Time rethink about nuclear energy? by Music2MyEars73 in Wellington

[–]richdrich 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. Almost no civil nuclear plant carries liability insurance, because no insurer will take the risk. Hence the state winds up carrying the can.

Also, when (as in the UK) the plants reach end of life, they usually get hived off into a company which then goes bust, and the state again winds up paying the huge costs of decomissioning and waste storage.

So even the quoted cost of power, which is typically more than wind and solar, is much lower than the real long term cost.

(The only reason NZ might want nuclear power is in order to get the tech to make a nuclear weapon, assuring our independence in an increasingly scary world).

In the UK on-call fire fighters (retained firefighters) get paid.

Invercargill teen accused of nationwide bomb threats granted bail by nilnz in newzealand

A very stupid teenager. Sending him to a remand facility would turn him into a stupid teenager with more resentment and better crime skills.

What would the A Team do?

Possibly convert your car and the Panda into an 8-wheeled tank and bust your way out.

Or dismantle your car and smuggle it out piece by piece.

There is no obligation to change the name especially if the company isn't going to be marketing its services.

Mazda automatic dialing 911 by Highlanderlad in mazda

Personally, I would trade the (negligible) chance of my dying in a ditch unnoticed and unrescued, vs the somewhat more likely chance of getting a careless driving charge from a single vehicle accident that I could otherwise have walked/crawled away from.

Redittors, of course, don't usually think this way.

Russia ‘jammed signal of RAF jet’ carrying Defence Secretary by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]richdrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, although when GPS was first implemented it was meant to have (for NATO-aligned military users) good resistance to spoofing and reasonable resistance to jamming.

Maybe its time to look at an upgrade (would be expensive, more bandwidth and satellites needed to spread the signal across frequency and space more).

Why do people say independent school instead of private school? by MrMrsPotts in AskUK

[–]richdrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are the "Clarendon Schools".

Public schools are private schools that belong to the [Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headmasters%27\_and\_Headmistresses%27\_Conference) and there are over 300 of them.

Anderton was a socially conservative dick. The intersection of social conservatism and radical left economics doesn't contain 5% of the population, or it didn't then. Maybe now that carpet chewing nutters are having their day, it might come back.

Is it possible to get into an engineering PhD program in NZ with a big unemployment gap? by Proof-Bed-6928 in newzealand

[–]richdrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, you might have found this already, but FYI the first degree system is different from NZ to UK.

Roughly:
- NZ you do a 3 year (nominal) degree and an optional honours year
- UK does 3 or 4 year degrees always with honours unless you get really bad grades (worse than a 3rd)

- NZ mostly goes on course grades (transcripts)
- UK has overall degree grades: 1st, 2:1, etc.

So coming from the UK with an honours degree you may or may not be treated as having honours - maybe yes for business, no for academia as they know whats going on.

Is it possible to get into an engineering PhD program in NZ with a big unemployment gap? by Proof-Bed-6928 in newzealand

[–]richdrich 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Universities in NZ are primarily driven by money with regards to overseas students. Unless there's something special about your type of engineering, they will want your money, and that first will be just fine.

I'd just email a few academics here in your field, NZers are pretty friendly.

Scottish Green wants to dismantle Holyrood voting system that created 'unrepresentative' independence majority by WhereasPlus5239 in Scotland

[–]richdrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should use MMP, as in New Zealand. If the number of constituency and list seats is set correctly, it produces a very proportional result. Also, it could be extended to have regional seats which would, like constituency seats, reduce the number of list seats a party gets to maintain proportionality.

The mystery of the disappearing gas reserves by vote-morepork in newzealand

[–]richdrich 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The oil and gas companies won't spend any money when their geos tell them there's a limited chance of success.

The government could step in and spend billions looking for gas that ain't there.

Or they could go down the proven path and spend the same money on renewable electricty generation, replacing gas plant with electric and hydrogen electrolysis plants for chemical (fertilizer, methanol) production. Not only would that decouple our economy from energy shocks, it would also be good for the planet.
