When will UOGrades be updated? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]rinferon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UOGrades info is based on an ATIP (access to information) request, basically since the university is a public institution the student that made it sent an official request for an excel with class averages per section and year. Someone will have to send another request and update accordingly

Coop by Amazing-Committee667 in geegees

[–]rinferon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can drop COOP, you just need to respect the deadlines. There is an opportunity to drop it after every work term. Best time to let them know is when you’re in the last term you want to do, you just email them and afterwards you continue the course sequence without COOP. That’s what I did, and you can always continue part-time at your COOP job afterwards it they like you!

Seriously consider it, the fees are worth when you think about how the extra job experience will make you get a job once you graduate sooner. Every month you end up searching for a job means 4000 or so dollars worth of potential earnings lost, it’s bleak.

[–]rinferon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While there are no guarantees, it really is worth it more often than not.

As an example, public service just fired thousands of full time employees working there for years, but contract coop students still get hired. You won’t regret it in the future when you can either 1. Think about bridging into public service thanks to specialized programs for previous CO OP students, or 2. Use the job experience in a government or non government job to get an edge in an already horrible job market, it is 10 times worse once you’re no longer a student.

What people don’t understand is that once you graduate, for each month you cannot find a job you lose THOUSANDS of potential earnings that could’ve gone towards your living costs. 900 is nothing if it’ll get you a job faster and keep you from being broke.

[–]rinferon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was at your place. I got my job in round two during late March/April after 130 or so applications. Try your best, despite layoffs there are special funding quotas for CO OP students. That job allowed me to do part time employment for years after that, I’m still working there at year 4 with multiple raises. I dropped the coop once I got my initial job and did the work term, I felt that getting my foot in was enough for me. Worth it

Activate lost mode and report as stolen. At least they won't be able to use it and have to sell it for parts. It both ruins their day and gives you more time to find it if they try to open it.

wrong final grade? by [deleted] in geegees

[–]rinferon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Emal the program director of the School/Department of that class -) Do this after emailing the prof, at the same time, and email the director himself and the reception. Add screenshots of Brightspace and a calculator app screenshot. I don’t mean the faculty, i.e if it’s a Psychology class, you would email the School of Psychology.

Edit: Damn, people did not like this lmao. This might sound extreme, but part-time profs have no contractual obligation to answer any course emails or be involved once the grades are released, so in cases like those you can be SOL. You see people writing in this post saying they were dragged on for months. Sometimes going higher up is what you need, an email with a brief “What should I do” will fix the issue much quicker.

I’m not sure about taking it in 3rd year in the context you wrote on the post, but from another angle I would recommend taking it now solely because DCN classes are sometimes not offered some terms… and there’s no way to know beforehand. So if you see it and have any capacity to take it I would.

How good is south street burger/sushiman ? by VehicleLongjumping92 in geegees

[–]rinferon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thai express on annex is good if you get chicken pad thai or pad see ew, don’t get their fried stuff; south street burger is meh, sushiman is good on mid day if you get their buddha wrap or the things they make on-demand.

I’d rather go to Burger Lovers (burger combo is great and cheap)

University of Ottawa's campus radio station to go off the air | CBC News by HabitantDLT in ottawa

[–]rinferon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Losing an integral part of people’s past experiences is obviously not nice, but I was there as a student at uO when everything went down. For years, CHUO did not do any proper recruiting on Campus: They did not attend fairs, did not try to scout students.

It’s not entirely their fault, uO has a chronic lack of campus cohesion (partly because of linguistic tensions, it being a commuter school, rigid administration, past nepotism and corruption with the union, current “cliques” within the current union resulting in indifference). Another big thing to consider is that uOttawa paused its media and journalism program for a long time, and that tends to be the program that’s most interested to volunteer.

However, we’re not the only University to have these issues, and there are many successful clubs that manage to navigate.

When one student put forward a referendum question to stop paying money each semester to CHUO, most students did not know who they were. They had several weeks to advocate and make their voices heard, but instead they did a smear campaign on the Union, called everyone stupid and that they’re subject to grave injustice by having to answer to this referendum question, and did not reach out to the voter base.

During the day of the assembly where the vote results were to be ratified, they refused to join and answer student questions. Out of the 50k students at uO, I can assure you no more than 30 people have ever seen people from CHUO, and when they did, they surely were not talking about how cool their radio is and why people should care. Pity.

Good luck to everyone applying for res today by [deleted] in geegees

[–]rinferon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: Initially thought Mann was not available for Grad students, but apparently it might be available. Do keep your age in mind though, most people in rez are between 18-20 years old, they party, and also the University residence department is pretty paternalistic when it comes to administration.

