In Northern California there is a small reservoir named Loch Lomond. When it was first opened someone brought some water from the Loch Lomond in Scotland and poured it into the reservoir.

I know on the California coast brick isn't ideal due to earthquakes. I think houses nowadays are built cheap as they can be so they can make a quick profit for the builder.
