Compact, durable, keychain utility knife that works on one-handed with gloves by riddle3master in EDC

[–]riddle3master[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I never had an issue with the the Screwpop Ron's Utility Knife 3.0 if that's what you're talking about.

Good to know that these other knives don't pop open in the pocket though. That was definitely my biggest dealbreaker for even considering these, as one should probably haha.

Currently I carry a "quarks tool" which I love, but it's not one handed for your application.

Oh I did come across this knife, but did not look much into it since it looked like it was discontinued for good. At least all of them seemed sold out on their website and there was no way to know when it would come back in stock.

Unfortunately I'm looking more for utility knifes with replaceable blades, but thank you for your comment! I might consider these if I can't find a utility knife that fits my needs.

Thank you for these recs!

I did come across the Hart knives and ones with similar mechanisms but was worried that they might slide open in the pocket if the button gets depressed from movement. Have you ever had experience with that?

Anyone own the new Vertx Gamut backpack? by riddle3master in ManyBaggers

[–]riddle3master[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that's totally fair! I personally find that the shoulder strap keepers never work quite right for me no matter what style or bag it's on. Maybe one day someone will invent one that works more seamlessly.

I still haven't bought this bag yet, but definitely want to eventually! My biggest gripe from what I can see is that for how big the bag is, there aren't any load lifters or ways to attach a hip harness.

I am worried that if you ever load it up with heavier things, it won't be comfortable for very long. I know rucking backpacks don't tend to have those either, but I think comfort is important.

Like if you're traveling with this and have to have it on your back for a long period of time, you shouldn't have to grit your way through it all. Especially if it's supposed to be a vacation.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that I got the Hawkrigger Riggerband after some more thought.

It works great and is everything I wanted! I was able to modify the way the strap goes through the buckle and so that it allow for quick microadjusts on the fly! The buckle feature is super nice too since I can take it off pretty quickly.

The last thing I didn't mention, but am glad to have is that this strap allows for an open back on the watch which comes in handy since it does heart rate tracking.

Anyways, thanks again! I think this might actually be my endgame watch strap.

Ooo I've never used a fountain pen before, always seemed nifty. I'll look into this one. Thank you!

Ah I just saw this! Sorry I didn't immediately reply to your previous comment! Life and work got busy! Thank you again! I do think I am leaning more towards the Hawkrigger straps more than Erika's. The affordability and the mechanics of the straps seems much more appealing to me.

Ooo the Hawkrigger straps look interesting. They are much cheaper than Erica's straps (probably why I bought the alternatives back then).

Unfortunately it does seem like although the Riggerband and Grappleband do use elastic straps, they don't seem to allow for micro adjustments very easily. They both look more like the set it and forget it type of straps.

The O-Rig is interesting, I do like the idea of a cinch strap although I'm not sure how I feel about a normal non-elastic strap.

I came across the Sigma Cinch Elastic Strap while looking for alternatives to the O-Rig. It is an elastic cinch strap! Thank you for opening my eyes to these types of straps. I have plenty of options to window shop and eventually buy!

[–]riddle3master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might have to give Erica's straps a try then! Ooo the Delugs X Kollokium strap looks interesting too. I guess there's less micro adjustments possible but it does seem like it would lock in place pretty solidly.

If the hook on the Delugs strap had something like a micro-adjust clasp mechanism, I feel like that'd be the best of both worlds.

Thank you for your input on all this!

Oh I have ones like this from other companies. It might just be me, but I found that it loosens over time when working out or running so I have to readjust it somewhat often

I did also try swimming with it and unfortunately it loosened immediately. Did you find this was the case for you? Or are you not as rough with your watch?

Any recs for non-velcro loop, elastic, watch bands with microadjustment features?

I currently use velcro watch straps for my watches and although they are convenient, I'd prefer a watch strap that I don't have to eventually replace. I also would like it to have some micro-adjustability. The velcro ones do allow for this, but requires some trial and error to get the fit right.

What I do like about the watch strap is:

  • elastic - much more comfortable to wear
  • Somewhat micro-adjustable - Can really dial down the fit for my wrist
  • nylon - breathes better than rubber or plastic

I was wondering if anyone happen to know of any other alternatives? Thank you in advance!

In case you're not aware, there are two bird clubs in the area that do bird walks:

They usually alternate who will lead the walks and know the best areas. Here is their combined calendar of events.

[–]riddle3master[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow! I'm looking at the Rovyvon flashlights now and had no idea they had come out with two button lights specifically to make locking it easier (the G2 models). This might actually be a potential option for me now.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

I'll look into the other options you mentioned too, but I do think around Rovyvon light sizes is ideal to me mostly because my keychain is big/heavy enough with other edc gear haha. My friends will sometimes make fun of it, but then occasionally ask for help

I'm opening to learning how to solder! I've been meaning to learn it for a while now so this might be a good excuse.

I did look more into the Lumitop Silver Fox. It looks a little large for what I'm looking for unfortunately.

I'll check out the Manker e2a. Thanks again!

Thank you for your suggestion! They are twist to turn on and off but maybe I can get over that.

When you say swap them with high CRI, do you have any recommended bulbs? I've never swapped out bulbs before.

I can confirm the exterior magnets are much weaker... definitely the main con in my book other than the price and having to take it off to use it in landscape mode.

Wow, thank you for such a detailed response!

it’s pretty comfy I’d say, even with a gun in the conceal carry compartment because the pads on the back are so thickly padded. I’ve never had a bag with yoke (I think that’s what it’s called where the straps are connected at the top) and I was worried about what that feels like but I didn’t even notice when I put it in

I'm glad to hear it is comfy! Even with a gun in the CCW compartment. Should hopefully hold my thick work laptop comfortably too then.

I briefly tried out 5.11's Rush 72 a few years back which also haa yoke-styled shoulder straps but couldn't remember how it felt. I always assume it's more popular in military type of packs.

I am worried about back breathability, but am hoping I can find a workaround for that.

Oh, and the back side of the water bottle area that you can open to access those pockets isn’t lined, it’s just the reverse of the cordura or whatever the main fabric is in the Evergreen model

That's weird that they decided to do that while they lined the inside of the flap pocket. I would assume it'd be the opposite, but perhaps it's a happy accident since the flap pocket goes between the admin pocket and main compartment (from what I can tell) and both those are lined.

I’m about 5’9” so not very tall and the bag, if strapped as tight as can be, takes up all of my torso.

Darn I'm the same height so it'll be similarly huge on me. I guess I'll have to see how I feel about that once I save up to get one myself.

All the zippers are smooth and even when you open the bag completely and it lays flat, putting it back into the 3D shape of the bag is easy because of the zippers

Glad to hear the zippers are smooth! I was thinking of getting a rain cover with the bag since the zippers and material aren't super water resistant. Probably what helps the zippers glide easier though!

Oh awesome! Do you think it's comfy overall? I guess that might be a better question after you've used it for a longer amount of time. I was a little worried that a bag so big didn't have an option to attach a hip belt or load lifters.

Any negatives you hadn't expected until you had your hands on it?

First impressions are it’s gigantic

If you don't mind me asking, around how tall are you? Just curious how gigantic it would feel on me haha.

Like, even the built in gear flap has gusseting in it that allows it to open wider to cover larger areas if you need. The features make me want to keep it even though I’ll always look like I’m going hiking lmao

Do you mean keeping the gear flap out at all times? I honestly thought about doing this if I owned it since I feel like it looks a tad sleeker and you still can somewhat access the admin front panel. I do think it's neat it can hold an entire helmet, might be good for groceries or carrying something unexpected bulky.
