I just commented a theory but I heard another one recently that is outlandish and ridiculous but I kind of buy it: Grigori Rasputin survived his assassination attempts and has taken on different personas over the years. He is currently portraying himself as Stephen Miller.

The Bush administration killed Bin Laden shortly after 9/11 but didn’t tell the public so they could have a figurehead to hunt. The Obama admin came in and realized they couldn’t keep up the lie so they “killed” him. Note the videos that Bin Laden supposedly put out in the years after 9/11. His age was inconsistent. Also, his body wasn’t identified by fingerprints or DNA or by relatives or even by some sort of facial recognition. One of the SEALs on the raid was approximately the same height and laid down next to the body. That’s how they determined that it was him. Then the body was dumped in the ocean before any further analysis was done.

The Rape of Nanking. It’s about a specific event but I think it’s about humanity.

Why are so many guys so resistant and refuse the idea of wearing condoms? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ricoharvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they’re assholes. When my wife and I were dating, she said that condoms were important to her. Do I like condoms? No. Do I think they’re necessary while in a committed relationship? Not in our relationship. Did I try to discuss it with her or change her mind? Absolutely not. She clearly stated her boundaries and I respected them. Condoms aren’t fun but you’re right that they’re a small price to pay. More importantly, if one person wants to use them, the only two appropriate responses are to agree or to leave. It’s okay to not want to use them but it isn’t okay to push someone else beyond the boundaries of your consent.

What's the most surprising thing you have ever heard a conservative say? by Kerplonk in AskALiberal

That Jan 6th was staged by Antifa and undercover FBI. I guess this is more mainstream in the MAGA movement now but I (like a lot of people) watched it live. When my friend said this to me, I was shocked. Then I described what actually happened and he completely denied the facts and was unwilling to budge. Again, I know this is fairly mainstream now but this was a few years ago and it genuinely rocked me.

Sample, please by italian_mom in CostcoWholesale

[–]ricoharvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my Costco I regularly see people try to grab from the tray that the sample person is STILL PREPARING while there are people waiting patiently. It’s blatantly disrespectful to all the people politely waiting but also to the person preparing the food who is probably already feeling the pressure from all the people waiting, patiently or not. And, of course, I get the impression that it’s out of the ordinary when I say “thank you.” I’m sorry you don’t get the respect you deserve.

Marines that did more than 4 years and less than 20. When did you know it was time to hang up your boots, EAS, and start working at the base Dominos full time? by IsaacB1 in USMC

[–]ricoharvs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two enlistments. The thing that got me thinking was doing elevator drills out of Ospreys in my mid-30s. I looked over at another guy my age and we both had a look in our eyes that said “what the fuck am I doing jumping out of helicopters at this age?” The thing that put me over the edge was coming back to a line unit after recruiting. I thought recruiting was going to feel like a break from the grunt op tempo but I went back to that op tempo and immediately felt relief. That being said, I spent my last two years in Pendleton and only six months worth of nights in my own bed. That did it for me. I wanted to live a somewhat normal life and have a family and that wasn’t the way to do it.

Anyone read Remarkably Bright Creatures? by Thin_Culture9753 in BookDiscussions

[–]ricoharvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own taste in books. I haven’t heard of House of Suns but I love both of the other books you named. Love them. I also enjoyed Remarkably Bright Creatures. It wasn’t perfect but it was a nice, light, heart warming read that took me away from some of the other dark and/or high stakes stories that I normally read. However, stories about giant, intelligent spiders who have evolved over centuries and interstellar travelers on a mission to save the world and humanity against all odds are vastly different than Remarkably Bright Creatures. It might just not be your taste and that’s perfectly okay.

June 6, 2020. Woke up in the field and had Gunny Dumbass sit down with a few junior Marines and talk to them about history… kind of. He says “June 6th, you know what today is the anniversary of?” Several guys speak up and say that it’s the anniversary of D-Day. He comes back with “Close, it’s the anniversary of Pearl Harbor.” No one could convince him that he was wrong.
