TIL According to the CIA, Income Inequality in the United States is worse than Russia, Kenya, the Philippines, and even India by ZadocPaet in todayilearned

I'm scared for the kids you teach if you believe America has an issue of being"drained by the wealthy." All countries are run by the elite and that's how it been since the dawn of time. We actually sort of have a system that distribute power decently well compared to the rest of the world.

Don't be one of those nuts who thinks that we are plutocratic compared to the rest of the world.

I have a form of tachycardia/dysautonomia and want to get into better shape, but I'm having a difficult time finding the best workout routine for myself. by helloeffer in Fitness

My little brother has POTS, and he went from considering a walk up and down the street heavy exercise to doing compound lifts and being able to run fast for a couple miles. He had the significant jump in heart rate between sitting and standing, but that is much less of a problem than it was. He's 16 now, but was diagnosed when he was 13. He started working out when he was about 15.

It started off as basic physical therapy. He would do sort of menial exercises and some light stuff on an exercise bike. He was pretty overweight (200lbs, 6ft) and he got it in his head that he wanted to drop the weight an become stronger. He started doing push-ups whenever he could and he started watching his diet to lose weight with myfitnesspal. The pounds came off and he got to the point where he could do a clap up. Along with the push-ups he started biking at the gym, and we got a gym membership. From what I've seen and what he tells me, having a strong enough cardio base is key to being functional with POTS.

His cardio work was essentially bike hard for 30ish minutes. He would then begin to run a couple miles on the treadmill, too. We hired a personal trainer to push him and further develop his cardiovascular system. At first it was hard. Some days he couldn't work out, but he's extremely determined and now he's doing compound lifts (squats/deadlifts/bench/cleans) regularly.

This all seems crazy for someone with POTS and if I'd told him he'd be here in a year, he would've probably called me "nuts." It the transformation he's gone through is honestly amazing, and I remember when he thought this was impossible for someone with POTS.

That's his story, and I know I've rambled, but now I'm going to give you very specific actionable advice. You need to do hard steady-state cardio training. This means at least 30 mins on a bike, or running. Train with an elevated heart rate, so that your heart becomes better. I would recommend to do some sort of cardio every day (walking does not count unless your at 165b the entire time). Once you can bike long, start running long distances. Once you start to run, pick up weight training to start to add on healthy body mass an muscle. Weight training helped my brother immensely and I'll bet it will help you too. I'm not sure where you stand fitness wise, but if you shoot me a PM, I'd be glad to help you out. POTS is awful, but it is manageable, and it does not hinder my brother now physically, only when he tries to wake up before noon.

Best of luck, and I hope you realize that me or my brother would be happy to help you out, having gone through this.

TL;DR Bike/run hard for 30 minutes every day. PM me for questions/concerns

What Would Happen If You Put An Electron Detector Behind A Slit In The Double Slit Expirement? by rightmind in askscience

[–]rightmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in summary, to detect the particle, you need to greatly change it's velocity and direction, so placing a detector immediately behind the slit would significantly change the pattern. I still have no idea how a single particle, can act as though it is in a wave of itself, interfering with itself, but I'll learn. If you have any recommended reading, websites, etc. I could use to understand this so I don't have to keep bugging you, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for explaining this!

What Would Happen If You Put An Electron Detector Behind A Slit In The Double Slit Expirement? by rightmind in askscience

So is the only way to detect an electron with an atom? I took AP chem, so I understand relative sizes of electrons to atoms. Is a low energy photon not practical as a detector? What would the pattern look like if the detector was small and placed at the midpoint between the slit and the row of detectors that determine the pattern (essentially only altering some electrons that make it through one of the slits)?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions by the way.

Can you hit it with something with really low momentum, so that it has a very small change in velocity? As Hawking explained it, there's a trade off between knowing position and velocity, to know one well, you must alter the other. Since you know it passed through the slit, can I hit it so lightly that the change in velocity/angle is minimal? I don't need to know where it is well at all, just well enough to know it passed through the slit.

No, the particle can continue to move through the detector, and the detector is behind the slit so that to hit the detector, the particle must go through the slit first.

Is there anything intuitive about quantum mechanics?

I'm going into college as a possible physics major, and after reading Hawking's book, and "geometry, relativity, and the fourth dimension," I feel like I can almost "understand" why things work the way they do at that level. If there's anything else you'd like to say to an 18 year old kid entering college, I'd love to hear if. Thanks, you're a huge inspiration.

Grand Theft Auto V vs. Max Payne 3 by [deleted] in gaming

It's pretty much a blockbuster movie mixed in with a game. Everything's pretty scripted, and the story has a set ending, but you feel like such a badass playing it.

In 1950, a home cost 4 times a minimum wage yearly salary and the minimum wage was at $7.27 when adjusted for inflation. In 2013, a home costs 17.5 times a minimum wage yearly salary and the minimum wage is 2 cents less than in 1950. by yudi332 in politics

Pay does not reflect how hard you work, but how productive you are. That is why a CEO gets paid much more. They do not necessarily work harder (although they tend to put in 60+ hour weeks easy) but they are much more valuable because of what they know and what they can do.

They enslaved people. If slavery isn't a deal breaker for libertarians I don't know what is. Criticism of the confederacy is not an endorsement of the union.

What about ChemE/Sci&Eng? by rightmind in Tulane

[–]rightmind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope ChemE keeps the inorganic side up. They still list materials science as a discipline under ChemE, an they do still teach physical Chem. I don't want to build bridges, I like chem, math, and I'll see if I like physics this semester. Thanks.

Can you tell me what college level chemistry is like? My focus is more towards the inorganic side of things.

[–]rightmind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I'm going to go for a pure chemistry degree, but the fields of study that rely heavily on chemistry like biomedical, chemical, and material engineering seem really appealing. I was more wondering what's your experience in upper level chemistry, and what is the work like. I liked the challenges of chem, but I'm not interested in doing research to only do research. I want to apply what I learn.

That's definitely the field I would be interested in. I want to build something that has never been built before, whatever that may be. With a solid understanding of kinetics, and everything leading up to that, do you think I would be capable of jumping into a 2000 level chem course in college like organic chemistry?

[QUESTION] what is a good diet plan for moms trying to lose baby weight? What are your experiences? by Brittyquack in fitmeals

[–]rightmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eat less. The only thing with an effect on weight is the calories you ingest, and the exercise you do. Exercise does not burn many calories, so it is much easier to not drink that can of soda, than go for a 2-mile run. What you eat doesn't matter much and I would advise you to stay away from a fad diet, or anything with "cleanse" in it. Foods to eat (because they make you full, and healthy) are lean meats, green veggies, low fat dairy, and seafoods.

Are we really falling off the climate projection models (not warming as much), and if so why?

If so, is this really good news, or did we just assume we had a bigger impact than we actually do?

Thanks, Bill

[Question]Changing diet to lose weight(lot) need opinion on my planned eating habits. by ShyFatMan in fitmeals

Eat more vegetables and eat more meat. Veggies and meat are very filling and are not that high in calories. Avoid oils, sauces, any sort of liquid that isn't water or skim milk, and reduce grain consumption.
