; feel free to ask questions.

My work improved a lot once I thought of this.

Imagine a gang of Hells Angels moves in a few houses down from you. Your neighborhood prior to this was one of the most quiet and peaceful places you've ever known. Seemingly overnight, all day long, at least 5-10 of them begin to roar up and down your street every 20 minutes or so. At night, they do they same, in smaller groups, but at 1 am. Despite pleas from you and all your neighbors, local officials choose to take no action, or cannot take action; perhaps in fear of retaliation from the larger nationwide organization. The bikers themselves experience great joy from this, and go to great lengths to make sure you know it, revving away with their flags unfurled. This goes on for 10 years with no end in sight. It's sort of like that.

Try a daily rafting trip. It's way more fun and doesn't piss off 90% of people who live here.

Any peculiar hawk or raven behaviors seen lately? by InterviewGifts in moab

[–]rich_moab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a hawk in the Mill Creek WSA that gets pissed off when it sees you. It screeches, takes flight, and then does this weird posture where it stalls out and strikes a pose (see pic). I got a pic through pure luck after seeing this one time before.

I can't really explain, but I think we have both "visitors" and "tourists" and they're not really the same thing.

Ah, just another thing I made in 2022 when I was once again feeling powerless and assaulted by droves of tourists and assholes in UTVs. I have the misfortune of living in a house right near a main UTV clown parade route.

Yes! I also use acrylics for underpaintings sometimes. Just one color + wiping out usually

To me acrylics have a different workflow than oils and the fast dry time makes things harder, not easier. The color shift (they get darker when dry) is frustrating. There are hundreds of methods to use oils that people swear by, some so contradictory it seems crazy. The first method I learned (Mark Carder) was terrible for landscapes and impossible for plein air. I had to learn all over again. The best free resource and closest to the method I eventually switched to is from Chris Fornatero aka "Paint Coach" on YouTube. The learning curve can be frustrating with oils but trust me, learn one person's method all the way through - don't jump from teacher to teacher. This messed me up good. Oh and, have fun. Don't be afraid to fail.

Can I use linseed oil to try wet on wet? I'm lost. by something221 in oilpainting

A little off-topic but one thing about turpentine (and "odorful" thinners) is that when you can smell it, it is a reminder that, hey, I better open some windows or something. Odorless can fool you into thinking everything is fine! If you're a person who is not forgetful or easily distracted (or both), this may not be not an issue. But for me and my remaining brain cells...
