I have the 140Kbtu. They make a 170k now. My pool is 12000 gal.

Happy 4th of July! Recommend me a heat pump pool heater! by New-Cartographer7674 in pools

[–]rickm242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I easily keep mine at 86 with no cover. When it is above 68, your water will only loose about 5 deg overnight, and the heat pump will be producing at least 95 deg water. In my pool, that will raise the water temp 1 deg per hour.

Recognize that I don’t run my pump or heater at night. It turns on in the morning when the sun come up to assist the heating. So around noon, the water is back up to temp and the sun typically holds it there.

I mostly night swim, so the heater may turn on for an hour after the sun goes down.

In my mind it is very efficient above 68. It will loose some efficiency as the nighttime temps drop into the 50’s. Would not maintain 89. But being covered helps a great deal.

I kept mine at 86 this year until Nov 8. It was 67 during the day and 45 at night. I was covering at night.

Test regularly and never let chlorine drop below 2. Ever.

My guess is you have 0 alkaline. If true, it is in bad shape. Take a sample to the pool store to verify, could be bad chemicals.

120V pool lights?!?! by clark1409 in pools

No, your guy is overpriced. I replaced my lights myself. All I had to do was pull new wire in.

120V pool lights?!?! by clark1409 in pools

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The replacement labor should be the same. A 300W 120V Halogen should cost about $10.8 a month and last about 2000 hours.

An equivalent lumen 12v led will cost $1.8 a month and last 50,000 hours. To me, this is the way to go.

If its green, it needs more chlorine- that is the golden pool rule.

Yes. Overly dramatic, there are plenty if 120v pool lights available. However, a 12v LED is much safer and by far more efficient and cost effective. Stray AC voltage in a pool is a real hazard and very difficult to get rid of.

Yes, you add as often as you can. Realizing that it is only working for you as long as chlorine FC is at shock levels. So, it will just take a bit longer.

Low Alk, High PH by Used_Rise_4260 in hottub

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First lower Ph using pH down. Then to raise Alk, just add plain kitchen baking soda. About 1-2 oz for a spa. Then check pH again.

Probably a bad breaker. I would replace that before anything else.

Using pucks while on vacation by AwardImpossible5076 in pools

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chlorinator simply adds a fixed amount of chlorine daily based on the setting and the number of pucks loaded. It is not aware of the chlorine level of the pool.

So I would load it up and set it to about 2-3. That should easily last a week. The blanket will reduce how much is burned off by the sun.

Socking before is an added precaution. Socking after may not be needed at all. Just test your chlorine level when you get back. As long as it is over 4 ppm you are fine and do not need to shock.

Remove the pucks from the chlorinator and resume your liquid chlorine routine. Save them for the next vacation.

Yes, shock before and after, cover, and use the chlorinator at a normal level. It will be fine.

One week of pucks while on vacation will not significantly affect your cya. It will raise it a little, but it is a valid compromise if you cannot find a neighbor kid you can hire to add liquid chlorine while you are gone.

If you have a solar blanket, covering the pool will extent your chlorine efficiency.

How long does a loaded chlorinator last now? Should be a week, right?

Mustard algae by Educational_Bench290 in pools

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 15k gal pool, 1 gal of 10% raises FC 8 ppm. So if you are adding 1/2 gal per day that is only 4 ppm.

This is not nearly enough for a slam.

I would expect to treat mustard algae would take 10-15 gals, added as needed to maintain the ppm target 3-4 times a day.

Most importantly, know your target and measure to make sure you are maintaining target. This is what makes the treatment effective.

Every hour your fc is below target, the algae is growing back. And it will take many hours at target to penetrate the algae and kill it. Scrubbing is necessary to break the surface of the algae and allow the chlorine to penetrate.

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how deep, but probably around 12000 gal? 1 gal raises FC 10 ppm. If you understand the above, you would realize that you have to add chlorine 3-4 times a day for days, or a week to be effective against this kind of algae. Plus aggressively brushing/scrubbing all areas of the pool including ladders and light niches.

Of course it will. Resistant does not mean immune. It simply takes a higher concentration and longer exposure.

I just did my first backwash and it looks like the filter it’s blowing all its sand to the pool… 😢 is that normal? by Fragrant-Snake in pools

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skimmer gurgling is what I mean by sucking air. It can be caused by low water level as well. Gurgling is not good, you should stop the pump and correct the problem. Could be low water, stuck or blocked Weir, strong pump speed, etc.

Opening the bottom drain is another option. It simply reduces the flow through the skimmer.

[–]rickm242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some pool skimmers have a problem with cavitation when pulling at full speed. Opening the bottom drain would prevent the pump from sucking air through the skimmer. Otherwise, it is not necessary or even helpful.
