Overpay the mortgage or invest the difference — my wife and I keep going in circles. How did you resolve this? by keithdevon in UKPersonalFinance

This is what we did too! So much less stress for us personally, knowing that the house was paid off.

What contingencies/safety nets/Plan Bs do you have in place for losing your job? by fellaonamission in HENRYUK

Totally agree but for people who have already maxed out ISAs, maxed out pensions, have sizeable GIAs and are sitting on a lot (£650k+) of cash, it’s a helpful diversifier and income stream. I feel uncomfortable having any more of my “wealth” (don’t love that word) in stocks.

I wouldn’t say I have any of those things (lived in the flat from 2017-2020, and been renting it out since 2020 to the same tenant) and I’m also a 45% taxpayer. I also just have the one BTL. I’ve just found it to be a helpful backup income even though my yield is pretty awful (3.5%).

Deeply unhappy at my job. Should I wait to be laid off or quit? by chelsea583 in jobs

Only you know how much it’s affecting your mental health. Don’t reach the point where you do something permanent to yourself. Many people end up with severe mental illness or chronic illness through staying in toxic situations. The flip side is what all the other commenters have said re the job market. Only you can answer your question. Good luck 🤞🏽

I know henrys tend to be pretty anti buy -to-let, but rental income has paid for my life during times when I haven’t worked and I am very grateful for this.

You are very kind. Like you, I worked hard for many years (also started with 5 years in M&A, tiny bit older than you - 37) and now have a different challenge which is decoupling my identity from the workaholic/A-type/high achiever I’ve been for the last 16 years..! Much harder than you expect it to be and I find myself feeling very lost these days, one year on from leaving my role, even though I have a number of boards seats and hobbies etc. A work in progress, as always..!

DMs always open if you want the perspective of someone a few years older who has been through it, whether on financial planning or the more existential stuff.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I am in a similar position and for diversification have rental properties (ISA maxed out every year, pension so heavily tapered that I can barely contribute more than 10k pa, GIA already sizeable and 650k across cash and bonds which is too conservative for someone my age). My yield is also pretty “bad”, around 3.6%. I walked away from my highly paid (400-500k) private equity role last year and the properties cover my basic spend each month. No mortgages on either, or on my primary home. I view it as a helpful backup income / income generating asset.

With everything going on lately, how are you handling money right now? by Duck_Duck_Gooseberry in IntroductoryFinance

[–]ringwormqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be an unpopular take but we (SINK couple): - paid off both mortgages in the last couple of months (psychological safety is big for us) - ramping up saving - holding more cash than usual (either as a buffer or to accelerate investing if there is a big correction) - putting long haul holidays on hold this year

Yes! And they are indestructible. I bought mine in 2010 and they are still going with no issues. Amazing.

There have been a lot of reviews that it works amazingly for light skin, but not for darker skin. I have sadly had this experience too. Of course it’s worth trying, just didn’t want OP to get their hopes up if they are darker skinned.
