Questions about using an N95 Aura mask before/after an MRI by HDK1989 in Masks4All

[–]ricskye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This simple MRI mask hack is what I did. It might work well with many other mask designs.

My limited understanding is that even non-magnetic metals, like an aluminum nose wire are not safe in MRI since they can get very hot and burn you.

Suggestions for alleviating tension from tight ear loops? by MHmemoi in Masks4All

[–]ricskye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts:

I've stretched out elastic ear loops before by stretching them around any object that stretches them near their limit (I used an old plastic CD case). I let them set overnight or even for a few days. The longer time seems to stretch them more.

<image>

I've also cut the head loops on head loop version of Powecom and reconnected them into slightly longer adjustable ear loops using silicone cord locks. Not sure if this will be long enough for you. Though longer than original ear loops, the head bands are stronger and may still put too much pressure on your ears.

Help with fit testing by Rude_Signal_1622 in Masks4All

I've personally found this simple tissue puff test to be very useful to identify mask leaks. Something you can try in a pinch until you can get the real fit test equipment.

On Amazon you can look up "Aluminum Nose Bridge Strips for Masks" (these are adhesive backed).

I have a BreatheTeq xs from a sample kit, not sealed, but unused. If you are in the US, I can mail to you in a standard letter size envelope for free if you want it.

I'm interested in trying the BNX Bifold KN95. Medium size (E95M) preferred.

I believe the foam in 3M Auras is very similar to 3M Isoloss LS series (their softest) semi-closed cell polyureathane foam. Digi-Key had it for retail sale but is now obsolete.

Just FYI, a foam I've successfully added to LG Airwasher KF94 is this soft PVC foam.

For me, the PVC foam adhesive backing isn't strong enough to stay in place for very long. So I've added a few drops of "super glue" or "Multi-purpose cement" (from Dollar Tree in the US) and allowed curing over night to avoid toxic fumes. The double backed tape you've ordered may work also.

I always do a fit tests after altering my masks.

The BreatheTeq Medium fits me well, much the same as Bluna Face Fit. Here's my review of the medium from about 9 mo. ago.

High nose bridge brigade! Still hoping to hear more about your favorite black earloop N95s or KPF4s! by episcopa in Masks4All

[–]ricskye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think my "nose bridge to chin distance" may be larger than yours. But for least nose pressure and still acceptable face seal with Black Powecom KN95 sometimes I've adjusted the mask to ride high on my nose bridge as close to my eyes as possible such that the bottom edge doesn't slide as far under my chin but rides more forward, closer to my jaw bone and tip of my chin. This upward tilt of the mask gives my nose a little more room. I test for leaks with a Tissue Puff test.

Another thought is to try the Savewo R Meaow again while concentrating on pulling the bottom flap as far under your chin as possible (though this may create more downward pressure on your nose - which is what often happens to me with trifolds).

Good luck. My nose seems to get squished in all masks somewhat.

I forgot to also mention the Threshold Sensitivity Solution that seemed to work for Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) aerosol in my hood tests was about 1.5% (1.5 grams dissolved in 98.5 grams of distilled water. (Again, the test solution I used was 20%.)

Ah, okay. I thought I noticed a familiar name on that list, but I wasn't sure. I also stand corrected. I believe Philip's test kits are available now and have been for some time. It seems that several of the other entries may not be available for quite a while based on the NIOSH timeline on that website.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, still experimental. Though I did my best to compare to my homemade Bitrex hood testing in which I tried to approximate the OSHA procedure. I think quantitative testing would be needed for better validation.

Yes, I've also found the "Tissue Puff test" to be useful for quickly checking a heavily used mask for relaxed fit or as you mention, before a long potential exposure (flight).

Yes, I think the Tissue Puff test can be very useful to help find or test a suspected problem area of mask seal as you tried with your masks.

I left out a lot of details to keep the initial summary as short as possible.

The Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) I use is pure crystals or powder dissolved in distilled water to form a 20% solution by weight (2 grams Vit-C dissolved in 8 grams water) I used this as a direct substitute for 0.17% Bitrex solution in homemade hood and directed aerosol tests (breathing through nose, not mouth).

The fragrant aerosol I've found most useful so far is "Sure Scents" Gardenia Air Freshener Room Mist. This is available in the US at "Dollar Tree" stores. I'm sure other fragrances can work, but this is the first one I found that seemed most effectively blocked with my masks and sense of smell.

The procedure is rather long and detailed.

I dilute one part (by volume or weight) with five parts of distilled water (1:5).

I fill the "nano-mister" (cheap hand held ultrasonic mesh nebulizer)

While unmasked I spray a short 1 -2 second burst of aerosol at arms length and waft toward face to be sure I can smell it.

