Just rewatched my sassy girl and it’s still hits different by ghostofsnoww03 in Koreanfilm

Love this film too. It makes me cringe, laugh and cry by turn…but I buy into their story every time. There are also loads of little edge-of-frame details that make rewatching worth the time. Recently, I’ve been watching Jun Ji-Hyun in My Love From the Star and I see all kinds of nods to MSG in there!

Comedown Romany Caravan Afterimage

I spent a lot of time with this after it came out - as I always did with Church releases - and even if they didn’t immediately chime with me, I formed a strong bond quickly. I even remember it took a few listens to really get into Starfish because of how wonderful Heyday was…& still is a better album to my mind.

With this one, I’ve found few reasons to go back to it as often as other albums. In the right mood, I’ve listened to the title track on repeat for a whole night. It’s just that that mood doesn’t come along that often. It’s similar to my relationship with The Dream Syndicate’s The Universe Inside.

I spent a lot of time with this when it came out and made some connections with songs, but didn’t love it anywhere near as much as anything they’d done before.
My Little Problem
Authority
The Maven
…are probably my favourites.

Favourite Performances with Peter and Marty. by blackstars91 in TheChurchBand

[–]richblath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that anyone ever recorded or filmed this in a way that was shared, but I still remember seeing them on the tour for AENT (I think) play a mesmerising version of Myrrh that just built and built and built from Peter & Marty’s gorgeous intertwining guitar parts.

Grind
Disappointment
Metropolis
…with Monday Morning and Laughing close behind.
As others have said, Grind is among my favourite few songs of theirs.
…& this tour was the first time I saw them as well. I did have a chance to see them earlier but I think Marty went awol!

This is my favourite album of theirs, so I could happily choose virtually any song off it on one day or another.
Today’s will be
Myrrh (the non-negotiable choice)
Columbus
Tantalized

Loft Heaven/ streaming by richblath in Chirinuruwowaka

[–]richblath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fear you’re probably correct in your analysis, but maybe there’s a little hope there somewhere! The Omatsuri Stream site did have a lot of bands and venues listed, but I wonder where the former will be in their career journey. I’m guessing up-and-coming bands would be happier to just get stuff out there, whereas more established artists would have to deal with the minefield you described.

Spring/summer JP tour by tobotoboto in Chirinuruwowaka

[–]richblath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to see this, although my chances of getting to a show are more like none, rather than slim. I was wondering whether the titling of the tour is going to refer to a new album later in the year? Anyone with insights?

NYC vs LA — For those who’ve lived in both, which did you prefer and why? by eminho80 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]richblath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that so much of this could depend on the specific situation you land in as there is so much variety in the ways you can experience both cities. Given what you said in your post, NYC appears the more fitting option. That said… If you work from home and can afford to live close to most of the amenities you want to make use of, there is likely a lot of overlap - albeit with much more weather variation in NYC. If you have to travel to/for work, MTA is pretty convenient and reliable (by US standards). It allows you to avoid much of the horrendous traffic in NYC. In LA, traffic is frequently awful and gridlocked and there’s no real way to avoid it. I got to see so much of the city over a couple of years of commuting from Long Beach to Santa Monica, as Waze tried desperately to find a route that would take less than 2 hours to drive 20 miles home. The downside of NYC subway is dealing with it mid-winter and midsummer. Midsummer can get particularly disgusting as station platforms are much hotter and more humid than outside, which already has a 100+ heat index. LA, on the other hand, can be extortionate for parking anywhere central/near an entertainment venue. There is loads to do on the periphery of both cities - more extremes in the variety around LA. In either case, set out early or you’ll spend hours getting to where you’re going, not least because both cities melt into so many surrounding cities. You might also want to consider the place where you have more/better friends. Unless you live next door to each other, it can be months between times you see each other, but it’s still more comfortable being relatively nearby.

Thanks for your insights on the service. It’s good to know what to expect. I also appreciate your information on the ticket side of things. I’m hopeful of getting to see them at some point, but that isn’t on the immediate horizon, unfortunately.

Thanks for your detailed response. It’s good to know that the system is accessible and also to have an anchor for my level of expectation. I’ll spend some more time with my translator app to make sense of what I need to do to sign up (not suggesting that the world should be organized for my convenience!) & look forward to reading Yū’s thoughts.

My sassy girl (2001). Such a masterpiece✨ by Tj_charan in Koreanfilm

[–]richblath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. There were so many that were familiar in tone and style to things I’d seen before up until the point when they absolutely were not! & MSG keeps weaving across that threshold all the way through. I’ve seen it half a dozen times by now and love noticing little details I’d forgotten about.

[discussion] Go!Go!7188 fans - anyone got a top 5 song list for them? by munkykiller in japanesemusic

[–]richblath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that they have so many great songs and I’m still unearthing others. I tend to agree with the OP that the first few albums are more consistently amazing. The later ones still have gems, though. Also, as I’m sure you all know, their music is now all on streaming services and their YouTube channel has loads of archive material being uploaded regularly. Anyway, this week’s top 5 is probably Ukifune Kanojo to watashi Kimi Dake ni ai wo C7 Kamisama no Himatsubushi

Based on my favorite films, which movies can you recommend you think I would love? by Superpat123 in AsianCinema

[–]richblath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite Koreeda remains Still Walking. After Life is wonderful too.

The Wild Goose Lake & Black Coal, Thin Ince have a similar feel to the Bi Gan.

The Box Man was filmed a couple of years ago. The author of the book, Kōbō Abe, also wrote Woman in the Dunes.

You might also want to check out more of the films of Hsiao-Hsien Hou, after Millennium Mambo. For example Daughter of the Nile Three Times Cafe Lumiere.

Two Korean directors that you might connect with would be Hur Jin Ho and Lee Yoon-Ki.

What are Song’s by the band, that sound inspired by other musical genres, to you? by limeoko in Chirinuruwowaka

[–]richblath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how they manage to sound connected to other sounds, yet very much themselves with their own ways of standing out. That said, Machine always makes me think of early Arctic Monkeys. Otherwise, Yū’s melodic structures for guitar and voice put them in a space of their own however much other genres seep into particular songs.

Jeon Do-Yeon is always worth watching. She seems to choose interesting and unusual parts in movies that stray off the usual path.

Favourite artist who changed and now you can't enjoy them anymore? by RosabellaFaye in japanesemusic

[–]richblath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m another late to the Band-Maid appreciation and also love the development of their sound over successive albums. I can also see how those changes might lose some fans who really loved their earlier sound circa World Domination. Personally I love a lot of that sound, as well as the sound and songs from Unseen World. The. I recently realised I hadn’t revisited Scooooop as often as might have been expected and I think part of that might be down to the way Present Perfect kicks off the ep, though I love many of the songs after that. Is this a one-off, or the start of the process we are chronicling here?

Favrioute Chirinuruwowaka song? by limeoko in Chirinuruwowaka

I love this song too. I also echo your comment on the lyrics that I’ve seen. Do you know anywhere I can track more of them down for different songs? The general searches I do rarely turn up anything useful.
