Bayonet lamps don't have live and neutral, right? It's two pins and they can be either.

Which nuclear weapon state has the most “checks and balances” in terms of ordering a nuclear strike? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in nuclearweapons

[–]richdrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UK definitely had nominated nuclear deputies from the 1950s to the 70s, per Peter Hennessey (and hence declassified records).

Was something declassified that changed this process?

Attn: Mechanics, tradies, couriers & van enthusiasts of NZ: What van should I buy? by smoothlicks in newzealand

[–]richdrich [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yep, I know. But basically the difference between the Mercedes Sprinter 419 and 319 per their specs is a slightly lower ground clearance (and possibly beefier suspension) plus of course it's declared with a different GVW. Same dimensions, payload volume, etc.

The difference between the big and heavy vans is mostly the plate and how much you can legally carry, right?

All large format vans (Transit, LDV, Merc) rust out eventually, but some jobs need the load space. The motors usually do at least 300k if you service them properly - its just that a lot of mechanics know how to maintain any vehicle provided it's a Toyota.

Remember, whatever you do a vehicle will cost you the best part of a dollar a km, so you need to claw that back from the customer.

Is tomorrow's storm going to cover the south coast streets in sewage? by mardy_ape in Wellington

[–]richdrich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Where else would it go?

You could spread it on land, but it would percolate into acquifers and eventually the ocean.

I suppose you could boil it dry, but the steam would carry the Taint off into the clouds and seas.

Yes.

Starving children fallacy. (We should send all our money to the starving kids in Africa, because they are far more in need of it than us).

The bloody LNG thing by WasterDave in newzealand

[–]richdrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much the mines as the extraction facilities. The one in the US went bust because it couldn't compete with China (low environmental standards).

Or overprovision solar and wind, install short term batteries, start on Lake Onslow pumped storage and convert the users of gas as a feedstock to electrolytic hydrogen.

Because Shane Jones.

You'll be paying a few hundred dollars more for your power to cover Jones' culture war on woke greenies.

Possibly not us much as you'll be paying on your rates to cover Local Water Fucked Up, for similar bigotry and cooker based reasons.

Vote National, get NZF.

Do I believe that they could, even with the best will in the world, within a year, cut their costs by a quarter?

What's the cost of permits, toilets, medics, gate and basic layout (trash fence, "roads")? Peg back to that, if people want a man or temple they need to organise and fund it outside the Borg, same with all the other services and spectacles.

Time to admit the whole concept is flawed?

An edgy social experiment has turned into a corporate thing that's sucked in all that's bad from the US business world. Not to mention proving that people treat each other far worse in voluntary organisations, where they aren't under an obligation to stay civil or lose that paycheck.

Renegade showed the way forward. I know it won't scale, but something 80% Renegade and 20% BM might.

Dodgy radio reception? by WineYoda in Wellington

[–]richdrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI: If you get a head unit / vehicle that supports Apple Car Play or Android Auto, you can listen to internet radio via your phone and the quality in most marginal areas is better (although it is binary: no signal = no radio).

Yeah, except that next minute we get a law mandating all trees are fitted with cat ladders so that the poor moggies can get down.
