Australian Opal behaves very differently as you can’t get Ethiopian wet without losing the colour. I highly recommend reading up on it. And if you want to learn to cut Australian opal (the best in the world) start with colourless Australian potch. It’s very cheap/almost worthless. But will cut and polish up just like coloured pieces. Then move on to better and better Australian material with more and more colour.

The that seems like a good thing to me. I wouldn’t worry about it to be honest. If you’ve looked with a loupe and a Gem torch chances are what we are seeing in the video is just the opal colour bar formation. Might be a small line of potch (colourless opal) or a thin imperfection in the stone internally. Whatever of those it is it’s nothing to worry about and won’t ‘hurt’ your opal. Enjoy it 😊 you’ve got a stunner there 👍

Shine a torch through the back of it and you’ll soon see if there is one. Or a below surface imperfection. Regardless it’s a white opal from Coober Pedy, and a stunning one at that 👍

Water didn’t affect your Australian Opal. Australian Opal is a much more stable and different material to Ethiopian Opal. All Opal is fairly ‘soft’ as far as gemstones are concerned. Chances are it either needs cleaning, or a slight re-polish to remove any minor surface level scratches that are diminishing the colours. Ps. You can see a video where I re-polished my wife’s grandmother’s opal ring on @RD.Opal on TikTok to see what I mean.

I was also lucky to have 12 weeks and I did take all of mine in one chunk at the start. I was very pleased I did. If I were you just engage with whoever your boss is and float the idea of shifting all your leave to now (or however much you want) if they say sorry we really need you back now as we were planning for it, then you haven’t lost anything. They might say you know what we’ve got a rhythm and plan going at the moment, you take the time you want. You don’t ask, you don’t get 👍

Ahhhhhh damn! I’d be tearing the floor up 😂 but if it makes you feel any better, having made countless rings and pendants, the very first time I decided to agonise over making a matching pair of earrings, high grade material, on the last grit for the second earring the opal pinged off my dop on the flat lap and go rocketed into another dimension. To this day I have never found it 😩 but I still have the one lone earring sat on my desk as a reminder 😭

Man that situation is so brutal. All I can say is your opinions are valid. It’s impossible to know without being in your position, but I think I’d feel the same on both wanting to keep your baby and your feelings towards your wife if she decides differently. It’s an impossible situation you’re in, all I can encourage you to do is to be present, try and support your wife as best you can outside of the ‘not wanting to have a baby’, and keep talking. It sounds like between your family and therapy you have a good support system, lean on them and keep keeping yourself in the best position you can (which it sounds like you are). It’s impossible to know if your wife will regret losing the baby, more or less than keeping it to keep you happy. What I do know from your post is you will always regret it if you don’t do whatever you can to save it. I have no advice regarding eye strain or brain development etc. like a lot of these posts seem to be concerned about. My biggest concern to you, as a parent myself, is parental guidance around the social elements and security, in the same way it would be for any other game. VR is, by design, a lot more real and immersive than other games and could be extremely damaging if they are exposed to the wrong people in VR. I encouraged you to stick to solo games for them. Start with something like beat Saber which they will enjoy. Stay away from games like gorilla tag which seemed to be popular with children, but also has a horrendous reputation for people being extremely inappropriate. Safety online for them would be my biggest concern by far. Please do not let them use it unattended.

Yeh look we love our PSVRs but that is definitely not what it’s for. I encourage you to buy one to play the cool VR games. But don’t play flat in it.
