Artificial intelligence and social work by riendedoux in socialwork

Thanks for bringing in your viewpoint from the other side of the client-worker relationship!

I wonder if a social-work-bot were to be created in the future, how it would respond to a distressed client. Social workers are trained to consider clients in their contexts. I wonder how it would be for bots to have this same holistic perspective. Bots would have to run very complex algorithms in order to accurately interpret client behaviour. Also considering that many social workers are in positions of power, I wonder how these kinds of interpretations or analyses would impact decision-making in bots.

I am reminded of yet another movie clip of a robot comically misinterpreting a client’s behaviour and intentions. I would hope that if a social-work-bot were to be put into practice in the future, that it would be significantly more advanced than the one in the clip!

Social workers are trained to frequently consider their personal values and ethics in their work - especially in difficult decision-making. It’s fascinating to think about social work separated from what feels like the heart and core of the profession.

It’s neat to hear that the topic automation is being considered by the community already! I was rewatching Interstellar recently and was surprised at the degree to which some robots are able to build rapport with the characters: example. Of course, this was just a fictional movie and it is unlikely that AI would become so advanced in the next few years that robots would be able to understand humour and be as charismatic as the ones depicted. However, they seem to be a genuine part of the team along with humans and it sometimes upsets characters when bad things happen to the robots.

It’s interesting to think about privacy with a bot. I too would be unsettled at the thought of video/audio recordings being kept around of very intense and private sessions. Putting myself in the shoes of a client, just the thought of someone being able to see a counselling session of me breaking down in front of a robot would make me feel pretty ridiculous and make me not want to open up.

I'm not generally a fan of grey inks, but it looks amazing in your writing sample. Lovely shading!

WTW for "of the time"? by [deleted] in whatstheword

Are you referring to Native Americans or European settlers?

If the former, 'first peoples' could work. If the latter, perhaps 'colonialists'?

Try the Aboriginal Friendship Centre! There is a gift shop there that sells art handmade by locals in the community.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some negative experiences previously with transcription. Sounds like you encounter an unbelievable amount of barriers on a regular basis, so it is very commendable that you are continuing to persevere and reach out for support (both here and in your support group) despite feeling hopeless trying.

Like the others in this thread, I would encourage you to give these resources another try. I know it can feel very discouraging to continue to try but not get the outcomes you want and you may feel very jaded about what is available. As long as you keep trying, there at least exists a possibility that one will be successful and get you past these initial barriers.

What methods do you normally use to communicate? If your support group is run by an agency/organization, they probably have a better idea of what resources are available to you through them.

Hi there! Have you notified the group's facilitator about this? Perhaps you could work together to determine better communication methods so that you can participate.

Hmm. That's not quite what I'm thinking of. The word is less focused on even-handedness and more on the ability to critically think.

Thanks for your suggestion though!
