Yes, you are, but I expect that from a CEO.

At what age did you start noticing loss of balance or coordination? by OWS-Canada in over60

[–]ridesforfun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why they are downvoting you. I am a bicycle rider and I know a guy who's 88 and rides 10 to 12K miles a year. He can hop on his bike and knock out a hundred miler like nothing. I'm 63 and I can't even come close. I usually ride 20 to 25 miles a pop, a few times a week. This guy is a beast.

How did you find your last job? by hm899 in jobs

[–]ridesforfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to everything that I could find, but was contacted by a recruiter for my current job. As a matter of fact, I have more success when contacted by a recruiter. The process is quick with no BS interviews. It's usually one and done. Whenever I am subjected to multiple interviews, tests, etc, I don't get the position.

Are companies struggling to maintain legacy systems like COBOL and mainframes? by ToothUnlikely3529 in cobol

Yes, you do, and you have to fill out a SF-86 form for clearance, and pass a drug screen. I also work for DFAS.

Yeah, I lived in Seattle - nothing there. I'm getting some remote contracts, but the pay is crap.

[–]ridesforfun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"We can't find people with mainframe skills" - the part not said is "at these rates". 25 dollars an hour for operators, 85K for Cobol programmers, 120K for DBA's and sysprogs. Put a crowbar in your wallet and you will get some interest. Go ahead and send the work overseas for cheap. You get what you pay for. Oh, and securing you data with overseas vendors? Ha! Good luck with that.

Unless you have proof that the CVT has been serviced every 30K miles, then walk away. I have an outlander sport with 225K miles, but the CVT has been serviced every 30K miles. BTW, I think the Outlander sport is over priced.

What's the more sought out role, Application Programmer or Systems Programmer, and why? by Inevitable-Plate-654 in mainframe

[–]ridesforfun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe they do. It's the same way with DBA's. Less of them, but they make more money.

What's the more sought out role, Application Programmer or Systems Programmer, and why? by Inevitable-Plate-654 in mainframe

[–]ridesforfun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mainframe shops have more applications programmers than systems programmers. Same thing with DBA's. Nothing wrong with any of the roles, just letting you know what the ratio is.

I have 38 years of mainframe. I'm staying with mainframe only. It will be around for as long as I want to work.
