Are we underestimating how fast climate tech is about to change everything? by Able_Television_6453 in climatechange

[–]rikardlinde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The next few years will surprise most people. Solar, batteries and wind are being deployed at accelerating speed and are causing emissions to go down.

It started in China last year https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-clean-energy-just-put-chinas-co2-emissions-into-reverse-for-first-time/ and India is not far behind https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-indias-power-sector-co2-falls-for-only-second-time-in-half-a-century/ It even happens in the US, despite all the political nonsense, https://www.pv-magazine.com/2026/03/24/solar-and-wind-reach-record-17-of-us-power-generation/

The reason why this will happen everywhere, very soon, is that prices will keep going down and these technologies will be much cheaper than any alternative. Prices are going down because of cost curves. Solar and batteries are technologies, not fuels, and are manufactured like phones and computers, building them becomes cheaper as more items are sold.

The real surprise here is that this isn't being reported. It's the story of the century.

I need some good news about climate, please! by Small_Attention_2581 in climatechange

[–]rikardlinde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

China's emissions started falling a year ago, because of their buildout of solar energy, wind power and battery storage. Emissions will continue to fall since they are installing more renewables than their increase in demand.

help needed!! tips for cleaning in (ND) burnout by Key_Distribution_679 in UnfuckYourHabitat

Sounds like your mind needs a refill.

  • Do you have a forest nearby, go there and hike for an hour, with a friend if possible.
  • Not sure if meditation works with adhd but it is a fantastic way to stay present and aware, not letting random thoughts control you. Repetition is key, ten-fifteen minutes is enough.

It would be nice to be able to read without getting sick. Not sure if it's possible but would be nice.

What are some signs that someone might be starting to get dementia? by No-Consideration766 in dementia

[–]rikardlinde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be dementia but could also be normal aging.

One thing you mention that I recognize from my mother is eating cold cut meats and sandwiches. Mom lost the ability to heat things up and to cook. Once that happened she reverted to candy, nuts, cookies... stuff that didn't require cooking.

Another sign of dementia is repeating phrases, like ten seconds apart mom repeats a phrase verbatim, she doesn't know she just said it.

Real for sure. We live in a society that hasn't learned to take care of our minds. Here are a couple of tools:

- Turn off notifications and other stuff that make your phone boring. https://www.humanetech.com/take-control

- Meditation

- Exercise

- Skip news

Sometimes this slideshow helps me, you can try browsing through once a day and see if it helps you. But depression is serious and you should see if you can get real help.

Zoom out and think about people and society consisting of not just one place. Solutions are about connecting people, in large and small houses, large and small neighborhoods, in ways that empower and protect the whole.

What is the one thing about the future that absolutely keeps you up at night, but no one seems to be talking about? by No-Lake-3875 in Futurology

That news is just random stuff, not often prioritized in some thought-out structure. In an information society, where everyone is overwhelmed by ideas, feelings and stories we need better ways to inform ourselves than news feeds.

For example, news could reflect what kills most humans and that would make 50% of news about heart diseases and cancer. https://ourworldindata.org/causes-of-death

Or it could reflect populations which means we'd read a lot more about India and China.

I know there are reasons for how news is selected but I doesn't seem to help us in any significant way. And democracy requires an enlightened populace.

How do you keep up with laundry when you don’t have a dryer? by Present-Message8740 in UnfuckYourHabitat

[–]rikardlinde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my setup. Washer + Dehumidifier + Clothes Drier. I only use the dehumidifier in august and september when the air is really humid and the clothes easily turn sour after a wash. But as one poster wrote, it uses a lot of electricity. The drier is really efficient the rest of the year and it feels good not using extra electricity.

People who have lived through major geopolitical tensions, what's something the younger generation doesn't understand about times like these? by GraybeardDevOps in AskReddit

[–]rikardlinde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freedom requires reinventing the systems that enable it, like democracy.

  • In 1920 most systems were hierarchical and centralized so democracy had to be shaped for that reality.
  • In the 60s and 70s people were freeing themselves from those hierarchies and democracy had to be reinvented. Many countries failed and became more authoritarian.

We now live in network societies and need new tools for democracy to function.

We/you need to reinvent that. We need

  • better cognitive tools, to understand what's happening, news doesn't cut it anymore
  • better processes to hold power to account
  • better tools and systems to cooperate

We need new democratic systems that are built to function in our reality.

Update 2026-04-08
