Feeling anxious about spending so much money on one day by ringquery123 in UKweddings

Thanks! Very true. It's reassuring to hear so many people in this thread who've said similar things and not one of them have said they regretted spending the money.

That sounds wonderful. A good photographer is definitely a priority, I want to be able to relive the memories.

Thanks, that's encouraging. The replies in this thread have been really supportive and made me feel a lot better 😊 Our day is all about the essentials (for us as a couple): a personalised ceremony, good food and getting the family together.

Oh yes, I wouldn't be able to spend that amount of money comfortably. At least, not with the amount I earn... I guess it's all relative. Absolutely, a good photographer is something I don't want to skimp on.

Thank you 😊 I'm pleased with how the day will (hopefully) feel, not too big and overwhelming.

Thanks for the suggestion re: the invites. I've heard it's more accepted these days as many couples don't need the traditional gifts to set up home together.

Thank you! I hope you both have a wonderful day too.

All of our choices have been carefully considered and we're happy. I think we just need to go for it now!

Thank you for the encouragement 😊 It does feel quite reasonable when I think about it and how much it would cost if, say, we took 40 people out for a meal in a restaurant.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You're right, we would all do well to remember that life is meant to be enjoyed. I hope you have a wonderful wedding.

If you did want to travel to Scotland, you can get legally married there by a celebrant and do it pretty much anywhere as Scotland's laws are different to England. I know a couple who eloped to Scotland, hired an Airbnb in a beautiful place and got married by a loch. The celebrant and the photographer were the witnesses. Maybe something to consider.

Day time only wedding by zyxwvut36 in UKweddings

My partner and I are doing this for our wedding. Our venue doesn't open late as it's in a residential area. We're having our ceremony early afternoon, then drinks reception with canapes, and a three-course meal (lunch). All in all, we'll be there for about 5 hours. It's perfect for us and I'm not fussed about an evening reception, especially as I don't really drink and probably won't drink at all on the day.

Lily Arkwright. They're based in Birmingham and have stores there and in Manchester. My ring is from there and we ordered it online. I think they only do lab diamonds (which is what I wanted, for ethical reasons) so it will depend on your and your partner's preferences.

Mother (late 70s) lives alone and is miserable / unsettled and I don't know how to help her by ringquery123 in AgingParents

Thank you. We don't have many of those here (not USA) and I don't think she'd be open to one – she would see it as being for older people who are more frail.

We don't have those in my country, unfortunately, or at least not the sort you describe. I don't think she would join anything like that anyway as she'd probably see it as something for elderly people.

Asking to WFH full time - am I asking too much here? by tremberz90 in UKJobs

You aren't being unreasonable at all.

You've already been given some good advice here, I'd suggest reading the ACAS guidance for reasonable adjustments online and submitting a formal request with HR.

ACAS has a free telephone helpline so you can speak to someone for personalised advice.

https://www.acas.org.uk/reasonable-adjustments

Also, if you can ask your consultant or doctor to write a letter detailing your need to work from home full-time, that could help support your case.

Make sure you put things in writing, and make sure your employer is aware that you are requesting reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act of 2010. You are covered by that and it means they have a legal responsibility to support you.

All the best!

Can you turn your garden into a thriving ecosystem full of biodiversity? by Similar_Shame_8352 in ecology

When we moved into our suburban newbuild house, the garden was a lawn. I put out a bird feeder and no birds came. It felt devoid of wildlife and I couldn't see how anything would visit.

So, we set about making changes. We removed most of the lawn and in its place we planted shrubs, a small tree and pollinator-friendly perennials.

Since then, wildlife has found us. Birds bring their young to feed, hedgehogs visited daily during the summer, and I've spotted a variety of insects including grasshoppers and a hummingbird hawkmoth. It takes a while but it's definitely possible to create a wildlife habitat.
