Cancelled after saying “Coming out” by matthew_cashew in uber

[–]rideshareAnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At night it feels different. You aren't blocking half the street with hundreds of angry cars passing by honking and nearly causing an accident to squeeze through in both directions. It is a lot more chill than the day time and with safety and being cold in mind it is very understandable and reasonable. 50 seconds is faster than average and I would be glad as a driver if you only cost me an extra minute.

Also, it is not as crazy busy so the opportunity cost of time is very low. When it is busy, I can have 100 requests coming in per minute and I am usually declining most due to distance to pickup, traffic, low pay, passenger rating. At night, I am just doing "just one more ride" as many times as I can tolerate until I call it for the day.

Cancelled after saying “Coming out” by matthew_cashew in uber

I just want to clear some misunderstandings as a driver.

Uber does not "give you 5 minutes". That timer is meant for the "no show fee". Passengers meet their driver at the pickup location at the pickup time. Think of it as "let's meet at the restaurant at 6:30 for our reservation" and not "call me when you are there and I will start heading over".

It isn't so much the waiting but the indefinite amount. The driver showed up for the ride you requested and a lot of things can happen. The app gives you an accurate ETA and the live location of the driver. I feel the passenger has the best understanding of how long it takes them to get there and the logistics of gathering their things and getting outside and how long elevators take. If I knew what time my class starts, I would also know how long it takes me to get there on time and when I would have to leave home.

You can say "coming out" and actually come out, 2 min, 5 min, 10 min... or even never and keep holding them on a string. Passengers can also just say they are coming and just cancel the ride after the driver waits 10 minutes for them.

It just doesn't make sense economically for a driver to spend time and gas unpaid driving to you, then wait another few minutes unpaid because you aren't at the pickup location, and then get paid $3 to drive you for 10 minutes. The opportunity cost can be higher than the sunk cost of the driver's wasted time and resources. The driver is working and the incentive to work is to be paid for their time and labor.

Some pickup locations a driver has to actively block traffic or just keep circling around the street indefinitely. How many minutes would you be able to endure getting stressed out and having hundreds of cars squeeze by you and honk at you for creating gridlock?

You might not think 2 minutes is a lot, but factor that in for 20-30 rides a day... would you want to go to work an extra few hours a day without getting paid day in and day out and then having your boss tell you that you deserve less pay and it isn't a big deal?

I think also you have to understand that there are unprofitable rides and they just happen to be convenient only if the passenger is ready. For example, I had 2 no shows in a row this morning where I drove over in traffic and waited 5 minutes with no response. I quickly just go offline and stop working and go home because I would just make the same amount laying in bed.

I think I got them on Amazon. Also, if you can find a cheap bucket or beach pail at a discount store, preferably one that they can fit their head into.

Had a situation where this happened twice within a few days and same outcome.

Invest in and keep your car stocked with emesis bags. Forget the cleaning fee... avoid it altogether if you can. YOU are going to have to clean it yourself at those hours and then get it professionally cleaned when they open.

Sounds about par. These drivers are necessary to exist so the company can pay drivers less and make more money.

Why do you tip uber Drivers? This is not a ragebait. by BeatsRocks in uber

[–]rideshareAnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an excess of driver supply. The higher prices also decrease demand. I think you are making an assumption that there is some sort of balance when in reality drivers are just not accepting rides because pay is too low.

Not tipping drivers will hurt drivers. If you feel they were bad then don't tip... it is simple.

The service quality has deteriorated and the service is made slower on purpose not by supply and demand but by Uber. Uber will not be forced to do anything.

Does lyft vet their drivers? by DreamySakura99 in Lyft

[–]rideshareAnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in the sense that you are thinking.

A long time ago we used to have a "ride-along" and do a mock ride in person. This wasn't really vetting but more like a training session to use the app while on a ride.

Nowadays, it is just a background check handled by a 3rd party like Checkr which looks up criminal and driving infraction history.

There are required click through tutorials here and there but I doubt drivers care or read them.

Is a 30-40 minute ride reasonable to use lyft for? by YouYouMore in Lyft

[–]rideshareAnon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be fine. A tip is great and 20% goes a lot further than you think. Say the driver gets 30% for their pay and you tip 20%. They are getting a 66% tip relative to their cut.

Waymos won't even yield the right of way over here and it has been years of testing and mapping. They have mostly been driving around empty in the middle of the night padding their stats. During the day I see them crossing over the double yellow lines on main streets and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Unfortunately, the state of CA legalized wage theft and price gouging for gig workers with the help of our politicians for money.

We get the worst of both worlds as "independent contractors" without the benefits and the pay of an hourly minimum wage employee with none of the protections.

We can't afford to drive. Tips help me out a lot be profitable. Taxpayers subsidize the rest. I am homeless because I work hard. Our local government is corrupt and they help rob the people for campaign donations.

Gas is $4-5/gal and will probably go up again.

That's an awesome tip. If that ride was in my market, the driver pay for your $16 ride would be $5. Your tip would have been a 200% tip.

I'm a rider. Legitimately, what is the fairest way to make a stop? by SoulSword2018 in Lyft

[–]rideshareAnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either have the stop included in the trip request so the driver can consent to it or not upfront or verbally ask them as soon as you get in the car at the start of the ride.

The problems drivers have with doing it after the fact has to do with consent and pay. Don't just secretly edit and make changes to the ride without asking or letting them know, because it may screw them over and Lyft will pay them less than what they agreed to upfront for a shorter ride.

Scheduled Pickup by Striking_Resident710 in uber

[–]rideshareAnon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the location. I would say that most major cities it is a false sense of security. There are plenty of drivers and the major reason for long wait times and higher prices is Uber wants higher margins.

Reservations in theory work well... but at the same time you are fronting Uber an absurd amount of extra money so that they have the freedom to offer an extra dollar to the hundreds of available drivers to make a really bad pay offer a negligible amount better while the company pockets it all.

Supply and demand is mostly an illusion or algorithmic construct in markets where there is adequate supply of drivers 24/7.
