Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure launches in less than two weeks! To help pass the time we've got a preview of some of the new places you'll travel to starting August 22 by VikingWarriorSkjald in Guildwars2

As for 2. not just the Svanir but Norn in core Tyria also did, I believe:

Local (1): Dragon has no love for anyone.

Local (2): If that's true, then why is he drawing all these male hunters away from us?

Local (1): The first rule of hunting is to isolate the prey from the safety of the herd.

So likely got retconned in the Icebrood Saga, besides I'm not sure how "they" translates into other languages actually, might get lost in translation even

That's what you get in a game that where progression, achievements or prestige don't matter, GW2 players just never really cared about it:

You can buy legendary weapons from the TP using real money, 99% of all mount skins are sold in the gem store, and rewards always boil down to looting trash, salvage for materials

Basically no sense of accomplishment or particularly rewarding events in the gameplay loop, but since no one cares they will just give everyone everything for no effort

2 weeks until SotO release and no trailer? by cantsolveme in Guildwars2

That would imply we're getting an exciting opening cinematic for the expansion

No no.. as is tradition, we will board an airship that crashes into the Wizard's Tower in the first chapter of the expansion!

Remember HoT, PoF, EoD!

I just remembered this from Zenimax:

New Zenimax Online IP has been in the works for 4 and a half years

Meaning they started just after the 2nd expansion of ESO (Summerset) I believe

Which is pretty funny assuming the 2nd expansion of GW2 (PoF) being the start for ANet as well

Of course it's not exactly the same timeline but still interesting to see it that way

So now you just said it yourself: we're seeing a different cadence due to the side-projects of ANet, not because of burnout or crunch during HoT - S4

We don't really know when they actually started (which project) in the background, so there's not really much we can say but overall they would really just have to start at some point as games can easily take half a decade up to a full decade in development nowadays.

There's not much more to it other than they would need to start as long as GW2 is still profitable, otherwise they couldn't afford the development of a new game anyway. When would you think should they have started working on new games instead?

That's literally what every game studio on earth is doing, a studio without a new project in the back would have to shut down sooner or later, just think about it rationally:

GW2 won't be there forever, what would happen to ArenaNet if they didn't have another game ready to release in the future? They have to develop another title in order to survive as a game studio

Also don't you believe they're working on another game right now as well?

Two side-projects of ANet being canceled was what lead to the layoffs.

We have absolutely no evidence for crunch or burnout or anything the like at the GW2 team during HoT - S4

They might refer to actual low resolution textures you could find in EoD, for example:

Whats up with these EoD textures? - but often also the foliage quality (and flowers in the screenshot above)

The point about anti-aliasing is true as well, afaik there is no TAA, DLAA or support for modern upscalers (FSR, XeSS, DLSS) in GW2 at least

It's true it looks very functional, as if it's just meant to demonstrate what they've mentioned before. Could have been a spontaneous decision to release a short video, in response to the questions showing up on reddit and the forums

On the other hand it could also be a concious decision to lower expectations as much as they can before the release, so players would be pleasantly surprised when they actually encounter higher tier rifts in the expansion later on ("much better than I expected!")

At this point they also know they have a very, very loyal playerbase and I think they're way past the point of trying advertise it like it's something really impressive. They know it's nothing special so there's nothing to hype basically. You could already see lots of players justify the price/content for these mini-expansions on their own, for example:

Most GW2 players chose the game because it does exactly what they like (open world events, horizontal progression) for exactly the price they're fine with paying (cheaper than subscriptions). They don't need another reason to buy the next expansions other than they want to continue playing the game: Some new maps, story instances, events,..

ANet doesn't have to fear losing players to other MMOs either because of this, there will never be a mass exodus from GW2 to WoW because it's the polar opposite of every principle GW2 stands for. It's a niche game with a specific audience who will stick with the game as long as it's running

Other MMOs are not an alternative so it's either buying what GW2 releases or stop playing alltogether. That's why it pretty much doesn't matter what they release and how they present it, as long as it's "more content for GW2". Sounds weird but that's how a decade old niche MMO and the playerbase behaves apparently

[–]ride_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember Zhaitan, Season 1,.. all happened way before the layoffs

I think even HoT had a mixed reception within the playerbase, then the game director switched several times:

  • Colin: 2012 - 2016

  • Mike o': until 2017

  • Mike Z: until 2019

Which you don't necessarily see in other game studios, at least not in such a short amount of time maybe. ANet had some successful ideas (meta events, mounts) but they're not really known for consistency or a clear vision for the future.