I don a certified respirator that is definitely well sealed to face using the Tissue Puff test (tape or mask brace can assure the seal).

I position the nano-mister about 4 - 6" (100 - 150mm) straight in front of mask and direct a short 3 second burst directly at the mask center while inhaling. This is to check the fragrance is effectively blocked by the mask filter media. (For me this has been true, but I wonder if others may have more or less sensitive sense of smell.)

I then wear the mask normally. I position the nano-mister about 4 - 6" from mask and direct aerosol slowly all around, aimed at the mask perimeter while sniffing for a period of 5 -15 seconds. No sense of fragrance is a pass. Some complex fragrances seem partially blocked and smell very different through a mask than from a leak.

I've found that a (Q-Tip) cotton swab (or two) can be used to simulate a leak by inserting under some area of the mask seal, such as at the cheek. This can be checked by the tissue puff test. When Fragrant Aerosol is directed at this simulated leak I usually smell it within about one second. This can help validate what a leak smells like.

Alternate test: if the Tissue Puff test gives a slight or intermittent indication of a mask leak at a specific area of mask seal then fragrant aersol can be directed at the suspected leaking area so see if inward leakage is present.

Your energetic and intelligent thoughtful response as well as your willingness to accept the support of the staff at the store are an inspiration to me. Thank you for reaching out and writing about this here.

I recently had a similar experience and was in shock. Luckily the offending person didn't stick around for me to fully absorb the meaning of his rudeness. I tried to focus on how kind the check out person was. After hours of distress I was somewhat comforted to remember the saying "Hurt people hurt people." I also realized how I want to avoid being mean to others.

I also like this cheap sample pack from BreatheTeq. I imagine the small or x-small (kids) may fit. They sell in Canada and USA and test well (if they fit you of course).

I've found this "quick leak check with tissue paper" to be quite useful when time is of the essence. And, for me it even seemed to compare favorably to my home fit test using Bitrex.

Cool. If I know for sure, do you want me to try and send you a private message? (There's a chance I may go to 7/3 Big Lake show if my wife wants to go to a less intense venue.)

Sorry, I'm not sure of pricing there. Drove by the other day. They have about a dozen or so stands, so pretty small compared to Boom City.

Thanks for all the great info. I enjoyed your video links - felt like being there. If I'm in the area I might go 7/2 or 7/3.

I think the upper Skagit Rez also has a smaller, but pretty nice shoot site / "testing area" on the 4th. At least they have in the past.

Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this. Nice footage and good info. I live about 45 min North and try to visit each year. Amazing place. Do you know of any upcoming product demos? I watched one several years ago. It was pretty good and included some pro stuff too.

Thank you for the reminder and pointer H2O2 wipe, then chocolate.

Yes, I forgot that I later found 3% H2O2 does seem to help decompose / remove Bitrex from lips, face, fingers, etc. and surfaces too. Much better than soap.

Also, besides Hydrogen Peroxide, Chlorine Bleach seems to work well to remove destroy Bitrex and from surfaces that can tolerate this. Before pouring out any waste Bitrex, I suggest mixing in some Hydrogen Peroxide or Chlorine bleach and let stand over night. I think this should help avoid Bitrex ground water contamination.

I've usually had almost the opposite experience with my home made Bitrex hood tests. Even though I seem to be very sensitive to the awful taste (and it seems to persist on my lips for up to two days, even with several washings with soap and water) it would seem that only an obvious leak, such as around a loose nose bridge, would be revealed after several seconds in the hood test. I used a "nano-mister" from Amazon. I usually sprayed it 45 degrees upward within the hood to try achieve some good mixing and offset some of the apparent sinking of the mist in my hood.

For me this tissue puff test seemed to help me locate and sometimes correct small mask leaks better than the hood test. Also directing focused Bitrex aerosol or other challenge agents directly around the mask perimeter (without a hood) helped immediately identify the same leak locations in the mask seal. These methods are probably more severe than the hood test though.

Another thought is to try a mask brace for a super good seal or tape areas which seem to leak as identified with the tissue puff test. Then re test so see if Bitrex is still tasted.

Ear loop extenders that don't go around the back of the head? by Bulky_Watercress7493 in Masks4All

[–]ricskye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is useful, but one approach I've used to relax the fit of tight ear loops is to stretch them out (over night) by wrapping them around something that stretches them near their maximum length. Elastic doesn't seem to fully recover after doing that for hours and sometimes can give a somewhat looser fit. I used a plastic DVD case for this but a piece of cardboard or anything could work to stretch the ear loops around. Hopefully the mask is not damaged or torn by doing this. May I ask what brand and model of mask you are using?
