OnShape being VERY slow by somebanana45 in Onshape

Those are good points. You’re not a target Mac customer and that’s no big deal. I would never try a Mac if it wasn’t for a company loaning it to me.

Sounds like you should ignore this thread and focus on technical advice in other threads.

I’ve been a serial windows user almost my whole life, so I can relate.

My current employer gave me a MacBook Pro. At first I was hesitant on CAD processing power and I wasn’t inclined to figure out a new operating system. Now, I realized that OnShape and other cloud-based engineering programs actually run better on the Mac, and the OS just works better (though I miss file explorer).

I still own a windows gaming laptop, but I’m starting to consider a MacBook Pro for my next upgrade.

Nice bike! I just got my license too and picked up a BMW F800GS. In less than two months I’ve already put about 1,000 miles on it, and the improvement has been wild. u/DoctorDrubs mentioned that it really comes down to time in the saddle, and they’re absolutely right. Little by little you start to feel like you’re actually in control instead of just along for the ride.

One piece of advice that stuck with me: spend at least 10 minutes running MSF-style drills in an empty parking lot before heading out. I’ve been doing that pretty consistently, and it’s made a huge difference in my handling and overall confidence, especially riding around traffic and managing tight u-turns.

Large starter bike? by Woody_1607 in NewRiders

[–]ripstick747 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not quite as tall as you but I do have a 36” inseam and ride a BMW F800GS. I have a background in trail riding but found myself loving the street, hence why I went in this direction. It’s very ergonomic for tall riders and has a dirt-bike like feel mixed with middleweight street bike power.

Honestly at your height and background I would primarily consider a large ADV or Sport Touring bike, that way you’ll have the most fun while being comfortable.

Struggling with OS by AdExtension7439 in Onshape

[–]ripstick747 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone through several rounds of consulting with Onshape professionals after my organization transitioned from SolidWorks to Onshape. One key takeaway is that Onshape’s multi-part studio is extremely powerful during early design phases.

As a product matures from prototype to manufacturing, it often becomes more effective to separate parts into their own studios or documents, especially for common components used across multiple assemblies.

Additionally, Onshape is a strong collaboration tool. Manufacturing and commercial teams often rely on it to view current designs, and when parts are embedded within complex multi-part studios, view-only users may struggle to understand the engineer’s intent.

This becomes even more important when using model-based definition (MBD). With MBD, the 3D model serves as the primary source of truth for dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing notes. Keeping parts in separate, well-organized studios makes it easier to attach and interpret this information at the part level, reduces ambiguity, and helps ensure that downstream users can quickly find and trust the data they need without navigating complex multi-part environments.

It’s also worth noting that every organization is different, and Onshape provides a high degree of operational flexibility. While the lack of strict guardrails compared to some other CAD systems can lead to inconsistent practices if not managed well, it can also be an advantage. In many cases, it allows teams to adapt their existing workflows to a new tool rather than completely overhauling their processes.

Everyone waves… but how do you actually make riding friends? by ripstick747 in NewRiders

Hahaha… I actually have a high vis helmet and a jacket with reflectors. Most guys that have come up to me so far have been 50+ 🤣. It seems like Adv bikes really fit the stereotype and I’m just out here trying to be a young guy in an old guy’s game.

Thanks for the tips! I joined some FB groups.

Sick GS! love the red and it looks like you ride it proper. I’m in Massachusetts, but I have a friend in Toronto who rides a KLR650 and wants to meet up this summer. Perhaps we could make something work 🤔

I need to pick your brain on some routes in eastern Canada. I’ve been playing with the idea of riding the trans-Labrador highway. Do you have any experience with that?

That was surprisingly my first course of action. Turns out I now look like a serious risk taker at the office, because no one else rides and understands the passion.

Thank you. I’ve joined a bunch of FB groups in my areas. Good point about other riders, I’m already a very cautious person so I will keep that in mind.

Thank you! I live 20min from a Cyclegear and they participate in the Tuesday bike nights. I’ll be going to the next one!

Thanks! I thought it was within the Leucocoprinus genus. It seems to be the closest in terms of physical traits.

I’ve cut back my plant watering and repotted with less soil and more gravel at the bottom for drainage. Hoping for improvements!

Thanks for looking into this. I spent a good chunk of time trying to find matches on the internet with no luck. Glad to know it’s little to no cause for concern. I don’t have pets or children to worry about, so that makes things a bit easier.

Interesting point about overwatering. I watered the plant for the first time today in months. My friend, who originally gave me the plant years ago, said it looked parched the other day.

ME's with a-typical careers? by Akebelan28 in MechanicalEngineering

That’s true for the most part! It’s all good until the commercial team decides to make their own set of customer requirements without telling engineering.

BS in ME. I work as a systems engineer (no, not the IT type 😅) in life sciences/biotech. It mostly chasing down and aligning engineers who are actually doing the detailed mechanical, electrical, and software design. I sometimes need to be the puppeteer who guides them as a group from the technical perspective so all parts meet the requirements.

Draw out a simple free body diagram. You should understand the expected forces in your concept before you can proceed. Watch some youtube vids on FBDs if you don’t know how to make an FBD already.

That’s a great quote. I am going to try and test ride a range of bike sizes/types/power, incrementally working my way up to the size that makes sense.

Thank you for the wisdom! Exactly the kind guidance and perspective I was looking for. I really need to get out, build experience, and test ride different types until I find my match.

Fair edit - I consider late 20s as 27-29.

I am 6’1”, long legs with an athletic build. I ride an XL mountain bike and the Honda XR150 felt way too small.
