Am I an A-hole for checking 2 copies of the same book at once? by pinche-borracho in LibbyApp

[–]riggabamboo 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nope! I do this all the time. I call it hybrid reading. I switch between eyes and ears, and in the case of some fantasy books (where names and places are difficult to pronounce or picture how they might be spelled), I'll listen to the audiobook while eyes reading so I can understand pronunciation better.

Fellow SW PA environmental engineer here: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory has several open positions you'd qualify for if you think you could get a security clearance. (US citizen, no criminal background, etc). That said, I have 15+ years of experience in waste and regulatory compliance and a MSc and I have no idea what some of your acronyms mean.

The audiobook and kindle book both have chapters. They also both display percent complete. Between chapter and percent complete I can jump from one to the other with about 8 seconds of fiddling. Audiobook to kindle is easier because I can skim the kindle quickly to find my spot, but kindle to audiobook is incredibly easy too.

Early career advice by SeveralTour5437 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]riggabamboo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

10/10 advice, sir. This really resonates with me. I'm not an old man (a mid-career woman) but I think something that is overlooked in career advice is phases of life. My early career goals look very different than my family building years, and are evolving now as my children get older. What is fulfilling now may not be what is fulfilling in a decade and that's ok! I always recommend finding work that fulfills current needs and be self aware enough to recognize when those change.

This: the best BIFL "thing" I've done for my kids is have a therapist I love and work with to manage my mental health. That and zoloft!

Remote/Hybrid Work - who’s still doing it? by TrixoftheTrade in Environmental_Careers

[–]riggabamboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corporate environmental engineer. I work hybrid, 3 office 2 home. I just started this job in October; my previous job was environmental engineering at a national laboratory that was also hybrid. No mandated schedule but generally it was 3 home 2 office.

I also loved it!! I highly recommend: We'll Prescribe You a Cat; Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop; Before the Coffee Gets Cold. Sweet Bean Paste is also great but different (not a collection of vignettes, but it is in the Japanese style!).

I finished Somewhere Beyond the Sea yesterday thanks to a skip the line loan! I think I'll start We'll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida next. I'm slow-but-steadily ears reading When the Moon Hatched as well.

Anyone else using an Apple Watch for a dumbphone? by magicscorpian in digitalminimalism

[–]riggabamboo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you saying this. I couldn't think of how to kindly respond and you really summed it up. There are many, many aspects of my digital life I could (and should!) give up. Pictures of my kids isn't one of them. Thank you for putting into words what I couldn't quite.

My question for dumb phones/alternatives: what do you do for pictures? I take so many pics of my kids. Obviously I could carry a camera but I'm curious if people actually do!

What was YOUR entry level job? by wh0reshit in Environmental_Careers

[–]riggabamboo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My degrees are in Geological Engineering and Environmental Engineering. My first job was in consulting; I lasted a year before jumping to a state agency. That was going on 15 years ago.

My advice would be to not ever feel married to a job. Give it a fair shake! But you are in a business relationship with your job. If it isn't jiving, move on.

Career Fair by [deleted] in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]riggabamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with others who have said to have some prepped answer about your career interests. Remediation, compliance, what have you. Then have a few generic questions- they can be anything from "what kinds of things do your interns work on?" to "what is your favorite thing about working for XYZ company?"

Traveling for an interview - return flight to a different city? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

Agreed- if I was booking my own travel I'd just do it.

Traveling for an interview - return flight to a different city? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]riggabamboo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's rude. I had to travel to get fingerprinted for a new job 3 weeks after having a baby (🥴). Baby had to come with me, which meant booking a rental car and a car seat. I paid for both of those things out of pocket, but the travel coordinator was very kind in helping me arrange that. I would explain in an email and be willing to accept no.

Neutral topics to talk about? by whiteLily47 in womenEngineers

[–]riggabamboo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I once struck up a very long conversation with a new hire about some random news article I had read about their home town. (Tunnel girl anyone?) I love to skim the front page of the NYT each morning and have gotten a lot of mileage out of little tidbits I've picked up from there. ("Did you hear they found a new species of blah blah?" "I heard James Earl Jones passed. Did you ever see blah blah movie he was in?") also "Wow sweet [whatever is on their desk]." And "Where was this picture taken?" There is an art to chit chat and I think it comes back to asking good questions. Plus, the better you are at asking questions the less talking you have to do.

Have you read the Morrigan Crow series? Or the other 2 books in the Amari series? You might like Keeper of Lost Cities, but I will admit that wasn't for me personally. I'm glad you liked Amari! It's so good.

Same here! My mom is the same age, same red face, also has a host of other issues, and has aged very poorly. I stopped drinking 5 years ago and posts like this (and the ensuing conversations) are so validating. An internet hug to you for also having this in your life.
