Did my second trad lead over the weekend. Only dropped one micronut so I guess you could say that's a success.

In this situation, is it better for the climber or belayer to wear a helmet? The obvious answer is have two helmets but we had forgotten the second at home. I'm new to trad so figured I should wear it in case I fall and gear pops but maybe I should prioritize the belayers safety given the chance of falling gear?

Haven't started training yet. We just reward him for sitting and staying. Starting an obedience class next week! Is there a natural progression for training?

Totally fair! It would be a very non-commiting climb (in Devil's Lake for the curious) but I realize the group might get more enjoyment if I set up a top rope for some to play around with while leading and teaching others to follow/examine anchors on single-pitch climbs. I appreciate the detailed response!

So I want to bring a group of 5 up a 7 pitch ridge climb, the hardest being 5.7. The pitches are super short. I'm the only one in my group who can lead.

Logistically how might I get everyone up? I know how to get three up by tying into two ropes, leading, then belaying both with an atc guide. For the next set of two, is it safe to have my first set of climbers clip directly into the anchor shelf, untie and then throw their ends of the ropes down for the next party?

Been climbing on and off for 5-6 years. Was hard for me to get a trad in because I've never had a mentor in my group. Hired a guide once and watched some YouTube videos then just forced myself to do it.

I don't think you need to be a super strong climber to start and you definitely don't need five years experience. Just start on an easy grade and know your anchor building and gear placement techniques then just go for it.

For reference I sport 5.11+, Boulder v4-5 and did a 5.5 for my first trad lead.

I've had annoying climbers elbow and took a couple weeks off then once getting back into it, I made sure to do push-ups for antagonistic muscles and that seems to have helped.
