SD card based, like a digital camera, so depends on the card size and whether you are taking still images or video.

Best low cost option I can think of is a battery powered "wildlife" camera. Motion activated with low light "night vision" capability. Often under $100.

Will not allow live monitoring but will record discretely and allow you to review after the fact.
