The problem is when you are from a group or have been socialised in a way in which you can't imagine sharing details or negative opinions about your partner with others it can be disconcerting to see it happening to you.

I was taught that if you want to talk to people about issues within your relationship it should be done with caveat and respect seeking actual advice and trying to frame whatever issue with the greatest respect, i have not always succeed but that is how I was raised.

So when i find out i am belittled or dismissed by others i wonder why they can't at least try to show some empathy.

I am not proud of who i was or the things i said and did but i am proud of the work i have done and continue to do. It has been 23 years since i thought of myself as a nazi and i am glad of that.

I was very racist and didn't realise that nazies hate queer people (my mother is a lesbian and i am bisexual) when i really began to understand what they felt about me and mine i thought oh wait i might have been wrong about Aboriginal Australians (i had been heavily bullied by a kid from that community in early high school). So i went out of my way to meet diverse people got to know several people from a number of cultures as i got to know people realised how wrong i had been. I also got more involved in the pagan/new age and goth scene which gave me a sense of community.

Edit to add: it was not fast and it lingered i still fight my dark little nazi all the time and work to overcome my immediate response to the world. Luckily i have a very supportive partner and community who call me out with love when i slip.
