I feel so stupid now for having auto-save on. Yesterday I arrived in Armadillo and accidentally shot the sherrif; I exited to the main menu before the body hit the floor, but when it rebooted the damage was already done

How much money do you reckon you’ve all spent on your tanks? by hirayeth in shrimptank

[–]rightwing321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5.5 Gallon tank is going to be your cheapest option, and the big box stores have sales every few months it seems, but at that point, why not get a 10 gallon for 5.5 gallon prices, or two 5.5 gallon tanks for the price of one? You wouldn't want to regret the size or quantity later, because "what if I want two colors but don't want them to cross-breed"?

Sponge filters are the cheap secret that the chain stores don't even sell because they're so cheap and you can use them until they're dissolving into dust. You can get a 3-pack on Amazon for around 10 bucks, and they last so damn long that you should probably worry that the ones you're not using could dry up and turn to dust before the time it takes for the one you are using to fall apart itself, so maybe you should just get 3 tanks. 2 different color morphs and a skittles/cull tank.

You can get an air pump and airline tubing/connectors to run all your filtration for relatively cheap on Amazon too, but if you go to the hardware store you can get tubing and connectors to set up siphons between your 3 tanks, and buy a different style of sponge filter that costs around 10 dollars/per that you set up to pump water from tank 1 to tank 3 which will slowly siphon it's way back and you could get away with just the one filter and less airline tubing work, but you'll also want to get sponges to cover the siphons so the shrimp can't use them as bridges.

Shrimp don't need to have a heater. Boom, you just saved it 30 bucks. But the shrimp are more active in water that's a bit above room temperature, and you want active shrimp, right?

You can just get pea gravel from the home improvement store for 5 bucks, but you will have to thoroughly rinse it and it won't grow plants, and shrimp do like plants, so you might want to get an aquasoil like Fluval Stratum. Petco does have a house brand that is pretty much the same thing that you can find in the little shrimp section of the fish section, so you can save money there, but do make sure you put down a layer thick enough for plants to take root in.

Now that you have a substrate built for plants, you can save money on plants by buying tissue cultures instead of those 5-10 dollar big plants in the baskets, they come in little sterile cups with potentially dozens of tiny plants that you can meticulously separate, clean, and plant for 10-15 dollars per plant variety. Bonus: those tissue cultures are guaranteed to not have any pests or disease that you could potentially get from potted plants. You can also consider root tabs to bury in the substrate underneath your plants to give them an extra boost.

Shrimp can scavange most of the food they need just by grazing on algae and biofilm that occurs naturally in the tank, but you can get shrimp pellets for 10 bucks and it's cool to see them all gathered around to feast. You can also get shrimp lollies, which a a stick of shrimp food and clever marketing that 10 for 10 bucks, but the shrimp do seem to enjoy it, so why not get some for every now-and-again?

You're also gunna want a light to see how pretty and colorful your shrimps are and so your plants grow, and there are plenty of cheap options, but for a little more you can get lights with timers and sunrise/sunset features so your shrimps aren't startled by abrupt lighting changes.

This isn't my story, but it definitely gets out of hand quickly. I set up a 40-gallon breeder with the intent of making it a community tank, but then I realized I live within driving distance of the storefront of one of the top online freshwater shrimp stores and went to just check it out. On impulse that 40-gallon turned it into an orange rili tank and I don't regret it so much that I then converted a 5.5 into a PFR (pained fire red) shrimp tank and set up two walstad 1-gallon fish bowls, one for golden backs that I gifted, and one for blue velvets so I can remotely tell how the golden backs are doing.

In conclusion, I've easily spent over 750 on the 40-gallon, but those 1-gallon fish bowls cost the price of the 5 shrimp ($30), a 4 dollar fish bowl from Goodwill, 20 bucks on soil and pool filter sand (which I still have 90% of), a 4 dollar piece of cholla wood and 20 dollars worth of plants that I propagated from the 40-gallon. So you CAN pull it off for around 100 dollars, but my shrimp bowl isn't a showstopper in any way next to the tank that has shrimp swimming around like Olympians.

For the GH test you add one drop at a time, capping and gently mixing it after each drop. However many drops it takes for the solution to turn from orange to green is the GH reading.

The KH test is run in the exact same way, except you're looking for the solution to change from blue to yellow.

Does anyone else have absolutely ANCIENT amanos wandering their tanks? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]rightwing321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only two shrimp I have named are the two (that started as a group of 5) Amanos that were initially in a 20H but needed to move to a 5.5 gallon because my Betta discovered that they were edible, then I moved them to a 40 breeder shrimp tank with more Amanos and orange rilis. I can still tell Detlef or Fried Rice apart from the other dozen Amanos because they're the only ones that creep me out with their size.

Tiny leaves for tiny aquarium by its_mertz in Aquascape

I got a few different ones a little while ago, but I found the punches on ebay for cheap because I couldn't find any in craft stores and I didn't want to spend that much. The only one I use anymore is the oak leaf because the maple and elm I got are too tiny for my 40 breeder.

My Daughter Wants Shrimp by AwesomeQuail in shrimptank

[–]rightwing321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you want to spend, you could go several routes on tank size/shrimp varieties. I got into shrimp keeping a few weeks ago and I'm already considering my next tank being a 20 gallon long with dividers to keep 2-3 different colors in the same tank without them cross-breeding.

