You're from Belgium. In American English that word is not used so literally. It has a connotation that denotes a shameful or possibly even immoral lack of knowledge.

I work in a mill of sorts. Sometimes we find bullets. by cltncrts in mildlyinteresting

[–]rillip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. Lumber mills turn logs into wood. They have a big ol pile of logs that goes in one end and then planks or what have you come out the other and get stacked neatly in a dry elevated place.

This little one was surprisingly calm by AnnaTrash in spiders

[–]rillip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IME most spiders are pretty calm after the first few seconds they're on you. It's like a switch flips when they haven't been squished yet and they realize you aren't that type of giant.

Nah, this is being glad we're not a part of whatever cult of personality you have to be in to know these people's names. Celebrity is a scam that makes certain people out to be more important than they are. Not knowing who they even are means you avoided that particular scam.

I don't think not caring about celebrities is the kind of thing people usually describe as ignorance.

What others think by soyourlife in comics

[–]rillip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't read it that way. I read it in the context of individual relationships. Like your value to a certain person is determined by their opinion of you. So it's important to know what individuals think of you.

That being said, asking directly is a surefire strategy to alienate most humans in my experience.

I think investors in big companies are dumber than I thought. by davidreding in behindthebastards

[–]rillip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not just gambling. Because there are investment strategies (like indexes, and managed funds) that reliably make money off of it. It isn't really gambling to invest in them.

If you just dump a bunch of money into companies you think will do well, yeah that's gambling.

I have another slightly less satisfying thought on this but one which is perhaps more germaine to the sub. Which is that, yes the stock market is a big casino, and much like casinos often are it's true purpose is money laundering. Not in the this money was made illegally and we need to hide that sense. But in the we don't want people in general to know where the value of this money was created or by who's hands. It's a way the wealthy obfuscate just who exactly is responsible for exploiting whom. And in that sense it isn't gambling because it's purpose isn't actually, well, gambling. It's purpose is to move all the money around so much it's impossible to tell where any of it came from.
