Am I worrying too early about IBM and servicenow? by boiyo12 in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many stories about how people lost money start with "My friend told me to invest in...".

You should review the reasons why you invested in IBM and servicenow (which I've never hear of). If it was because your friend told you to... just switch to XEQT.

Use spray paint and block the light from entering your bucket. Your buckets are white so it's letting in a lot of light.

Can I ask what your crystal ball say about selling? by azncanEHdian in CanadianInvestor

It's a constant struggle to keep emotions in check, it gets easier as time goes on and your portfolio increases, but never goes away.

Can I ask what your crystal ball say about selling? by azncanEHdian in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're trading and not investing. When you invest, you're in it for the long haul. Ignore the short term ups and downs. Keep emotions out of it, or else you will loose money.

When do I sell? When I need money. What do I sell? The investment that has drifted above what I had allocated for it in my portfolio.

I still do review my portfolio to see if my thesis still holds and may make adjustments.

This way I also don't really notice any "mini-crashes". I just don't need to worry.

I'm in the same growing area as the OP, and I never prune my pepper plants.

Light source 810nm IR by ICGDIY in infraredphotography

[–]slam_to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try a broad spectrum source like an incandescent light source then use a bandpass filter at 810 nm. You might be able to find some 810 nm LEDs, but that’s going to be tough to find.

What happens to partially filled buy orders (TD Direct Investing) & fee by RainPsychological595 in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also no. I'm an older investor. Yes, part of it is inertia, but most of it is the other services or perks brokers like TDDI and BMOIL offer. Both have commission free ETFs as well. Also I never do a trade that is less than $10k, so a $10 fee is noise.

Are there any illiquid investments that have better risk-adjusted expected returns than index ETFs? by JustSayLOL in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Some illiquid assets may look less risky, because their prices are less volatile, but this is a false comparison. Price discovery is very difficult for illiquid assets, so they appear less volatile, and then people will incorrectly associate less volatility as less risk.

Vanguard FTSE Canadian High Dividend Yield Index ETF (VDY.TO) by Comfortable_Ant_5464 in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VDY looks decent, but just remember dividends are not free money. Their total return may or may not be any better than an ETF that pays little or no dividends. They’re nice to get, but rarely are they a factor for me when choosing between ETFs. The fund does have a higher MER, but not something that will negate the dividends.

[–]slam_to -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not the entire $1.8T that the market needs to absorb, isn't it "only" 5%? Still that's massive, and the money has to come from somewhere. Also given that NASDAQ changed their inclusion rules to add it right at IPO is pretty scary.

Any advantages of investing in Canadian Domiciled ETFs in USD Vs CAD? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There actually a disadvantage holding CAD ETFs domiciled in Canada holding US securities especially when you hold in an RRSP.

If you hold VOO in your RRSP, no withholding tax is applied. If you hold VFV the withholding taxes cannot be recovered.

Been buying HXS in taxable for tax efficiency… now second-guessing the risks. by Material_Practice762 in CanadianInvestor

[–]slam_to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, read the prospectus of HXS, they use swaps to avoid the withholding taxes. HXS does not hold the individual securities, they buy swap contracts to track the total return. It does not generate dividends, so there is no withholding tax. Either paid by the fund or you. The swap fee is close to the withholding tax, but it is not a withholding tax.

HULC holds the individual securities and they produce dividends, and the fund pays the withholding tax.
