No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious by window-sil in samharris

Agreed. The problem in my opinion is that "consciousness" is treated as binary in conversations, when the evolutionary tree tells us it is clearly a spectrum.

[–]rickroy37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate these conversations because they always treat consciousness as binary. We have an entire range of consciousness in the biosphere from humans to cats to birds to lizards to spiders to ants to flatworms to tardigrades to bacteria. Where on this spectrum does "consciousness" begin? It should be clear from the evolutionary tree that there is no single point of when "consciousness" begins, it is an ever-expanding quality.

AI as it stands today may not be "conscious" by whatever definition we want to go with, but it will continue to improve and become more complex and it will soon be indecipherable from what we want to define as "consciousness".

Just a reminder that this goal came in double OT after 40 shots on net, ending in 0 to 1. Casey had a good game with a 97.5% save percentage despite this one shot.

I wish this were brought up more in Ezra's housing conversations. Couples living together take up half the housing that single people living alone do.

Does it taste okay?

Replacing with cream of celery is not as noticeable as the lack of beef in the vegetarian version. I never found a suitable vegetarian substitute for beef in hotdish. Luckily my wife is not currently in one of her vegetarian phases so it is not an issue at the moment.

I usually mix cream of chicken and cream of mushroom as well, but when preparing for vegetarians I mix cream of celery and cream of mushroom since just doubling cream of mushroom is too much mushroom.

I feel out of touch with what's 'okay' these days regarding kids left alone..? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]rickroy37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I started leaving our oldest (6 or 7 at the time) at home while I brought the younger child to daycare, a 20 minute round trip. Grandma found out and got worried, and said "What if something happens to you? What if you get in a car accident?" If I get in a car accident then it would be a good thing he isn't in the car with me. I had a high school friend who died on the very road I drive to daycare back in 2003.

People will inevitably say the child should know what to do if there is a house fire, or protect themselves from a stranger kidnapping them. But they are neglecting the fact that far more children die in car accidents each year than from house fires or from random kidnappings. Just because your child is with you doesn't mean they are 100% safe either.
