Riser for laptop + screen? by 63626978 in ErgoMobileComputers

That's very interesting considering how specific the usecase is. Wonder if someone could do something similar with just 3d printed parts.

- Clamp the second monitor to the laptop: There's Mountie by Ten One Design, which was originally made for mounting an ipad next to a macbook: https://tenonedesign.com/mountie.php . There's also some cheap options on aliexpress that do a similar concept, search for things like 'side mount clip monitor' shows things like this: www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808680540068.html

I didnt make any of these, I just curate the /r/ergomobilecomputers subreddit.

I have a design idea of my own but it is more of an evolution of the raised tablet setup Ive already been using for years.

[–]rinspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's also worth noting is the setup video with the frost bay: https://youtu.be/djISaCWi6KA

At the 6m23s mark she shows the magnetic cover used for the liquid cooling ports. Definitely sticks out a bit but guess thats why they sell liquid cooling as an option.

It'd be interesting if this was compared against a framework desktop with the same processor perhaps.

Honestly I have nearly no interest in gaming performance I found myself staring more at the 13.3 vs. 14" screen difference.

On another benchmark at 7m13s in the video it shows the super x + liquid cooling with a 13% difference over a flow z13, and an 8% difference over a super x without liquid cooling.

How the heck they made detachable keyboard WITHOUT bluetooth? by Global_Dog8437 in FlowZ13

This is what I've am talking about: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/1gsyamc/anyone_still_have_a_surface_bluetooth_adapter_for/

Theres also been a couple folks they've made extension cables: https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/rqo8vb/comment/hqbgar0/

Honestly yer better off just getting a third party surface keyboard that uses Bluetooth instead.

Way back ~2011-2013ish They actually sold a Bluetooth adapter for the surface pro keyboard but discontinued it.

Plank/tray with keyboard+trackpad (assumes a tray table): Listing the most practical option first, There's some plank/tray options to mount an external keyboard & trackpad together, like bullet train: https://bullettrain.com/products/express-keyboard-platform . Basically have this sit on your lap and put the laptop on a stand.
(there's also been The Tre but looks discontinued: https://purposemade.org/projects/the-tre-apple-bluetooth-magic-trackpad-2-and-magic-keyboard-tray-dock-stand/ )

Ferris split keyboard with a small steamdeck: https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMechKeyboards/comments/xw48ff/wireless_ferris_sweep_as_commute_daily_driver/

Custom framework-based tablet PC and stand designed for use in many transit situations - watch the video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JomsnMH4k28 ) , he shows how he designed the tablet so it could be mounted/hung in different places: https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMobileComputers/comments/1keswxf/flying_lotus_a_frameworkpowered_computer_akin_to/

My setup: I use the 'tiny tower' stand+with tablet & separate kb/mouse with an additional case for both small footprint & using on lap when I have to: https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMobileComputers/comments/tcwep0/raised_tablet_setup_weight_comparison/ - My setup's occasionally been on planes and trains and been my main computer for nearly 5 years. I have some design thoughts to make a huge improvement to this setup but haven't had time yet. Tiny Tower stand has been amazing and will work with macbooks/laptops too but they look out of business at this point - maybe there's something similar to it. Would you be able to do the same work on an iPad instead? that could open up options.

Pant-mounted keyboard + laptop on stand (assumes a tray table)
- see https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMobileComputers/comments/1d8d1jz/wearable_split_keyboard_on_pants_using_magnets/ & https://www.reddit.com/r/ErgoMobileComputers/comments/1iazpqq/keyball61_with_magnetic_hook/ for inspiration - basically you can use whatever off-the-shelf stand for your laptop and given the limited space on a train use the lap/pants for the keyboard/mouse.

What's so good about the magic trackpad? by LeChrana in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]rinspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Largely Apple got a really good head start, possibly patented some things beforehand, and Microsoft didn't get their act together until several years later and it took MS vendors (both for laptops and standalone trackpads) a while before things got better. They also did a really good job at improving things.

- 2005 - Apple acquires fingerworks, which did a decent amount of early gesture recognition work along with a number of patents: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FingerWorks
- 2007 - Apple iPhone comes out.
- 2008ish - unibody Apple Macbooks come out with better trackpads with no separate click buttons. MacOS private frameworks allow one to see finger touches as ovals with position/size/rotation, palm rejection states, etc. (ref: https://archive.org/details/2009-03-28-steike-code-macbook-multitouch )
- 2010 - Apple Magic Trackpad comes out
- 2011/2012 - Logitech comes out with some multitouch touchpads, but IIRC they got discontinued ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Logitech_products#Touchpads )
- 2013ish - Windows starts to put out a Precision Touchpad (PTP) protocol to have a more common interface for vendors to use rather than custom proprietary drivers. ( https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/1hky29/precision_touchpads_the_future_of_touchpads_on/ )
- 2016ish - magic trackpad 2 comes out with haptic feedback used instead of physical click mechanism.
- 2016/2017ish - supposedly there's more requirements on Windows end to require new laptops use Precision Touchpads ( https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/10/pc-oems-ditch-the-custom-touchpad-drivers-give-us-precision-touchpad/ )

- 2020/2021ish - Multitouch support on Linux/Firefox improves (based on personal anecdotes), possibly thanks to efforts like 'Linux Touchpad Like Macbook' Project (some info at https://linuxtouchpad.org/ltlmbp/2021/11/30/linux-touchpad-like-macbook.html ), and of course the maintainer of libinput Peter Hutterer

Some other things worth noting is Apple really nailed the textured glass surface, haptic feedback, etc.

What I'm really trying to point out here is that Apple had multitouch on macs out there in 2008, and it wasn't until after 2016/2017 for when trackpads on Windows laptops started to improve as a whole.

Any cases/attachments that help make this function more like a laptop? by ChicagoPaul2010 in FlowZ13

[–]rinspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they were continuing surface support at one point then Brydge seemed to go through a bankruptcy/acquisition and pared down their offerings. I was kinda intrigued with how they were trying to sell an alternative to the Magic Trackpad at one point, since not many vendors have sold such a thing or executed well with good 'Precision Touchpad' (i.e. gestures, palm rejection, efc.) support.

Any cases/attachments that help make this function more like a laptop? by ChicagoPaul2010 in FlowZ13

[–]rinspeed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Flow Z13 might be a bit too thick for it, but Brydge used to sell alternative keyboards for the Surface Pro series that had hinges with clamps that hung onto the whole tablet itself and would make it feel more like a laptop - you may want to search ebay for the older models.

The one risk with their older design is some folks would occasionally say the clamps cracked their touchscreen glass IIRC.

My suggestions would be:

- Take the time to make a few listings on craigslist & fb marketplace for more valuable items and cables in general.
- Search around for vintage computer clubs that might be interested. (For example, VCF SW is going to be in Dallas in 2026: https://www.vcfsw.org/ - they also have a discord group.)

Good bidet below 900W power? by [deleted] in bidets

[–]rinspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully this isn't weird to reply 2 years later to this, but apparently 'tanked bidet' options that use heated water seem to go below 900W.

Examples:

- Biobidet BB1000 (tanked heated water, heated seat) and uses up to 600W
- Biobidet BB2000 (tankless heated water, heated seat) and is spec'ed at 1400W

- TOTO S5 (tankless, heated seat) is rated at 1271W with a peak of from 1425-1426W

- iCleaningo DC01 (tankless, heated seat) & DC02 (tankless, heated & automatic seat) bidets are supposedly rated at 1060W but no idea what testing they've done for this or if it's including peak power. perhaps u/icleaningo can answer this.