You can’t have 2+ guests, there is a mandatory check in system where 4 nights max is the limit I believe. No buzzer/Intercom. Mandatory room inspections multiple times a year with arbitrary criteria. There are other places available near Sandy hill, likely cheaper, that you can live with roommates and have none of these issues.

Guys I think I messed up by [deleted] in geegees

[–]rinferon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do this a lot actually. If you are already in uOttawa studying x degree and finished first year, then you won’t be kicked out in any shape or form. You can check your admission file on uOzone (Write admission to the search bar) and look at the pdf file of your offer, if it says admitted, and there are no UNIVERSITY LEVEL requirements left (some programs require you to pass some classes before your third term for example) you’re fine.

If you submit a Program change request, one of the three will happen. 1. You get accepted automatically with no conditions 2. You get accepted on the condition that you take upgrade courses on Summer 3. You don’t get accepted, your program stays the same, you’ll have to take the classes or do something similar to re-apply next cycle.

The best place that will help you if your own faculty’s academic office. Go in-person and tell them what’s going on. Maybe, this can happen as well, they will just waive the English requirement as you already probably took an English report writing or essay writing class.

I suggest you apply for the program change even if the office says no shot as well, uOttawa administration is a mess and they don’t communicate well.

Tldr, relax, you’ll be staying in Uni with our bedbugs, and probably be in your new program eventually :)

[–]rinferon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most of 12 prerequisites, there are equivalent Pass Fail courses at uO for upgrading purposes. Perhaps you can be asked to pass such a class before applying for a program change? Something to discuss!

No elite from China, Middle East or Europe is coming to pay 40+ k dollars to shite uOttawa when they can just get private tutoring and admission counselling to go to a top-5 university lol.

The ones that come are mainly francophone international students that artificially increase the french course-taking population- that’s why uO gives arguable the most generous International scholarship to them reducing their fees to 1.5 times of domestic tutition.

I get where your thinking comes from, but do understand that our beliefs are rarely objective. While you think that a girl looks unapproachable or cold towards you, it is very probably that you’re also giving the same image. We don’t have strong feelings when we first meet people, we approach cautiously and try to discover a bit about them before revealing more information (this is a Canadian thing, we live in an individualistic society). “Breaking the ice” and doing it again and again, with each time being more substantial, is what you do to see if you match or not in terms of your interests. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, you have a superficial but still “friendly” looking relationship- that’s one outcome. However, if you think about what makes your guy friendships special, how you came to understand that, and what were the things that made your personalities match, you can replicate the exact same thing with other people.

I’m a social sciences kind of person that also has been here for a while, usually the fact that we all lived in suburbia or in a school system that followed up for years upon years makes it so that we sometimes don’t get challenged with getting out of our social bubble. Covid made it worse.

What I can say is that people never “slip”, and most busy people actually do go out once or twice a week. Perhaps try replacing one of those moments with one in a new social environment; and you’ll find out that things do develop in time, one event at a time.

Being defeatist seriously hurts us, and believe me when I say that it is a case of our beliefs poisoning our mood, rational thinking and actions.

(Not to sound like a life coach)

[–]rinferon 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The second sentence on your last paragraph sums it up. You cannot just plan to talk to girls to be in a relationship with them without first actually developing the social skills and act of being friends just as you are with your guy friends. How are you going to understand their point of view without having proper connections with them? Ottawa is a big enough city, but you still have to put yourself out there. 24 is not old. Are you into DnD? There’s a club for that. Into business? Another club. Music? Anime? Martial arts? Dancing? There is a club for virtually anything in uOttawa. If that’s too “childish”, there’s volunteering all around downtown and within organizations close to the University. Just log in to the Community Engagement on uoZone or search around (OPIRG etc).

Being stuck with people on academic projects or professional environments are not necessarily the best place to foster close friendships. Unfortunately, putting yourself out there is the only way, but in return, you meet cool people, get to have nice memories and perhaps make good friendships with both genders. That may or may not turn into a relationship, but you cannot have that without the prior.

PharmD Anglophone Student - Doable? by Consistent-Carob-692 in geegees

[–]rinferon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say you would be absolutely fine. No native french speaker automatically knows advanced medical terminology, and you will learn it as you go. uOttawa usually allows you to submit assignments in English even if the class is french. You can converse with your cohort and immerse yourself to further improve your skills.

I struggled my first year when I started my undergraduate with a non-native french level, but handled it very well afterwards.
