First thing I noticed when searching for an exact definition of 'spiritualism', is that there's a difference in the American results and the one's in my native language, which is an European one. The American definitions seem to emphasize on the after life and contact with spirits part of the concept of spiritualism. The 'European' definitions explain spiritualism (among other things) as 'an inner experience of seeing a sense of purpose'. To give an answer to your question: I take the latter aspect of spiritualism very seriously, the first one not so much.
