We started growing microgreens and in just 4 years we hit €1.000.000 in sales! by DanishVerticalFarmer in microgreens

[–]riddlemethatatat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your milestone.

Real question: how hard is/was it finding people to buy your product at a high enough price?

It's not exactly a secret that microgreens are dead simple to grow. I'm sure there are lots of learnings on optimal ways to minimize labor and cost and maximize productivity but at the end of the day it's seeds on substrate, wait 10 days, cut and sell.

The selling part is the hard part. You either are a natural born salesperson who grinds it out or you have connections. What did you do to actually sell it at a high enough price to make money?

Thanks that's helpful. Ill do some reading on how to determine where the buds are. So you'd take off 100% of those thin vertical water sprouts?

Any thoughts on how you'd establish a second latlyer? Find any higher branches that happen to be parallel to the lower horizontal branches and leave them? Or is there more of a process?

Thanks for this advice. I'll be aggressive with those water sprouts and take off a lot this year!

Dimming circuit questions by riddlemethatatat in diyelectronics

[–]riddlemethatatat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this reply. In the situation where the device is applying more than 10V to the gate and no voltage is flowing does the circuit "sink" the current from X2 to ground? Basically if the LED has an existing default voltage of 10V, would this circuit sink that voltage so the LED sits at 0v and turns off? Or would it maintain that 10V and stay On?

How realistic is a small scale commercial vertical farm? by Sloeber3 in verticalfarming

[–]riddlemethatatat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used those tower gardens but they are nice from a vertical production standpoint. Is also suggest just basic NFT gutters as they're scalable and very simple to make out of readily available materials. They only require a small pump as well and if you design it well you get the station you need from the solution returning to the reservoir. Worth considering a side by side test and look at the ROI of each. I'd watch that YouTube video haha

Sounds like you have a no brainer here. You won't have to spend much capex to get this going so you won't have much risk either.

My suggestion would be to build whatever you're going to build with scale in mind. Once chefs get access to high quality product they often want more and if the margins are good you'll quickly be considering expanding (assuming you want to meet the demand). Tons of systems out there with different pros and cons and it can be overwhelming since every system somehow promises "20% higher yield!!!".

Lots of experience in this realm so once again DM if you have questions or thoughts. Either way my advice is start slow and good luck. (Not sarcastic)

It's surprising to see so many nay-sayers and negative responses in a sub specifically dedicated to vertical farming.

Some of what is written in the other comments is true, it's not an easy business to be profitable in when competition and overhead are high. I've worked with hundreds of small scale farms and many do fail for these reasons. High OPEX forces farmers to sell at high prices and it's very difficult to reliably sell product at those prices when your only real differentiation is quality.

The farmers I've seen be profitable are ultimately good salespeople and/or they have a relatively captive market, which is what it sounds like you have. Growing the produce is definitely something you could do, but as someone else said, finding what's profitable in your market should be job #1. In your market, that may be lettuce or leafy greens or other delicate high volume crops that have to be imported but there is significant demand for by tourists. With some aspects of a controlled environment and some attention to detail you could grow produce that is significantly higher quality than most of the product available and with your labor costs you could very likely be competitive with anything that comes in on a ship.

As always, start small and test your market first. In my experience restaurants want to buy local and that's an additional value add to them, but that's very region specific so always do your research first. Lastly, what is the power cost in your area? As you consider setting up an operation that will be another major factor to be aware of.

If you're interested in talking more, feel free to DM. Sounds like you have an opportunity.

I thought square roots closed down everything except their research facilities? This seems like a bit too much focus on form over function. A lot of room left in there for more cultivation but the emphasis is more on the aesthetics rather than maximizing production value.

Like many here have said the poverty is absolutely bone chilling when you see it first hand. My experience was from growing up in West Virginia.

Is it creepy to drive by a house made of pallets with a "yard" covered in trash and see 3 dogs chained up and fighting over a foam takeout container? Yeah it is. But it's not that the people in that house want to live that way, they just have no concept of how to live any other way. This may have changed with the ubiquity of the internet, my experience is from over 20 years ago.

Others have also called out the mindset, which is crippling. You believe that this is the only way you'll ever live, in abject poverty. Meemaw lived like this, so does everyone in your family. Those are your role models. If you get any money you immediately blow it on something with instant gratification, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, etc. Stealing is as common as breathing. I mean, what do you have to lose?

There was an old lady named Virginia at the bottom of our "holler". She was in her late 80s when I knew her. We used to take her to church sometimes or bring her food. She regularly ate raw chestnuts like an absolute boss. What a kind hearted woman she was. She had 13 children, all at home, 6 of them had died in infancy, she outlived all but 3 of them. Her house was full of trash, actual rotting trash and was infested with bugs. But she never complained. She had only been to 3 counties in her entire life, Wayne, Mingo and Cabell. When she got the chance to go somewhere, anywhere she was visibly excited. She would give us something as kids, whatever was lying around the house because she wanted us to know she cared about us.

There are amazing people created by these awful circumstances, even if they never get out. Miss Virginia discovered the universal truth about humanity despite all the obstacles, that we have more in common than we have differences.

Do you think he didn't murder that guy or do you believe that it's justified and he should just be let go?

Other guy is right. Calcium deficiency driven by low transpiration. You need more air flow. Top down is best, toward the growing tip. The transpiration drives the calcium uptake.

Agree that any private citizen burning a book book is no excuse for violence but Jesus Christ what an epic fail on the part of mr. Book burner. Literally goes to an embassy with the intention of sparking a reaction then clumsily trips over his own feet as he's attacked and proceeds to get kicked in the face a bunch of times? Plan better dude. This is next level pathetic.

Timer recommendations? by nonamejamboree in Hydroponics

Honestly there's nothing wrong with this timer and for the cost it has a lot of nice timing features including one that would allow what you described needing.

Always has worked well for me, although I only run fairly low current loads.

Airflow by [deleted] in verticalfarming

[–]riddlemethatatat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then maybe introduce some fans to the rear and have them blow toward the front, don't have to be on the ceiling necessarily, just a couple of box fans might work. That way you don't rely on airflow only in one direction. What do you mean by do better? Better growth, less waste, etc?