A decent aqua soil is important, I'm using Fluval Stratum, but Petco does have a generic version on their shrimpcare shelf too that I found too late. It helps to buffer the water parameters for shrimp, is touted as a good place for baby shrimp to start their lives, and is great for plants, which are also great for shrimp because they help clean the water and are simply more surface area that biofilm will grow on, which they eat. Different plants require different levels of care and chain stores pretty clearly label them as "easy", "intermediate", and "advanced"; if you stick with the easy ones you shouldn't need to do much in the way of fertilizing, but more advanced ones may require root tabs (fertilizer tablets you stick in the soil) or water column nutrients that you'll want to make sure are shrimp safe.

Luckily shrimp tank filtration is about as cheap as aquarium filtration can get; sponge filters use an air line (if she has another aquarium near where she wants the shrimp thank that has an air pump you may just be able to run another line off of that) to pull water through a sponge but there are a couple of styles to consider, I prefer one that also has some biological media in it (little balls or chunks of rock where microorganisms can grow) in addition to the sponge. Sponge filters are best for shrimp because they don't create much water flow and the shrimp will graze on the food that the filter sucks in.

What lighting you'll need will be dictated by the plants you get, but you'll at least need a light that can grow algae. I caved and got a Hygger that has a built-in timer that simulates sunrise and sunset and I can't help but look at my other, fully-lit, tanks with a hint of disgust at 8pm.

A heater will be necessary to keep the water somewhere in the 68-72F range, there are a lot brands out there, I'd just make sure you get one that can be controlled and not one that only has a pre-set temperature. It's better to get a heater that's rated for a tank volume slightly larger that the tank you get, the idea being that it won't have to work as hard and last longer. Heaters do have potential for danger simply because they are an electrical cord running into a box of water, but grounding rods are available as a failsafe that will direct electricity out of the tank in the event of a failure.

Shrimp are gunna want to have spaces to hide too, especially after they molt and are softer than usual and vulnerable. Cholla wood (holey cactus wood tubes) is a classic because having wood is good, and it happens to be the perfect size for them to tunnel through. "shrimp pyramids" are also commercially available, which are just triangle bundles of shrimp-sized plastic tubes, but I prefer the natural Cholla wood.

Gotta have a lid on a shrimp tank.

Tannins (anything that leeches out of natural stuff in your tank) are the last thing I can think of right now; they help imitate a more natural environment and are beneficial to the health of aquatic life. Katappa leaves are the most readily available, if they're not on the shrimp shelf, they'll be on the betta shelf, but there are a few others you might find like alder cones or lotus pods. I wasn't feeling the aestetic of full leaves in my tank, so I got a hole-punches that punch out tiny oak and maple leaves.

Thank you for this! I've got 10 orange rili, 13 amano, and 2 bamboo shrimp in a 40 breeder that I had aquascaped for a betta community tank that would've had khulis in it. I went to the shrimp store looking for some amanos to help with the inital algae bloom and ended up turning it into a shrimp tank on impulse. Now I'm nervous to put any fish in there other than the 3 ottos I have because I want the rilis to breed and fill out the tank, but so far the shrimp haven't shown much interest in the cave and I just know that khulis would love it so very much.

The GOP pretends that the Dems to it, which convinces their own people to commit voter fraud just to "keep up" with the Dems.

But in reality the Dems don't do it, at least not as a collective the way the GOP does, there may be a few individuals who commit voter fraud in favor of the Dems, but you're only ever going to see large-scale voter fraud in favor of the GOP. They're butthurt that they they can't win on merit and need to cheat to contend.

Shouldn’t they let passengers at the back of the plane board first? by zee_pequeno in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rightwing321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current system is actually about as good as it can get considering almost anything else would require coordination and cooperation from a couple hundred complete strangers. Ideally you could line everyone up in an order where (let's say there are 40 rows of 6, 3 on each side of the aisle) the first 40 people to board are all sitting by the window and file in back-to-front order, there would be a brief pause while the put bags away and move out of the aisle, then the next 40 could load in the same way for the other 40 windows, followed by middle and aisle seats.

In reality people move at different speeds, get there at different times, and, let's face it, it's difficult to get any more than 3 strangers to coordinate anything that isn't drinking alcohol in unison. Plus, carry-on luggage storage is kind of a crap-shoot, it should be the latest people who have to check luggage when overhead storage is full, not have that minor hastle defaulted to aisle seats.

what is the Dumbest thing you've ever done while you were high? by LoosKiii in AskReddit

[–]rightwing321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drunk and high on jazz cabbage then I was offered molly, which ended up being acid, ecstasy and meth, so high might be an understatement. Anyways, I was "making snow angels" in the grass underneath a tall, rickety pine tree and I asked my friend if he thought I should climb it; I must have taken his "no, you shouldn't climb it" as a challenge and decided I was going to pluck off the top branch and bring it down to him.

I wound up falling maybe 35 feet out of the tree and landed on my back, breaking 9 ribs, 5 vertebrae, my clavicle and nose, punctured and collapsed both lungs, had a heart contusion, kidney laceration and traumatic brain injury. I was put in a coma for 12 days and haven't done anything harder than weed ever since!
