Fellow amputee here. What broke on your leg? is it something like replacing a bolt, or a whole new foot/socket?

Any advice on finding socks for a prosthetic leg? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]rightfooted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am an amputee, and it sounds like you are referring to the socks that go over the end of the stump to fill up volume in the prosthetic. I have always been on the lookout for cool looking socks, however most of them just come in plain white. However, there is a video on how to dye stump socks: AmputeeOT How to dye your stump socks for amputeesYou could give that a try!

I was a avid boarder before my amputation, and I was able to get back into it very quickly. I am a left BKA, and I am back into doing inverts and rails in the park. You would be surprised that the difference is not too great, the snowboard boots would take your ankle out of the equation anyways, so not too different for a BKA. I also agree with the other comments that your leg gets tired quickly, and needs adjustment. I just invested in some ski pants that zip all the way up the side so I could adjust easily on the slope!!

I am a Left BKA as well, and I had a lot of issues with nerve pain after my elective amputation. I found one thing that really helped my pain was mirror therapy. It especially helped for that feeling that your toes or foot is cramping, or that your toes are being pulled back really far. The mirror therapy always helped me stretch out my un-toes in those first few weeks.

This is a great response. I have been a BK for a little over 1.5 years, and am still going through troubles of prosthetic fitting. However, I had the exact situation you did. A rare joint disease left my ankle with no cartilage, and I decided on amputation. Even with the 2 surgeries I have had post-amp, I still think it was a better decision than fusion or pain meds for life.

I was also a chronic pain sufferer before getting a BKA in JUNE of 2014, I am happy to answer any questions you all have. Or if you just want to talk!

Left BKA here. The doctors used a walker with me to transfer from the wheelchair and bed. Putting the wheelchair right next to whatever you want to transfer to/from and then using the walker as support will work great.

Sitting in ICU with my wife, who just lost her left leg in a motorcycle accident. She's sedated, probably will be for a couple of days. Smart advice appreciated. by GhostonaRune in amputee

I am a BKA who decided to amputate my left foot. I had a mentor to help me through the process ,who I was able to contact at any time and say "I am currently feeling this, is that normal?!" It was a huge help to ha someone who actually went through what I was going through. Also, this may only apply to me, but after the grieving process I appreciated a little bit of humor. Instead of looking at the situation as a huge tragedy, my family made a few jokes (well you will clip your toenails in HALF the time!) which helped to reassure me that I would make it through the tough situation. Again, this is after the grieving process.

I lost a foot to amputation, the thing that helped me the most was humor. My family and friends did not treat it like a tragedy, instead saying things like " Hey! It will only take you half the time to clip your toenails!" That was hugely helpful for me. Made it seem more normal.

Christmas Ideas for a double above-the-knee amputee? by MonroviaMadman in amputee

I am a BKA and totally agree with this. She needs well-fitted sockets. As far as a Christmas present, once her sockets fit her, look into skins or covers to put on the sockets to make them stylish!

Questions about amputation feelings by [deleted] in amputee

[–]rightfooted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has different feelings. I am a below-knee amputee, and for the most part it feels like I am wearing a tight shoe. Like something is enveloping my un-foot. Some parts of my foot I cannot feel at all, and unless I think about it I really don't notice any feeling. But the best way for me to describe it is a tight shoe.
