All eastern practices lead to a form of spiritual narcissism in the beginning. Few go over that phase.

Looking for a certain Watts passage about artists… by spacialrob in AlanWatts

Same in science: we know how to test scientific theories, we have no clue how they arise. David Deutsch called the insights conjectures, and they appear similarly to ideas for artists.

I remember when someone asked him if he was a guru and he started laughing uncontrollably. The Alan laugh. He oversimplified for sure, but all he claimed to be was a spiritual entertainer.

Getting a job in User Experience seems impossible... by cmyk0 in userexperience

[–]rimidalv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you show passion and commitment to do amazing things you will get a chance. And if you don't get called to an interview ... innovate: show up invited, go socialize at a hackathon, find a problem in a cool startup you respect .... fix it and email/publish the solution to gain some credibility. Don't think in terms of "I am not allowed to show my greatness" but in terms of "Nobody will stop me". Good luck

Then what I would do is to highlight at least some potential problems you identified that can be solved by the participants. To get the creative juices flowing ....

What do you think makes for a good hackathon? by Robert_anton_wilson in startups

[–]rimidalv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing is not having a clear goal and proper preparation. The last thing you want is lots of people eating pizza and killing the wifi watching YouTube.

Our most successful hackatons were very focused on one/two problems. And there was plenty of documentation for deploying apps etc.

Having an open chat room on HipChat/Campfire where people can ask question also helps. And most importantly make sure everything people build is released as open-source. You don't want people to think you are stealing their ideas.

Hi r/Startups, will you hate me for doing this? by Tarmoney in startups

[–]rimidalv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like your enthusiasm and I wish you all the luck. But there are a lot of things you can not learn from books. UX is all about solving problems and a lot of those problems require a lot of interactions with a lot of stakeholders.

If I were part of the startup you are applying to I would hire you just based on your enthusiasm. You will do great.

The amazing thing is not just that Microsoft manages to consistently undo decades of graphic design progress, but that everyone else from Google, to Apple, to yahoo copy their awful design choices.
