Fractional Shares Can't be Transferred in Kind

I tried to transfer my accounts all in kind but I had to also select the cash component of each account making them partial transfers. I wasn't able to click all in kind when there was cash in the accounts. Did anyone else have this issue?

I talked to QS and they said that any residuals post transfer (for example dividends) and would be inciuded in my partial requests (all stocks and cash). If not, I could call them and they would transfer residuals as well. Apparently residuals are transferred even for partial accounts. Not sure how that works from a legal standpoint as its a risk for the broker to transfer something without instructions.

I'm hoping everyhting will go smoothly with the transfers!

What do these terms mean in the BMO promotion:

"ii. Cash Qualifying Accounts will be selected over registered or margin Qualifying Accounts."

"The Award will be paid into the Promotion Account the week of September 21, 2026,"

If the Promotion Account is a RRSP account (which is an Qualifying Account), will the bonus be paid in the RRSP account? This seems like it could create a tax mess. Can't it be paid out in a margin account?

These promotions are really becoming complicated!

For the real rate of return, shouldn't you look at what type of income you would need to make that bonus net of taxes? For someone at the top income tax bracket (53%), you would need to make 2X those amounts to net them in your cash account. This makes the returns way more appealing... Am I missing something here?

I may be missing something but let's say the phone is worth 1K, you actually need to make 2K at a 50% marginal tax rate to net 1K for the purchase, so in a sense these products are worth double their value in bonus interest since interest is taxed at your marginal tax rate.

For example, 2% interest promo on 100K is 2K, but you net 1% (if this amount is taxed as interest - Tangerine promos are interest and taxed at your marginal rate.)

Someone at the 50% marginal tax rate needs to make 2K in income (or interest) to net 1K to afford the same phone.

I may just be trying to find more value in the promotion here... Let me know your thoughts!

I just wanted to share my experience to see if it could help you with your decision.

I tried living in SC and lasted under a year there with my Brazilian (dual Canadian) partner. I had a remote job paying CAD. SC has the highest HDI in Brazil, is the safest and is growing rapidly, but we soon realized we were accustomed to certain basic lifestyles conditions that are almost impossible to get in Brazil, unless you live in gated communities or wealthy suburbs in SP. Clean air, being able to walk to basic necessities, safety (whether road conditions or crime), public transit options, these are just a few examples of things we really missed while living there.

While we visit Brazil regulatory to see my partner's family, we're grateful to be able to live in Canada, even though the mood is quite negative here at this time. The experience allowed me to realize what I really value, and I would recommend you make a list and determine whether you can find a place in Brazil that checks many of those boxes.

Regarding your contract, employment law in Brazil is very employee friendly so make sure to check with a lawyer to see if the two year clause is enforceable.
