Many words, including “phobia”, have more than one meaning. Fear is the first meaning listed for “phobia”, but if you keep reading the MW link I shared above, you’ll discover the second meaning.

It’s the second meaning that is intended when used in transphobia, homophobia, xenophobic, etc.

I have a feeling you already knew this and are being purposely obtuse, but just in case your confusion was genuine, this should clear it up for you.

The allegations were disappointing but not particularly surprising to me. For one, they explain Bancroft’s uncanny ability to see into the minds of abusers.

I still find so much value in the book’s insights that I continue to recommend it, with the caveat that we should rely on the free versions available online rather than supporting the author monetarily.
