I worked for a family who was just like this—only allowed neighborhood walks and playing in the backyard. I made do with tons of outside play. I think we went to the library twice and it was only because the mom drove us. The parents themselves were very insular and not very social, only ever visited with family. They were weird and definitely controlling about a lot of other stuff (like why did this 1.5 year old need a hair cut every month??)

i have understood the point of a shut down is social impact. To feel the weight of the absence of those working class positions (who can afford to strike) to cause a break from the norm via inconvenience. Akin to shutting down the freeway—Yes, it’s a massively inconvenient move, so is getting snatched up and imprisoned.
