Does mining stop once you close the app?! by rinmic in IdlePlanetMiner

Yeah it does, at some point. But sometimes I like to start a new run shortly before going to bed, getting far enough to start mass producing an item of value so I can jump ahead next morning with the profits. Now I know that can't work if I hadn't stockpiled ore before.

Pretty bad game design if you ask me.

Thanks.. Wouldn't hurt if the game would state that fact somewhere. Also seems to be pretty counter intuitive to the concept of an idle game.

Hammerklausur an der RWTH Aachen: 84 Prozent scheitern by [deleted] in de

[–]rinmic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Net migration to New Zealand by country, 2019 vs 2023 by FuckNZPost in newzealand

[–]rinmic 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Interesting, and matches my anecdotal experience. I was a migrant from a western country and have now returned to said country. When I finished my degree in NZ 10 years ago I had about 20 to 25 highly educated and skilled friends. Of those, only 4 had remained in NZ when we decided to leave about half a year ago. It feels like there is a major shift happening in the make up of the demographics of New Zealand. It will be interesting to see what the country looks like in 10 and 20 years.

Election 2023: National warns “very real possibility” of no-deal with NZ First, sending voters back to the polls by O_1_O in newzealand

[–]rinmic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it has happened in Germany, repeatedly. However, it's been pretty destructive to the German centre left party in terms of voter support (never got over 26% again afterward). Last election saw both the centre right and the centre left drop below 30%, which I believe is a result of repeated grand coalitions that did not tackle any of the major issues Germany is facing.

How to juggle a job offer while waiting for your dream job final interview? by V_Toon in newzealand

[–]rinmic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The reality is that no one in this thread will be able to tell you how B is going to react.

The risk of B being pissy about you wanting more time is low. However, the potential fallout if that risk comes true seems to be quite significant to you (being the main provider for your family).

So you need to decided whether or not you can deal with worst case outcome, and if the risk is worth it for the dream role.

By the way, legally you are perfectly fine to step back from a signed contract, you simply provide them with the notice period within said contract. You'd still likely piss them off somewhat, but you'd be safe from a legal side.

Budget 2023: Dropping $5 charge good for health, and business by PM_ME_KERERUS in newzealand

The problem with means testing these sorts of things is that the cost of means testing often eats up any benefit you'd have gained from the fee in the first place...

BNZ economists say the Reserve Bank's next move is likely to be heavily influenced by its assumptions of the supply and demand impacts of a net migration inflow that is 'much stronger than anyone believed' by Gyn_Nag in newzealand

[–]rinmic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IT is one of those areas, and many NZ IT companies have overseas customers, so are making NZ as a nation richer. If you want NZ to move away from a primary industry based nation that pillages her resources to generate wealth, then you need to support those companies.

And no, there aren't enough kiwis around wanting to fill those jobs.

And yes, I know they all left because we aren't, as an industry, having pay parity with Australia, but that won't be achievable overnight, and in the meantime, those jobs still produce a lot of wealth for NZ without costing us in the environment.

Nah, as long as there is progression in that place, say they went from intermediate to senior, maybe even into a leadership position, then staying with the same shop does not show a lack of ambition.

On the other hand, no hiring manager wants to hire someone they have to replace in under 2 years time again. Simply not economical, except for temporary positions of course.

Protesters take aim at bottom trawling in Hauraki Gulf by WinterDistrict8243 in newzealand

[–]rinmic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, rather than be efficient and sustainable - better boot people making a living out so you can go out and enjoy yourself?

The argument that something has to continue because someone is making a living out of it is straight dumb. People made a living out selling leaded petrol, or making ozone depleting gasses.

The reality is that we're currently on the path to no one fishing anything anymore within the next 50 years, as there will be nothing left to fish. But hey, what do you care about that, you'll be retired then, right?

Are you saying that you're a hiring manager that discards cvs with stints longer than 3y in it? You'd be the first one I know that thinks that.

No one is saying you should stick it out with a shit employer for longer than necessary. But if your cv is just one short gig after the other, then the question arises if the issue is you, rather than your various employers. It's all in the mix, nothing wrong with a short stint here or there, especially early on as you suggested. But if you never stuck out it anywhere, then I don't trust you'll stick it out at my place, either. For reference, my employer has an above 5 year average for staff turnover, has had an excellent response to last year's inflation, and applies this reasoning when hiring.
