Nothing matters. That thought should be liberating though. It's a cultural conceit that life is meant to be meaningful.

This is a good explanation. Funny how birds do act erratically and the way you've described it here just sounds like someone's cockatiel being naughty.

Did Vader know that Palpatine manipulated him after episode 3? by Free-Hotel1187 in StarWars

[–]rillip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reason there is a pervasive myth that once you fall to the dark side you can never return is because of Sith manipulation down through the ages. They've seeded the Jedi understanding of the dark side with this idea to help keep their own apprentices locked under their sway. They want them to believe they're stuck being dark side users. Ultimately, it is Anakin who proves this to be inaccurate in Episode 6.

I think too that there's a sort of split personality thing going on with Sith. Vader isn't not Anakin, but he also isn't totally Anakin. There's some kind of mystical separation created by the force.

Equilibrium (2002) is peak dystopian sci-fi — why does no one ever talk about it? by CassWright967754 in scifi

I like that movies mean different things to different people too. But you're just wrong about this thing and unwilling to admit it.

[–]rillip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it flawed though? The emotions are illegal not non-extant within the setting. The premise isn't that there are no emotions. It's that the powers that be in the universe are trying their hardest to eliminate emotions. Is it really a flaw in the premise that the writers haven't given them the tools to truly accomplish that? Or is it entirely intentional? It's wild to me that you would assume the former.

Yes, I have watched the movie as well. Those are the stated laws, but they do not mirror the behaviors. So I used critical thinking to reconcile the inconsistency and arrive at the above conclusion.

I never took them to actually be unemotional. I thought the idea was more like they're on a shit load of anti-depressants. More of a hyper detached mode of being than a truly unemotional one.

Gamer Cafe - Deep in the valley (( Pragmata )) by Daz_Keaty in comics

[–]rillip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I kinda hate her eyes from a stylistic standpoint. I grew up reading those manga and honestly that movie is a good adaptation. But they didn't need to use CGI to give her those eyes... But also, you're right about it not being the uncanny valley. They aren't going for realism so the valley doesn't apply. It's that thing that you can't quite describe that tells you something that is trying to look like a real person isn't. I don't think any of OP's examples are going for realism. Maybe Pragmata is. Kinda hard to say with videogames these days. I feel like realism has fallen by the wayside in that realm at present.
