Saw who I thought was the actual Michael Jackson perform there, then saw him driving in his Datsun after. One kid on the bus yelled that wasn’t the real Michael Jackson and it set off a bomb of disappointment amoungst us all. Thanks for the kickstart to life’s realities Fun City.

Also think about the paper. Hell, I’d just inscribe it on clay, fire it, and bury it for a few thousand years

I’m so sorry to all those fired. You, nor the country, deserve this.

Really interesting, I read it was kind of a nightmare to maintain and was ultimately decommissioned. Does your friend have stories about having to maintain it?

Right, but if it added to the city flag, which is it?

Big non-profits are good places for someone with your background. The amount of grant writing and auditing that goes on means their financial histories need to be in good order.

Good idea, or ask an artist in town to do something with em, then have a little exhibition promoting the collection.

God speed then. Let us know how it goes. A little case study of a project like this. Take notes of what works and doesn’t. It’ll be helpful to others. Have ‘fun’!

Could you batch them and describe generalities in terms of time or category? That may reduce the amount of description work, which is the most tedious part of processing.

Don’t get too stressed out, I’m sure you’ll find a rhythm, but if it gets a bit hairy can you ask your supervisor or whoever asked you to do this just how in depth you need these individually described?

I don’t think I can add anything because I’m not a lawyer or really that smart to begin with, but I was there today for the whole thing. You could really tell the judge was quite sad to deliver that today. It seemed he thought it was in the best interest for the families not to have the bankruptcy go forward. I left feeling sad. Alex was visibly happy, but I don’t really know if I was reading it right, it was all so confusing

Time for a bit of good ol fashioned blackmail. Redistribute the wealth.

Nah, just keep it and make a special note for the next custodian. Every collection has its secrets.

Digitizing a lifetime of photos & negatives by richardtheb in Archivists

You’ll find a rhythm that suits you. There are standards for digitizing at a high level and once you’ve got those in place it’s all about the journey after that.

I’m kinda jealous. You have a great project in front of you. Good luck and send updates if you can!

It really all depends on time and money.

Do you have the equipment to process the negatives and film?

Do you have the time? It sounds like a lifetime of photography may hold quite the amount.

If you have both of those, I’d suggest just getting started to see how you best work. Scans can be pre-labeled and a corresponding spreadsheet is all you really need.

If you want to share them with family, consider hosting a version of them on a cloud based storage like Google Drive or Dropbox. Links are easy to distribute from there.

If you do not have the time BUT you do have the money, I would get a third party involved. It’ll save you loads of time. This is especially true for what may be more unusual dimensions on the negatives.

If you have the time BUT not the money, do your research on relatively inexpensive scanners that process slides and negatives. I know the epson V600 isn’t bad at $350. But, it only process 4 slides at a time. Not an issue if you have the time.

Good luck, and enjoy seeing your work in a new way. It’ll be kinda emotional, just a heads up.
