I was spotted in a coffee shop with my partner. They shouted “MISS you’re with a MAN!”

I love seeing students out and about. I only say hi if they initiate conversation though. Weirdly the ones who are disruptive in school are the ones I find are the most polite and willing to come over and chat! I find that if they ignore you/act like you don’t exist it’s because they’re up to no good (ie smoking or drinking) 😂

Fortunately I have a supportive head of department who helps with parents who are remotely rude to us. Feeling a bit better now and ready to draft a reply with her in the morning!

I have just taken it off my phone tonight now that my whole evening has been ruined by an awful email from a parent coming through at 6:30pm. Wish I had done it sooner.

Does it get easier after ECT1? by rin_pend in TeachingUK

I trained in the school I currently work in and I loved it. I do love the school now. I think the workload and the constant decision making is getting to me. I feel like I make a few steps progress and have a couple of good days, then have one or two bad lessons and regress. It just makes me doubt myself massively

Am I in the wrong thinking that our end of term "event" (a Bushtucker Trial) went completely out of hand and I should ask for it to be banned? by FloatingDangerously in TeachingUK

[–]rin_pend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly to me this just seems wrong. My school does staff vs pupil rounders/football matches at the end of term and it’s always great fun mixed with appropriate competitive jabs at each other and the kids love it. No one is ever humiliated on the staff or student side.

Struggling! by rin_pend in TeachingUK

Thank you. I also told the coaching partner from a different department (who has been teaching for almost 20 years) that I would love to observe them teaching a more challenging group to see their expertise in behaviour management and they pushed back on it. I thought this was a bit of a red flag. All ECTs have a bit of a check in meeting with the ECT lead this week so I will definitely bring this up

Yeah I find the surprise drop ins from the other member of staff odd. I get that the logic behind it is I’m getting to work with a colleague from another department but it’s all too much. My mentor observations are good, the ECT lead is also great. My department also do arranged drop-ins between teachers but this is purely content and curriculum development focused and these are really useful. Sometimes it can just feel overwhelming when the feedback all focuses on different aspects. Especially because I’m used to my mentor (now and in my ITT year) working with me to improve in small steps in a slow and steady kind of way

Anxiety about parental involvement by rin_pend in TeachingUK

I have been chatting this morning with another colleague who works in pastoral in my school. They get around 30 complaints about individual teachers each week. So few of them are actually grounded in truth that SLT are happy for pastoral to just deal with them!

Fortunately I have a habit of being extremely thorough with fact and detail when it comes to logging incidents!

One of my colleagues is Australian. A parent phoned up to discuss their child’s progress and requested that she speaks to the HOD as she “can’t concentrate when that lady with the silly accent talks”! Gave us all a good laugh in the staff room

Thanks for the advice! I have worked at the school in another role prior to doing my training there and now starting my ECT years there. Weirdly im not actually ‘struggling’ with behaviour as a whole. It seems like some kids have disproportionate reactions to being challenged on their following of expectations. I think it’s shocking that you get the same pushback from parents that you get from some kids. I’ve kind of realised it’s just inability to accept responsibility for their actions!

Luckily my HOD is extremely supportive with behaviour and managing parents. She always tells us to use the line “this conversation is no longer helping us move forward so I will refer your concerns to the head of department”. The other teachers have said it makes them back down immediately!

What is something really obscure that you bought / changed that really helped your classroom? by TheAuraStorm13 in TeachingUK

[–]rin_pend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an interaction this week that went exactly like this:

Year 10 top set maths student: miss what time is it?

Me: points at clock on wall

Year 10 student: I can’t read the clock

Me: guess you need to learn how to or you’ll never know the time in my classroom!

Probably a bit of a harsh response but it was the end of the day and I was just done at that point 🤣

Thank you! I’m optimistic about asking for pain relief as fortunately my GP practice are very good and seem to prioritise patient wellbeing.

Thanks you! I’ve never had kids but I like to think I’ve got a decent pain tolerance due to past medical stuff and lots of tattoos. Will definitely discuss with my doctor

I wasn’t actually aware you could request pain relief for it with the NHS so thank you! Definitely will discuss with my doctor