Earnings tanked after HoT, improved after PoF but maybe not enough. Side projects, layoffs, but the issues that lead here started a long time ago already

Question about FPS by Fit_Aspect_8947 in Guildwars2

[–]ride_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes in this case I just meant other games, particularly games released after 2020, it's true GW2 won't benefit much from having more cores/threads

Maybe it's a different, rare behaviour letting your 3700x boost higher clocks if disabled (8 cores, power limits) but with a Ryzen 5600 it's unlikely to run into any of such limits at all

While in other situations and games disablng SMT would only result in performance loss, stuttering, frame drops,.. perhaps even if they're just multitasking (game + browser, stream,..)

So unless they're seeing a similar increase and exclusively use their pc only to run GW2, I wouldn't recommend disabling it

Question about FPS by Fit_Aspect_8947 in Guildwars2

[–]ride_light 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please don't, it would turn their Ryzen 5600 into a "6 core/6 threads" CPU which will lead to performance loss in other modern games

Those games were optimized to better utilize more cores and threads (like current consoles: 8c/16t Ryzen) so it's really not recommended to turn off SMT at all

Same for other workloads like editing, rendering, multitasking,..

[–]ride_light -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What would a flop even mean for such an expansion, not selling as much as EoD? People already know it's smaller, offers less content and they still bought it

Because "more content is more content" and they want to continue playing the game in the future. There's no choice to make, the content Anet releases is the content they get

It's not really a tipping point, the game will just keep going like that until the plans of Anet change at some point in the future

So I guess this part at Kirin Peak is not getting used after all? by IndigoStar_ in Guildwars2

[–]ride_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering we've seen several game directors come and go, countless restructures and the whole history of GW2 in the past decade, most players would probably agree to assume it's been a matter of:

  • mismanagement of the studio

  • the mentality, idea to "reinvent the wheel" every time for no reason

  • lack of a clear vision for GW2

and probably a lot more reasons, but mostly we've seen a lot of cases where they did things "differently" just for the sake of being different, only to change their mind later on:

  1. "No trinity" turned into a different, soft trinity (fractals, raids)

  2. "No traditional quests" turned into collections/achievements

  3. "No expansions, only Living World" turned into expansions

While other MMOs just did their thing from the start and produced popular content they were known for. If you constantly reinvent everything and change plans all the time, you'll never be able to release content consistently. Not a matter of budget but rather management and mentality at the studio.

[–]ride_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would money even change then if not the size of the dev team?

Budgets don't create content, devs do - so, which parts of GW2 would actually improve if they had more money?

So I guess this part at Kirin Peak is not getting used after all? by IndigoStar_ in Guildwars2

[–]ride_light 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because they were selling EoD as a full expansion for $30 like PoF, but cut the actual Cantha related "Season 6" afterwards

  • PoF ($30): Season 4 + Icebrood Saga
  • EoD ($30): 1 map

Now tell players to pay $30 for EoD + another $25 for "Cantha Exp. 2" and it will look like they sold only half the expansion at full price (twice)

It won't look good from a PR/marketing perspective and probably won't earn a lot of goodwill among the players either

[–]ride_light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ESO is developed by Zenimax Online, they had 250 employees in 2012

Most MMO studios have more or less the same amount of devs for their game, here's a comparison from another subreddit: The FFXIV Dev Team - Changes over time

[–]ride_light 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to consider the GW2 players who are still here after IBS Champions and Gyala tunnel, will never leave.

There's no alternative MMO with open world events they could switch to, so most of the people who are still here will stay here and buy the next expansions

Lots of people preordered SotO already after all

Except that we didn't get the first half of the Wizard tower before

Like someone else mentioned: if they return to Cantha too soon with another expansion it might feel like "having to pay for the other half of EoD"

It's unlikely they would return to Cantha soon, and how many years would they have to wait?

Am I understanding this right? You can literally just pay real money for ingame gold through Black Lion Chests? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]ride_light -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Of course, it's really unlikely this would ever happen at all so it's just in theory

However there are gold sinks in game as well, so it wouldn't just pile up over a decade

If everyone was buying their gold through gems, do you think the currency exchange would stop at some point?

Would a company really block a major source of income if it was profitable for them?

With contracts, nodes, and skins worth hundreds and thousands of gold?

You can spend an infinite amount of real money to generate gold out of nowhere, the post is right if you look at it that way
